Bringing Legacy to L ife
2011 Annual Report
Allen Temple Arms Holds the Deed to History
A Message
from the President
My friend Bob Foster was an extraordinary
man. A talented financial executive, Bob made
a name for himself at Corning Glass Co. and,
later, as an economic advisor to President
Ronald Reagan. At The Terraces of Los Gatos,
where Bob and his wife, Elizabeth, lived happily
after retirement, Bob would sit for hours
with fellow residents and team members
who needed help with financial matters.
Whether he was helping the president cut the deficit or
helping a friend file her taxes, Bob’s knack for numbers
was matched by his penchant for people. He and
Elizabeth enjoyed a close relationship with many of
the community’s team members. When Elizabeth was
diagnosed with dementia, Bob watched in awe of his
wife’s gentle, patient caregivers — friends, really — who
showed him how to navigate this new reality.
Bob wanted future generations of ABHOW residents to
experience the same exceptional care he and Elizabeth
received at The Terraces, and he knew the best way
to do that was to build the capacity of the people who
care about — and for — seniors. Shortly before his own
death in 2000, Bob called his daughter, Phyllis Satter,
to his bedside.
What’s your legacy? That is a question
we at the ABHOW Foundation ask often
and will continue to explore. The answer
we seek is not a single, prevailing wisdom,
but rather an ever-expanding truth.
Legacy is not what we leave behind.
Legacy is what we bring to life.
Joe Anderson
President
I have an idea, Bob told his daughter. Write this down.
Those carefully scripted notes form the basis of Bob’s
legacy, the Foster Family Education Fund. To date, the
fund has given more than 200 ABHOW team members
the opportunity to access job training, improve basic
skills and complete coursework toward a degree in
gerontology or a related field of study. It’s incredibly
inspiring to know that, for every educational grant
made, an ABHOW team member will touch hundreds,
possibly thousands, of lives over the course of their
career. Just as Bob Foster intended.

A Message
from the Chairman
and the CEO
In August 1981, 45 people marched
from Oakland's Allen Temple Baptist
Church to the newly opened Allen Temple
Arms. There, they celebrated the fulfillment
of the church’s dream: A community that
seniors with limited incomes could be proud
to call home.
Allen Temple Arms is indeed thriving today, some 30
years after the first residents moved in. Keeping the
dream alive is the mission of the ABHOW Foundation
Board of Directors. Through the generosity of our
donors, the Foundation has invested $100,000 in
“The Arms” over the years for community improvements and life-enhancing amenities. The Board’s
governance structure helps ensure a return on that
and all Foundation investments for the good of every
ABHOW resident.
Since its inception in 1968, the ABHOW Foundation has
nurtured communities by providing financial support
to residents who require assistance. But our commitment to charitable ministry leads us to enrich the lives
of those who give as well as those who receive. As such,
our work and mission depend on the strength of our
investments. Growth is essential. The Board facilitates
the Foundation’s growth and ensures its future by
building the capacity of local foundation committees.
Three ABHOW communities will break ground in 2012
on projects to expand or improve their campuses, thanks
in large part to resident fundraising efforts through
local foundation committees. The second annual
casino night at The Terraces of Phoenix brought the
community well within reach of the $1 million needed
for a major expansion of the resident activity center.
At The Terraces of Los Gatos, a $500,000
capital campaign is under way in support
of a planned 23,000-square-foot community addition. And at The Terraces at Los
Altos, residents and team members are
working together to host themed giving
events to raise money for a multiphase
campus redevelopment.
ABHOW’s future is bright and getting
brighter. And we should know. As members of the ABHOW Foundation Board
of Directors, ours is the best seat in the
house. We see buildings go up and walls
come down. Neighbors who become
friends. Friends who come together and
shape their communities and dream
a dream that brings legacy to life.

Bringing Legacy to Life
Nelson Rodrigues had plenty of drive and ambition when he went to work at The Terraces
of Los Gatos. What he didn’t have was enough money to further his education, a necessary
step if he was to realize his goal of working more closely with seniors at the Los Gatos,
Calif., continuing care retirement community.
The amount Rodrigues needed wasn’t all that
much, yet to a young man with a wife and family
to support, it seemed like a small fortune. To the
man who gave flight to Rodrigues’ dream without
ever meeting him, it was but a small price to pay.
To date, more than 200 ABHOW team members
have used the Foster Family Education Fund
to access job training, improve basic skills and
complete coursework toward a degree in gerontology or a related field of study.
Friends say Robert Foster would have gotten a lot
of satisfaction from seeing Nelson Rodrigues and
his fellow team members Tyler Ichien and Kristi
McKinney pursue their nursing home administrator
licenses and receive subsequent promotions — all
thanks to the educational fund Foster established
shortly before his death in 2000.
“My plan is to keep moving along in my career, to
keep going,” says Rodrigues. “The Foster Family
Education Fund has been an enormous help to
me and to so many people here at The Terraces.
It’s incredible, really.”

