From a few
important
people
Q&A with the
Curator and
Executive Producer
Jean-François Bouchard
Curator, C2-MTL — President, Sid Lee
How did C2-MTL start?
There are several conferences on innovation, but none
is truly creative in its approach. We wanted to go
beyond just talking about creativity, to create
a completely immersive experience. My colleagues
and I also had a desire to create a platform
to showcase Montréal’s hotbed of talent to the world.
| Words of Support |
C2-MTL is about removing barriers that too often
exist between disciplines, industries, business
people and creative people. The key to successful
innovation is the mix of influences, the ability to
be as interested in financial statements as in a new
creative concept. That’s the whole idea behind C2:
Creativity + Commerce.
4
How did the project come to life?
It all started with a question Cirque du Soleil’s
Daniel Lamarre presented to Sid Lee: “isn’t there
an opportunity to create an event that can be both
corporate AND creative?”. After some thorough
analysis, the answer was an emphatic yes. So we
decided to embark on this collective adventure, with
the support of Tourisme Montréal to realize this great
unifying project. I should also mention that the
support of Stephen and Claudine Bronfman was key
to getting the project off the ground. Many others
have since joined as the grand coalition took shape.
Sam Hamad
Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and
Export Trade and Minister responsible for the
Capitale-Nationale region
To succeed in a highly competitive global environment,
businesses have no choice but to build their
innovative capabilities and boost their productivity.
Our government is well aware of this fundamental
business fact. This is why we have launched the
Québec Research and Innovation Strategy. In
addition to seeking environmentally sustainable
solutions, our businesses need to drive forward the
commercial creativity process by using business
practices such as open innovation. We are pleased
to support C2-MTL, a forum where participants
can share and develop their creative skills and
expertise. Québec is distinguished by the quality
of its research and its large pool of creative talent.
The C2-MTL experience will give you a chance to
discover some of our bold, avant-garde businesses.
I wish you an excellent conference in Montréal, city
of creativity!
The Honourable
Denis Lebel
Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and
Communities, and Minister of the Economic
Development Agency of Canada for the Regions
of Québec
Where do you see C2-MTL in 5 years?
Our vision for C2-MTL is to create a huge sandbox
where everyone will want to come play. Our job is
not to produce everything, but rather to organize
an extensive collaboration, allowing everyone to
express themselves and thrive. Our goal is to make
this the largest annual global event on creativity
and innovation, thereby creating a clear positioning
of Montréal’s strengths and serving as a launch pad
for our talent.
For the Government of Canada, innovation and
research are clearly fundamental to job creation
and economic growth. Present in every sector of
activity, innovation helps raise productivity and is
central to Québec’s ability to conquer new markets.
With the rapid rise of the Internet, distribution
and marketing channels have been revolutionized,
offering businesses a unique opportunity to open
up to the global market. It has therefore become
essential that we not only create and invent new
products, but, more importantly still, that we find
innovative ways to commercialize them – for our
more traditional markets, like the United States,
as well as in the rest of the world.
Benoît Berthiaume
Gérald Tremblay
Executive Producer, C2-MTL
Mayor of Montréal
What are the key issues for business people
in 2012?
Creative intelligence and innovative leadership are
major issues. The complexity of today’s world
is forcing us to rethink our corporate paradigms
and business models. To stay profitable in this
environment, you have to be agile, you have
to be ready to pivot at all times.
Collaboration is key to successful business. If creativity
is in Montréal’s DNA, so too is collaboration.
It is one of the things that sets Montréal apart.
We have a knack for breaking down barriers
between industries to foster innovation: our
fashion industry dresses virtual models, the health
industry and digital technology work together to
heal children, aerospace and video gaming are on
friendly terms. C2-MTL is tapping into this mix that
is so representative of Montréal. The city is very
proud to support this major event that brings people
together.
How does C2-MTL address these issues?
With its collaborative, conversational approach,
C2-MTL is trying to break down the barriers between
industries and forge innovative relationships
between individuals and companies. It is my hope
that C2-MTL will be an annual meeting place for
discussion and immersive experiential events
connected with these issues.
| The don’t-miss-a-thing guide to C2-MTL |
Words of Support
Who is behind C2-MTL?
I am very grateful to the people who initiated
this event, particularly our curator Jean-François
Bouchard, for his original vision, the members of
our board of directors, and my legions of advisors.
I should also mention the indispensable financial
support we have received from the government
of Canada, the government of Québec, the City of
Montréal, and our generous donors and sponsors,
as well as our experiential partners and our special
creative partner, the Cirque du Soleil and notably
Daniel Lamarre.
Can you sum up the C2-MTL approach in
a few words?
Creativity is our journey, innovation is our destination,
C2-MTL is our GPS.
The Honourable
Charles Lapointe, P.C.
President and Chief Executive Officer
Tourisme Montréal
In today’s world, globalization and instant access
to information generate extremely high expectations
when it comes to service. One must always be ahead
of the curve. In Montréal, we’ve understood this.
In fact, our city thrives with burgeoning talent that
never ceases to impress. For example, Moment
Factory, with its incredible multimedia creations
that include last year’s Super Bowl halftime show
with Madonna, and the digital sculpture found
in the lobby of La Vitrine, perfectly illustrate the
innovative spirit that drives the city and keeps it
blazing in the international spotlight.
Wrap your head around C2-MTL
—
C2-MTL is all about finding creative answers
to commercial questions. This is our driving
force, our raison d’être, our bottom line, our
tagline. This is the business we’re in, and each
unique edition puts a new theme on the table.
C2-MTL 2012 explores the creative attitude
at every step of the commercial process. Being
a conference on creativity, we take a close look
at how ideas emerge; what factors influence
the way we think; how we can shape our
individual and collective environment to make
it more conducive to new ideas.
But because we’re also a conference on commerce, we don’t stop there. Having creative
ideas is fantastic, but we must activate these
ideas and apply them in real world situations.
How can we build a corporate structure that
fosters risk-taking and novel solutions? How
can we build a flexible and adaptable business
model? How do we develop a R&D process
that creates real value? What are the benchmarks of success in this constantly changing
business environment?
Once we've come up with an idea and we've
done something great with it, is it time
for a pat on the back? No. It's time for you to
start all over again. There’s no rest for the
innovators of the world. Retain a start-up
mentality. Then come back to C2-MTL next
year and tell us your story. We’d love to hear it.

