Office of Service-Learning Central Asia Service-Learning Program Background To capitalize on the new opportunities created by the “Belt and Road” initiatives as well as strengthen and promote further educational exchanges between Hong Kong and the nearby countries along the “Belt and Road”, the Office of Service-Learning has launched its pilot Service-Learning program in Central Asia. The aims of this program are to provide more exposure to our Lingnan students on the development in countries along the ‘Belt and Road’ in central Asia (especially Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) while fostering the Service-Learning exchange and collaboration with these countries. After the whole program, students are invited to draft a policy paper on their roles in promoting academic exchange with the ‘Belt and Road’ countries. Basic information are as follows: Period: 30 June to 14 July 2017 (15 days) Target: 10 Service-Learning students and 4 Faculty members Countries covered: Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan Themes: Culture, History and Ecology Responsibilities 1. Overnight in Otrar hotel. - Almaty > Karakol Valley > Charyn Canyon > Karakol - Breakfast at hotel - Drive to Karakol (430 km, 6-7 hours) via a Karkara valley, see the natural landscapes on the way and visit the Charyn canyon which is also known as Valley of Castles for its unusual rock formations. The width of it ranges from 20-80 meters (66 – 262 ft). The length is 2 km (1.24 mi) long. - Day 3 2 July (Sun) Karakol Karakol City > University Visit > Djety-Oguz Valley - Breakfast at hotel - Sightseeing of Karakol, one of the first towns of the Russian Cossak settlements in late 19th century. Visit Przevalski’s (a Great Russian explorer from the late 19th century) Memorial Museum, Dungan Pagoda type of mosque and Orthodox wooden Church. - Visit Karakol State University’s Ecology and Environmental Department - Day 4 3 July (Mon) Day 5 4 July (Tue) Karakol > Issykul Lake Karakol > Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Continue driving to Karakol. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Green Yard or Similar hotel. Meeting with professors and students. After lunch, Excursion to Djety-Oguz valley Return back to Karakol for overnight in Hotel. Grigoryevka Gorge > Issykul Lake - Breakfast at hotel - Drive to Issykul Lake. Today we will make a stop in Grigoryevka Gorge to visit the Issykul Regional Forestry and Environmental Department. FAQ with department people. Hiking in the gorge. - Continue driving to Issykul Lake Karakol > UNIESCO Heritage Sites > Horse Polo Game > NGOs in Bishkek - Breakfast at hotel - Drive to Bishkek. En route visit UNESCO Heritage Sites: Ak-Beshim Buddist ruins of 6-8 centuries AD and Burana Tower of 11 century AD., one of the remaining watch towers from the silk route times. - Lunch at local family in Don-Aryk village. - Watching the famous Horse Polo Game Ulak-Tartysh - Buzkashi . - Afternoon continue driving to Bishkek. - Upon arrival in Bishkek, visiting to Nog Governmental Organizations related - with Ecological and Nature Protection. Later walking tour of Bishkek including White house building, Lenin statue, Manas the Great Monument, Ala-Too Square and Victory square. Day 6 5 July (Wed) Day 7 6 July (Thu) Bishkek > Tashkent, Uzbekistan Tashkent > Nukus > Aral Sea Dinner at local restaurant. Bishkek > City tour in Tashkent - Fly to Tashkent, Uzbekistan (06:45-07:05) City tour in Tashkent (Amir Temur Square, Independence Square, Tashkent Metro, the old city) Tashkent > Nukus > Aral Sea - Fly to Nukus (07:10-09:45) - Then drive to Aral Sea Shore through the Ustyurt Plateau, pass by Kungrad district (trading centres on the Silk Road in the past) and Lake Sudochie. - Overnight in the tent Aral Sea >Cemetery of Ships > Gas Towers > Site-seeing in Nukus Day 8 7 July (Fri) Day 9 8 July (Sat) Day 10 9 July (Sun) Day 11 10 July (Mon) Aral Sea > Nukus > Khiva Khiva Khiva > Bukhara Bukhara - - Drive to the Moynak Village (Cemetery of Ships). Will pass through canyons and the collapsed land. Drive on the dried bottom of the sea, pass by the gas towers. Drive back to Nukus. Site seeing: Mizdak-khan architectural complex Drive to Khiva from Nukus (2.5 hrs drive) City tour in Khiva - Ichan-Qala: UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palace, Mosque - Dinner with puppet show Khiva > Amu-Darya River > Bukhara - Drive to Bukhara via Kyzylkum desert (7hrs drive). Stop to see Amu-Darya River on the way.