Foster laid the groundwork upon which hundreds,
perhaps thousands, of others will build their
own legacies.
at Judson Park in Des Moines, Wash., and a
mosaic garden at Valle Verde in Santa Barbara.
Henry Mandle’s plan was a bit more simple: live
each day to the fullest and savor every moment.
His friends at The Terraces at Los Altos said of
all the ways his children could have honored his
memory, establishing the Henry’s Treat Fund
after his death in 1989 was nothing short of perfect.
The success of the annual ABHOW Foundation
Golf Classic provides a better way of life for
ABHOW’s affordable housing residents. Thanks
to the Affordable Housing Assistance Grant Fund,
residents at Judson Terrace enjoyed amenities such
as garden benches, a newly refurbished community room and health outreach services. The
Foundation managed $1.7 million in special
project funds in 2011.
Residents of the Los Altos, Calif., community
have enjoyed the simple pleasure of a scoop of
ice cream every Thursday night for 22 years,
compliments of Henry Mandle.
The 20 memorial funds managed by the ABHOW
Foundation are as unique as the people who
inspired them. People like Lucille Ice, whose love
of music fills the air at ABHOW communities, and
Paul Jepson, whose profound connection to seniors
affected by memory loss soothes the souls of
residents at The Grove. All together, the memorial funds represented a $2.1 million investment
portfolio in 2011.
The Foundation also manages 58 special project
funds, primarily on behalf of ABHOW’s CCRC
and affordable housing communities. At the
CCRCs, resident-led fundraising efforts ripened
these funds and bore fruit for a number of
special projects, including a new 23-seat bus

Dr. Richard Ice says the Lucille Ice Musical Fund was the
perfect way to memorialize his late wife. Robert Foster’s
gift has supported the training and education of more
than 200 ABHOW team members. The memorial fund
established in Paul Jepson’s name will help provide care
and services for residents affected by memory loss.
Jepson, ABHOW’s assistant vice president of care
services, passed away in May 2011.

The Impact of the Foundation:
CCRC Endowments
“You’ll never be asked to leave should you run short of funds through no fault of your own”
is a promise ABHOW makes to every continuing care contract resident. It is a promise
made through the benevolent support of the ABHOW Foundation. It is a promise kept
by the generosity of residents through the community endowments they invest in and
champion at all 11 ABHOW CCRCs.
In 2011 the Foundation distributed more than
$1.1 million to the CCRCs for benevolent care.
This was the 15th consecutive year that the
Foundation provided more than $1 million in
direct benevolent care payments to the ABHOW
communities. In a year of continued economic
challenges, ABHOW residents drew strength
from the assurance provided by the endowments

and resolved to keep the promise of benevolent
support unbroken for their neighbors today
and for a new generation of seniors to come.
Bringing legacy to life — and keeping it alive — was
made possible in 2011 by the commitment and
generosity of donors.

Local Committees
The ABHOW Foundation relies upon local foundation
committees to help raise money for community
endowments and campus improvement projects.
Local committees provide a bridge between the
Foundation and CCRC residents.
Committee members share information about
the Foundation’s programs and help to identify
and cultivate prospective donors. Because of the
committees’ efforts, more than $1.25 million was
added to the community endowments in 2011.
More than simply raising money, resident-led
committees inspire a passion for philanthropy
at the local level. Their work brings the mission
of the ABHOW Foundation home. Their passion
for giving brings legacy to life.
Residents, board members, and ABHOW team
members served on the following local committees

The Impact of the Foundation:
Affordable Housing
Samuel Estrada is not a wealthy man, but he considers himself one of good fortune since
moving to Valley Vista, ABHOW’s newest affordable housing community. On the day of
the San Ramon, Calif., community’s grand opening ceremony, Estrada shared a story that
has become all too familiar among seniors in the U.S. today. Faced with losing the home
he and wife Maria Rosalinda shared with a family member, Estrada was running out of
time and options. Valley Vista, he says, was the answer to his prayers.
“All these people [at ABHOW] were used by the
almighty Father to facilitate things for people
like us, people who could not survive without
the provisions provided by those who are doing
good things,” says Estrada.
8 | 2011 ABHOW Foundation Annual Report
The ABHOW Foundation’s enthusiastic support
of affordable housing is steeped in the belief that
the limitations of income should never dictate
the comforts of home. For the Estradas and their
new neighbors, that means stylish décor, vibrant
artwork and a wheelchair-accessible van were

there to greet them on the day of the community’s
grand opening. These amenities, made possible
by ABHOW Foundation grants, pay for the things
that make a house a home — enhancements not
typically covered by state and federal housing funds.
In 2011 the Foundation awarded a total of $77,000
in grants to ABHOW affordable housing communities for such items as the installation of security
cameras at Allen Temple Arms I & II in Oakland,
Calif.; a redecorated community room at Three
Rivers Village in Richland, Wash.; and new
computers at Tahoe Senior Plaza in South Lake
Tahoe, Calif.
These and other grants bring the total amount
awarded from the Foundation’s Affordable
Housing Assistance Grant Fund to more than
$827,000 over 15 years. The grants are made
possible by the annual ABHOW Foundation Golf
Classic. More than $1.1 million has been raised
by the tournament since its inception in 1996.
The 2011 event, held on Oct. 10 at Round Hill
Country Club in Alamo, Calif., took in more
than $100,000 from sponsorships, auctions
and tournament fees.
As ABHOW’s affordable housing portfolio continues
to grow, along with the demand for affordable
senior housing, the Foundation remains committed to providing quality-of-life amenities
that help set ABHOW communities apart.
“People come up to me all the time and say, ‘I
can’t believe this is affordable housing,’” says
Ancel Romero, ABHOW’s senior vice president
for affordable housing. “That’s one of the best
compliments we could ever get. What we’re
working toward is the day when people don’t
have preconceived notions of affordable housing.
Until then, ABHOW and the Foundation will
continue to set a new standard, because our
residents deserve nothing but the very best.”