Welcome
to a three-day
conversation
C2-MTL is built on the concept of
evolving content. What speakers
bring to the table is only the first
layer of content. The C2-MTL
editorial team will analyze and
contextualize, then participants
will react and comment, people
outside the conference will also
chime in (via social media and
C2-MTL’s web TV), and we will
all collectively push the content
further. At the end of three
days, we will have developed
new insights, which will form
the basis for C2-MTL 2013.

let you know about the best
restaurants in town and, most
of all, ensure you’re part of the
conversation.

Burning Question
How will C2-MTL choose which
questions deserve an international
audience of creative business
thinkers?
Well, the Nurun web app allows
you to vote for the questions you
find most relevant by giving them
a thumbs up. The popularity
of a question will be the main
criteria, though the editorial team
will also help decide in case, for
example, the top two questions
are really similar and need to be
merged. Other than that, it’s all
up to you. Go.

The Editorial
Team: Real-time
news from the
trenches
C2-MTL’s editorial team exists to
help you get the most out of the
conference. They will comment
on talks, pool your questions for
Q&A, analyze content and, most
of all, contextualize it.
The conversation at C2-MTL
is not linear. Yes, one speaker
might have said something
enlightening, but how does it
relate to what another speaker
said on the same topic? What’s
more, we’ve found that people
don’t always use the same
words to talk about the same
thing. So we have to fi nd
common ground. To do this,
we’ve identified ten themes,
which go from multidisciplinary
thinking to flexible business
models. The editorial team
will organize information
around those themes, so that
everyone leaves C2-MTL with
clear insights and condensed
knowledge.
They will also provide in-depth
research on all the topics of
interest at the conference. So you
can sit back and relax. You’ve got
the equivalent of the world’s best
intern doing all the hard work
for you.

