To round any number, follow these rules:




Underline the place value you are rounding to.
Circle the digit to the right of the underlined digit.
If the number is : 0,1,2,3 or 4 the digit stays the same.
If the circled number is: 5,6,7,8 or 9 the underlined digit goes up
by 1.
 The circled digit and all digits to the right become 0.
Rounding examples:
Example 1: Round 138 to the nearest hundreds place
1 3 8 rounds to 1 0 0
Steps:




Underline the 1 in the hundreds place.
Circle the 3.
The right-hand man is 3 – say “4 or below just stay low.”
So…1 stays the same and 3 becomes 0, and 8 becomes 0.
Example 2: Round 267 to the nearest hundreds place.
2 6 7 rounds to 3 0 0
Steps:




Underline the 2 in the hundreds place.
Circle the 6.
The right-hand man is 7 – say “5 or above give it a shove.”
So…2 goes up to 3 and 6 becomes 0, and 7 becomes 0.
