Introducing Spanish Alphabet Arch The early study of letter recognition should be interesting, active learning. Spanish Alphabet Arch provides a fun setting for students to engage with and manipulate the letters of the alphabet, recognizing distinctive letter features as they name and match those letters to the corresponding letters on the Alphabet Arch Mat. Two doublesided mats allow for individual play or partner practice for four students. Two types of letter identification allow for skill-level differentiation for emergent readers. One side of the mat involves basic matching of upper- and lowercase letters, while the back of the mat has letters missing and offers an exciting challenge in alphabetic sequencing. Model the Letter Identification Activity Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students. Start with one Spanish Alphabet Arch Mat for To practice upper- to lowercase matching skills, use the uppercase side of the mat with the lowercase letters or vice versa. Model Alphabet Sequencing To practice letter sequencing, turn over the mat and show students the partial arch. Lay out the foam letters so students can see and reach them. Explain to students that they will use their alphabet knowledge to fill in the missing letters. Start by pointing to “A” on the mat. Ask students what letter comes next. Once students have named the letter, have them find and place it after the “A.” Continue until the alphabet arch is complete. Once students are comfortable with the format of the activity, challenge them to complete the arch out of order. Have students take turns closing their eyes and selecting Foam Letters. They name the letters and then place them in their correct spots on the mat using the letters that are already there as reference.
