Everman Community Newsletter August 2016 City Hall 817‐293‐0525 www.evermantx.net City Cable Access Channel 27 (Charter) Everman Residents, The first item that I would like to discuss is the Everman Newsletter that you have been receiving in your water bills, every third month. This will be the last issue of the newsletter that you will be receiving in your water bill. In an effort to reduce cost, the City of Everman will be offering the newsletter in the following formats: (1).You will be able to go to the city website at: www.evermantx.net and look under the “Newsletter” tab, and pull up the newsletter. (2). or you can come by Everman City Hall and pick up a “Newsletter” in the display behind the water fountains. The EISD will no longer participate in the “Everman Newsletter”. They have decided to go electronic on their information. There are benefits to making this change. Instead of the newsletter being done every three months, we will be able to update the newsletter or parts of the newsletter, as needed. This will keep our citizens better informed about our city. In the past, we would have to try and cover what has happened over the past three months, and what was going to happen for the next three months. We will also not be limited to the amount of information that is in our newsletter, since we will not have to worry about going over on the budgeted dollar amount for newsletters. This newsletter will also be posted on the website, in order for our citizens to check it out. If you have any questions, please contact city hall. Things have been hopping in our fair city, since the last newsletter. We have been experiencing something that we have not seen in many, many years. It is called commercial growth. We have had four new businesses open over the past two months. “La Media Naranja” restaurant opened on May 13, and is located at the Everman Shopping Center at 1809 Everman Parkway. “Real Deal Pawn and Jewelry” opened on May 23, and is located at 700 Wichita Street. “Blessa Beauty Salon” opened for business on June 13, and is located at 1837 Everman Parkway, Ste 1813. This is also at the Everman Shopping Center. Finally yet importantly, is “KC’s Paint Shop & Restoration” that opened on June 18th, and is located at 604 Shelby Road. If you have driven by the Everman Shopping Center located on Everman Parkway, you will also notice the new addition that is being erected at the East end of the complex. This will be a new 14,000 SF grocery store that will be owned and operated by Eddie Malik. Mr. Malik is the owner of the Everman Shopping Center. We are looking forward to the opening of this business that should happen by year’s end. We currently have five more projects in the works that will be opening in the near future. Please “Shop Everman”. In June 2016, the City of Everman purchased the building located at 115 West Trammell. This is the old Wheeler house. Tom Wheeler lived there until his death. Tom inherited the house from his mother Ruth Wheeler and was running a leather shop at that location. Prior to that, this location use to be the old “Everman Bank”, I believe back in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The house still has the old vault in it from the bank days. It was being used as a closet by the Wheeler family. The City of Everman is planning on bringing the look of the old bank back to the building, and making it a museum. It will also be the future home of the Everman Historical Society. The Everman Historical Society is selling pavers to be laid at the new location. If you would like to buy a paver or pavers, you can pick up a form at Everman City Hall. The money will be used for future projects for the group. If any of our long time residents have items of historical significance and would like to donate or loan these items to the museum for display, please contact the Historical Society or me (Mayor Ray Richardson) at City Hall and we will make arrangements. The last item that I have is the passing of Willard E.”Wilt” Brown, Jr. Wilt was the Mayor of Everman back in the 1970’s and ran the “Wilt’s Tote a Bag” located on Wichita Street just south of Pittman Park. As a child at the time, I have many fond memories of Wilt Brown and the visits to his convenience store. Wilt passed away on April 27, 2016. Per Wilt’s request, no funeral was held. On Saturday, July 16, 2016, a Memorial Service was held in Comanche, Oklahoma by the Brown family. Please Community Newsletter, August, 2016 keep the Brown family in your prayers. Wilt will be greatly missed. at City Hall, 212 N Race Street, phone number 817293-0525. Sincerely, NSF CHECK POLICY Lastly, this crazy weather has delayed our street projects for this year. I visited with the County work crew leader and baring no more rain of emergencies, they hope to get back to Everman’s needs by October. This dilemma has also put Fort Worth on hold until the end of the year before they can complete their section of West Enon. City Manager City Manager All NSF checks will be charged a service charge, the price to be adjusted periodically to reflect banks charge. All NSF checks are to be paid for with cash or money order, no checks will be accepted for a payment of an NSF. Once the City gets the NSF check back, it will not be re-sent to the bank. The bank presents