Due To Mrs. Williams at East & Mrs. Feliciano at JP before March 21, 2014 2014 MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Completed application packets must be submitted to the applicant’s Mrs. Pat Williams at East Main Office or Mrs. Jeanette Feliciano at JP Main Office on or before Friday, March 21, 2014. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Committee invites students who demonstrate financial need, and who plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university, nursing school, or an accredited post-secondary vocational program to apply for a scholarship grant. Grants are typically for one year and may range from $1,000 - $5,000. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors from J.P. McCaskey High School who demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, and qualities of leadership, citizenship, and service to school and community. Applicants are required to submit a completed application form (see link below) and to provide the following items with their application: (Check off each item as you place it into your folder). Applications received by the Scholarship Committee that are missing any of the required documents will not be considered. ______ 1. A 500 word essay (typed and double-spaced): Reflecting on the teachings and many accomplishments of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., explain why you should be considered for a scholarship in Dr. King’s name. _______ 2. Three Letters of Recommendation: Two from teachers, counselors, coaches, or activity advisors, and one from an adult who knows you well (clergy, employer, community leaders, close family friends) and who is not a family member. _______ 3. A copy of your most recent high school transcript and current mid-year report card. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 to be eligible. _______ 4. A copy of a Letter of Acceptance to a college, university, or other accredited post-secondary program. _______ 5. The page of the Student Aid Report with Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) you received from FAFSA. Note: This is our most important criteria in selecting applicants who demonstrate financial need. _______ 6. A copy of your SAT or ACT scores, if taken. ________ 7. These interviews will be held on: Tuesday, April 22, Wednesday April 23 or Thursday April 24 Beginning at 4:00 PM in the Parish House of Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster You will be notified by email or phone of the exact time of your interview. East King E. Mifflin It is your responsibility to confirm your appointment time as soon as you receive it and to notify the Scholarship Committee if you are unable to attend. The Guidance Department must submit the completed application to the Scholarship Committee on or before Wednesday, March 26, 2014. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE POLICIES FOR THE AWARDING OF SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS Note: This signed form must be returned with the application form. 1. Eligible applicants are seniors in high school in the year in which they apply. 2. Scholarship grants may be used for tuition, fees, and/or books. Students must submit bills and/or receipts for reimbursement. 3. Grants are given for one year only. Recipients may not reapply for additional grants. 4. Checks will be made out to school bursar or bookstore. Grants are not given directly to the student. 5. Grants are to be used in the year immediately following the student’s graduation from high school. At the discretion of the Scholarship Committee and under special circumstances with written notification by the recipient, grant money may be held for a student for a period of up to two years following the recipient’s graduation from high school. 6. If students have not claimed their grants by February 1 of the year immediately following the awarding of the grant, the funds will return to the scholarship program’s general fund.
