Batch renaming in Windows XP You may want to rename name a large number of files, so how can you do that quickly and easily? Follow these three simple steps… 1.Select the files you want to rename If it’s a running sequence, select the first file then hit ‘shift’ and select the final file If it’s a mixture, select individual files by keeping ‘ctrl’ pressed as you select them 2.Rename the first file Right click with the cursor positioned over the first file and type a new name - be careful not to delete the file extension i.e. ‘.jpg’ 3.Hit enter to rename the rest of the sequence Files should now be renamed and placed in a numerical sequence. If you want to start numbering from the first file, make that part of your filename i.e. ‘trenchA01_2010 (1).JPG Mistakes can be undone by selecting ‘undo’ from the ‘edit’ menu option or clicking ‘ctrl’ and ‘z’ together This function renames all chosen files to the name given, adding a sequential number in brackets. You can’t: • change the numbering system e.g. use 01 rather than 1 • remove the spaces and brackets (which can problem if put online or used on non-windows systems) • change the case of the file extensions For greater control over how you rename you files, try tools like: • Bulk rename utility - http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/ • Renamer 4 Mac - http://renamer4mac.com/