the check two (2) times before returning it to the City. If a customer gives the City an NSF check two (2) times in a one (1) year period, then that customer forfeits the right to write checks for a one (1) year period, ending a year after the date of the second NSF check given. Customers that have given an NSF check will be notified of such and given three (3) working days to pay for the NSF check and the service charge. If on the Fourth (4th) working day, the NSF check has not been paid for, the water will be cut off and an additional service charge will be added to the account. Obed Rodriguez, Librarian Each year, throughout the nation, cities and towns celebrate National Night out, in different ways. While most cities celebrate in different manners, the one common goal of all celebrations is to bring the community together, to show the Criminal Element, that we will take a stand and will not let them put fear into the spirit of our communities. While many states will celebrate this event in the Month of August, most communities, in Texas hold off until the first Tuesday in October, when, hopefully, the weather will be more comfortable. While the exact itinerary is not yet completed, the main thing to remember is that it is fun and it is FREE. Food, games, music and entertainment will be the theme for the night and the event is opened to everybody in the community. POLICE, FIRE, and EMS equipment and vehicles will be on display, along with other activities, for young and not so young. Make plans now to attend the event and let’s show the bad guys that we WILL TAKE A STAND. NOT TO EARLY Although we are still a few weeks away from school starting back up, we should all start NOW becoming familiar with posted school zones, one way streets surrounding our school campuses, and the hours that school zones are in effect. The safety of our children begins with US and the way we operate motor vehicles around our campuses can make the difference between them arriving safely or not arriving at all. We must remember that the use of cell phones or texting devices in and around school zones is prohibited, by law. We should teach our children, grand children, and others about the importance of paying attention to their surroundings and make sure to report any suspicious persons to parents, teachers or police. It is never too early to start teaching safety to our children. Community Newsletter, August, 2016 The temperature is getting higher and pets can become dehydrated and overheat very quickly if they do not have access to clean water at all times. necessary to manage local groundwater resources. The City Council will discuss this topic at the next City Council Meeting to be held on August 9, 2016. Animal Control Officer We are currently on a watering restriction for conservation measures. NOTES FROM PUBLIC WORKS Everyone should know by now that there have been cases of the Zika virus found in the United States, This virus is spread through mosquito bites. A person can get infected through a bite from an infected mosquito and a mosquito can become infected by biting an infected person. The virus can also be spread through human bodily fluids. The Zika virus usually stays in a person’s blood for a few days to a week after getting infected, but it stays in a man’s semen for two to ten weeks after getting infected. He can in turn infect his partner through sex. A pregnant woman can pass the virus to her unborn child. It causes a birth defect called microcephaly, a disease in which the baby’s head and brain are unusually small. There is no known vaccine for Zika. The best vaccine is prevention. You can do this by emptying any open water containers in and around your house, keep grasses and bushes trimmed, use mosquito repellent containing DEET, wear long sleeves, gloves , hat, shoe and socks when performing yard work, stay in places that have air conditioning or screens on windows and doors. You may even consider putting mosquito screen around you r baby’s crib and stroller. We did not have very cold winter this year and we‘ve had a lot of rain. This means we will have many mosquitoes. It is possible some of those mosquitoes are carrying viruses. Do all you can to protect yourself and your loved ones from mosquito bites so you can enjoy a healthy summer. Director of Public Works Jeff Reed Greetings all, I would like to thank the citizens of Everman for doing their part in keeping our city clean, I am proud to be involved in the planning phase of the future of The City of Everman. We are currently looking into going to an automated meter reading system which will eliminate the problems associated with human error. This will not happen immediately but hope to have the project completed by this time next year. The City will be requesting a water rate increase of 12.5 cents per thousand gallons to cover the fees assessed by the Northern Trinity Ground Water Conservation District. The District may not asses taxes, but instead is funded by a groundwater production fee to generate the revenue We all must do our part to keep Everman clean and safe. Tacos Oasis broke ground (after the rain stopped) and the foundations for the restaurant building and the large outdoor patio have been poured. They hope to be open for business by the end of summer.