Québec Designers’
Showcase
Québec design is on display at
C2-MTL. The featured items
stand out in the innovation and
industrial creativity landscape:
Samare’s iconic red Mountie
stool; Félix Guyon’s label chairs
from La Firme, with their
uncompromising use of wood
livened by a playful graphic
signature; Ottopapax stools made
of cleverly folded raw cardboard
energized by powerful printed
motifs; and finally the material and
sculptural elegance of Domison’s
arachnidian Tarantula chair.

to the talent, audacity and
great games of the video games

with C2-MTL to help define our
festivities. Conductors, storytellers
and creative strategists, Circo de
Bakuza also spreads an important
message: “They will forget what
you said, what you did, but they
will never forget how you made
them feel.” And you’ll never
forget an evening presented by
these saucy and seasoned event
professionals.

Sid Lee Boot Camp
Inspi(RED) to Innovate.

think again. Eight of the brightest
creative minds from around the
world have been selected to eat,
sleep and breathe Commercial
Creativity for 240 hours straight.
They will brainstorm big ideas,
initiatives, events and technologies
for (RED), a global non-profit
dedicated to eradicating the
transmission of HIV from mothers
to their babies. Sid Lee Boot
Camp presented by Autodesk will
conceive ambitious new ways
to raise awareness and funding
for (RED)’s mission and deepen
its relationship with consumers
and partners alike. Returning
Boot Camp sponsor Autodesk
– a world leader in 3D design,
engineering and entertainment
soft ware – will again be on hand
supplying soft ware and lending
their expertise. The elite eight
comprise a multidisciplinary team:
a copywriter, art director, creative
technologist, architect, industrial
designer and graphic designers.
Throughout the experience,
the team will be coached by the
best from Sid Lee while rubbing
shoulders with industry experts.
It’s anything but basic training –
it’s a new take on collaboration
and creativity courtesy of Sid Lee.
Sid Lee Collective
Sid Lee Collective is an idea
incubator that encourages its
artisans to push the boundaries
of creativity even further, by
initiating cultural and commercial
projects in the fields of the visual
arts, industrial design, music,
technology, etc. A brainchild of
Sid Lee, the collective promotes
collaboration and experimentation.
As part of C2-MTL, Sid Lee
Collective selected 6 projects
from its various ateliers around
the world. The creations are
both diverse and inventive:
a photo documentary, a screenprinting workshop, a structure
made up of 4,900 boxes, a
series of illustrations painted
on giant wooden blocks, a loom
programmed to follow the
event’s Twitter feed and weave
a giant scarf, and a visualization
installation allowing one to play
with content from C2-MTL in
a fun, interactive way.

Built in the image of its inhabitants, Montréal
is a lively and stylish town teeming with the
kinds of creative minds that are never at rest.
And it’s not easy to sleep when you’re living in
a city that’s perpetually in motion when it to
cuisine, fashion, film, music, digital arts and,
well, you can pretty much name it. In terms of
creative and commercial innovation, Montréal
has taken its place on the world stage. And it
hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Home to an inspired array of creatively-inclined designer types – some emerging, some
well-established – Montréal was designated
a UNESCO City of Design in 2006. It’s a place
where things are always happening, and
where our creators aspire to shine in every
arena. They are forever innovating, taking
ownership of styles and technologies, shaping
trends, and informing not only the life of
the city, but the emergence of new ideas.

Bronfman Family Foundation
is all about promoting
entrepreneurship. They’ve
invited 25 Emerging

conversation at C2-MTL. Out
of 315 applications, meet the
selected few.

Things could get a little out
of control
—
Meteorites falling from the sky. Alien abductions. Maybe even a nip slip or two. There are
some things we can control. Others, not so
much. That being said, we kindly ask that you
bear with us for the occasional hiccup. This
is our first year, and C2-MTL is a monster of a
conference. But it’s a friendly monster. And
we’ve worked very hard to make it unforgettable.
So thanks in advance for your patience.
And remember, a little failure could result
in a lot of fun.
