Ben's Loose Tooth
by Donna Latham
"I’m always last," Ben sighed. "Last to learn to whistle. Last to lose a tooth."
Ben's older sister, Kate, was always bossy. "Jiggle your teeth,"
she said. "Find one that’s wiggly and wobbly."
Tooth by tooth, Ben jiggled. He wriggled the last tooth. "It’s
wiggly. It’s wobbly!"
"Tug it," Kate said.
"Uh!” Ben mumbled. “It’s stuck in my gums."
"Hmmm.” Kate scrunched her nose. "Munch that apple."
Ben took a bite. “Ouch! No luck.”
"Hmmm," said Kate. She tapped her pinky against her chin. "I’ll scare it out of you! That's
how you get rid of hiccups. Maybe it works for teeth too."
Ben squeezed his eyes shut. He held his breath. He waited and waited. "Hey! When are
you going to scare me?" He propped one eye open.
"How scary would it be if I told you?" Kate asked.
"Well—,” Ben said.
"Boo!" cried Kate. She flapped her arms.
Ben's fingers flew to the tooth. He wriggled it. He jiggled it. “Blah! I’ll never lose a tooth."
He hung his head. "I’ll never learn to whistle, either."
"Whistle? I can teach you!” Kate said. “Pucker your lips. Leave a tiny space."
Ben scrunched his lips together.
“Perfect.” Kate smiled. “Now, shoot the air out. Hard.”
With all his might, Ben blasted air. Out burst a high note—with his tooth!

Jimmy's Treasure
One night Jimmy fell asleep
and had a dream about a
treasure. In his dream, he saw a
big box of gold coins buried
near the bushes in his backyard.
The dream seemed so real to
Jimmy. He began to think that

the bushes.
The next morning Jimmy woke up and began to
dig a hole. He kept digging. The hole got deeper. The
pile of dirt became higher.
Then Jimmy got tired. He could not dig anymore.
Then he saw something. It was a dog bone. Jimmy was
very sad because he did not find a treasure. For all his
hard work, he had found only a dog bone.
But then, Jimmy’s mother came. She saw what
Jimmy had done. She wanted to plant a rose bush in
the backyard. The hole Jimmy dug was in the perfect
place. She was very happy. She gave him five dollars
for digging the hole. Jimmy smiled. He did get a
treasure after all.

Venus Flytrap
by Lill Pluta
It's not my fault I ate that fly.
I’m just a rhizome sprouting up in the spongy Carolina bog.
Not enough nitrogen to keep a long, tall, green thing like me growing...
so, I turned to a life of trickery.
My hinged traps grow in pairs,
green as clover outside, tragic vermilion inside.
Lured by nectar, the six-leggers light,
triggering one.. two.. hairs and...
SNAP!
Poor little bugs.
They thought I’d be their snack
but now they are
mine.
Venus Flytraps
by Lill Pluta
We think of meat-eating plants as something rare and exotic, growing in far away jungles.
However, the Venus Flytrap is native to the bogs of North and South Carolina in the United
States. Collectors have endangered the plants. Now, the plants are grown in greenhouses.
You can even order flytrap bulbs or rhizomes over the Internet. This carnivorous plant from the
Carolinas has become a hot topic for science fair projects.
Venus Flytraps do not get enough nutrients from their native soil. You can think of the insects
they eat as vitamin supplements. A Venus Flytrap’s leaves are shaped like clam shells. Insects
are attracted by the bright red color, but tiny sensitive hairs inside the leaf lay a trap. When
an unfortunate insect bends these hairs, the leaf snaps shut. Then the flytrap oozes fluids that
dissolve the trapped insect, leaving the hard exoskeleton behind.

Caroline and the Castle
Caroline lived deep in the forest. In
the forest there were enchanted fairies,
ancient trees with arms, and talking
woodland animals. Everything was magical
in the forest, and Caroline was always
happy there. Caroline's family lived in a tree
house, high in the air, in this magical forest. The enchanted creatures of the forest all
became friends with Caroline.
One day Caroline went on a walk with her family, and they came across a huge,
stone castle. The castle was surrounded by trees higher than any she had ever seen!
Her mother walked to the castle gates and knocked softly. When she did, the gates
opened and revealed a beautiful rose garden. On the other side of the rose garden
she could see beautiful the painted windows and giant wooden doors to the castle.
Her mother and father led the way to the castle doors, carefully avoiding the
overgrown rose bushes. When they reached the door, it opened to reveal a royal
corridor. A beautiful queen appeared from a nearby room, and greeted them with a
bow. After talking about the forest and how they got to the castle, the queen invited
them to stay for dinner. A magnificent feast was prepared, and
Caroline was most thrilled with the selection of desserts and cakes.
She liked the chocolate truffles most.
After the royal feast, Caroline and her family bid their
farewells and began the journey home. Caroline awoke in her
bed the next day, wondering if it was all a dream.

Iguanas
by Erin Ryan
Iguanas are large lizards found in several southern states, Central and South America, the
Caribbean Islands and Africa. Some types of iguanas live in tropical rain forests, others live in deserts,
and there are some that live on rocks along the ocean. One special adaptation they have is that they
can be different colors from bright green, to dark brown to help them hide in grass, trees, in water, and
along rocks.
Iguanas lay up to fifty eggs at a time, and baby iguanas are usually bright green. Iguanas can
grow to be up to seven feet long if you measure them from their nose all the way to the end of their
long tail. They can live for up to twenty years. They are cold-blooded reptiles, so they have to soak up
the sun’s rays during the day to stay warm when the sun sets. Iguanas are omnivores. They like to eat
leaves and fruits best, but they also eat insects and sometimes they even eat small animals. Iguanas
can run very fast, climb trees easily with their long claws and they’re great swimmers. If a big animal
catches an iguana, its tail can break off and it will grow back. (Smaller lizards, like anoles and
salamanders, can do this too.)
There are forty different types of iguanas and twelve of them are endangered. Some reasons
why they’re endangered are because their eggs are eaten by animals, their habitats are becoming
smaller because people moving into their territories, and in some countries, iguanas are hunted for
food.
Some people even keep iguanas for pets. Pet iguanas need large cages, because they can
grow very long. Many people feed their iguana’s dark green leafy vegetables, and fruit salad, a
favorite treat. Because they’re reptiles, they need special lights to keep their body temperature warm
and to make sure they stay healthy.
If you ever visit places with tropical climates, be on the lookout for iguanas. They’re one of the
largest and most interesting lizards you’ll ever see.
