dried unless wearing protective clothing.
Although this remedy has been extensively tested under a large
variety of conditions, the registration holder does not guarantee
that it will be effective under all conditions. The activity and
effect thereof may be affected by factors such as abnormal soil,
climatic and storage conditions, quality of dilution water, com
patibility with other substances not indicated on the label and
the occurrence of resistance of a weed against the remedy, as
well as by the method, time and accuracy of application. The
registration hfolder furthermore does not accept responsibility
for damage to crops, vegetation, the environment or harm to
man or animal, or for lack of performance of the remedy con
cerned due to failure by the user to follow the label instructions,
or to the occurrence of conditions which could not have been
foreseen in terms of the registration. Consult the supplier in the
event of any uncertainty.

water equal to a minimum of 10 % of the container. Add the
rinsate to the contents of the spray tank before destroying the
empty container.
Destroy empty container and do not use for any other purpose.
3. RESISTANCE
For resistance management, BATELEUR GOLD is a group code
B and K(3) herbicide. Any weed population may contain indi
viduals naturally resistant to BATELEUR GOLD and other group
code B and K(3) herbicides. The resistant individuals can eventu
ally dominate the weed population if these herbicides are used
repeatedly and exclusively in programs. These resistant weeds
may not be controlled by BATELEUR GOLD or any other group
code B and K(3) herbicides.
For specific information on resistance management contact the registration holder of this product
4. USE RESTRICTIONS
BATELEUR GOLD on sweetcorn is only registered for the
use by Africa Sun Farms in the Ficksburg and Ladybrand
districts in the Free State.
BATELEUR GOLD may damage the above mentioned crops
under the following conditions:
• Poorly drained soils or soils with a compaction layer.
• Soils with a pH (H2O) of more than seven.
• Under conditions of heavy rain and/or irrigation on sandy or
gravely soils.
• Experimental or newly released cultivars. Consult a repre
sentative of Syngenta, the distributor or seed supplier.
• Cold and wet conditions.
• BATELEUR GOLD can be used on maize and soybeans
when planted on soil with a pH (H20) of more than seven.
• BATELEUR GOLD is not recommended for use in maize
in the following districts: Bothaville. Bultfontein, Hoopstad,
Kroonstad, Leeudoringstad, Makwassie, Viljoenskroon and
Wesselsbron.
• Do not use BATELEUR GOLD in crops where the seed has
been treated with organophosphate insecticides or where
such compounds have been placed in-furrow.
• BATELEUR GOLD may cause slight initial yellowing and
growth retardation of crops. However, these symptoms are
cosmetic and will not influence yield.
• The inadequate nutritional status of the soil for a particular
crop acts as a stress factor for the development of the crop. The presence of soil applied herbicides such as BATELEUR
GOLD may result in additional stress leading to a concomitant
reduction in the vigour of the crop.
• Do not mix BATELEUR GOLD with organophosphate insec
ticides.
ATELEUR GOLD must be applied prior to crop emerB
gence.
4.1 MINIMUM RECROPPING INTERVAL AND CROP ROTATION
GUIDELINES
The minimum recropping interval is the time between the last
application of BATELEUR GOLD and the anticipated date of
planting a subsequent crop.
BATELEUR GOLD / 2
To avoid injury to subsequent crops the following recropping
intervals should be observed:
•
•
•
•
Dry beans, soybeans, groundnuts and maize - nil.
Potatoes, wheat and grain sorghum - 3 months.
Sunflowers - 5 months.
For all other crops a replanting interval of at least 24 months
has to be observed, preceded by a test planting.
Important
The above mentioned waiting periods are valid only if the correct
dosage rate of BATELEUR GOLD according to soil type was
applied on a soil with a pH (H2O) of less than 7 and normal or
above average rainfall occurred during and following the season
in which the application was made.

Important
• Soils with a pH (H2O) of less than 5 and/or an organic matter
content of more than 3 %.
• Dry conditions directly after application or insufficient rain on
heavy soils.
• Grasskillers belonging to the chloroacetamide group of herbi
cides (that includes BATELEUR GOLD) are absorbed via the
coleoptile of grass weeds. Therefore, for good grass control
the herbicide needs to be present at lethal concentrations in
the top ± 50 mm of the soil profile. The adsorptive capacity
of a soil for these herbicides, as well as the amount of water
that moves through the soil profile with rain/irrigation, deter
mine the resultant concentration of these herbicides in the
top layers of the soil profile. As a result of the low adsorption
capacity of sandy soils (0 - 15% clay, <1% organic matter)
the amount of these herbicides can be reduced to sub-lethal
concentrations in the top ± 50 mm after the occurrence of
permeating rain (25 mm and more within one day). Persistent
rain (50 mm and more distributed over 3 - 7 days) will have
the same result. It can therefore happen that grasses germi
nate if such conditions prevail. A split application (as recom
mended in Table 1) is recommended if BATELEUR GOLD
is used on such soils. Permeating and/or persistent rain after
the split application will have the same result. Under the above
mentioned conditions poor control can also be expected of
swallow germinating broad leaf weeds such as purslane and
green goosefoot.
6. DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Use only as directed
6.1 COMPATIBILITY
The compatibility of BATELEUR GOLD with other products may
be influenced by the formulation of the products involved as well
as the quality of the water. Since the formulation of other pro
ducts may change without the knowledge of Syngenta and the
quality of water may vary from farm to farm, a physical compa
tibility test should always be carried out prior to application. BATELEUR GOLD is compatible with GESAPRIM 90 WG
(L4764), GESAPRIM SUPER (L3941) and METAGAN GOLD
(L5748).
6.2 MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
Replace cap after use
Half-fill the spray tank with water and add the required amount of
BATELEUR GOLD. Top up the spray tank with water until the
final volume has been obtained. Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus)
Ensure thorough agitation of the mixture in the tank during
mixing and spraying.
The control of C. esculentus may be improved provided the fol
lowing conditions are met:
Tank mixtures must be sprayed out immediately and not
allowed to stand in the spray tank.
• Planting is immediately preceded by a thorough ploughing with
a mouldboard plough.
• A relatively fine, even and firm seedbed is prepared.
• Herbicide application is followed by at least 10 - 20 mm of soft
penetrating rain (or irrigation) to leach the herbicide into the soil
prior to the emergence of C. esculentus (normally 7 - 10 days
after ploughing). These conditions are more likely to occur
during the latter half of the planting season (November). More
rain or irrigation is required on heavier soils to obtain good
results. This is the reason for the very poor control sometimes
obtained on turf soils.
• Rainfall following herbicide application but before emergence
of C. esculentus, is necessary for optimum C. esculentus
control. For this reason application of BATELEUR GOLD
should be made at or immediately after planting into moist soil.
• When planting into dry soil (insufficient moisture for C. esculentus germination) application should be timed as close
as possible to, but definitely before the first rains.
6.3 APPLICATION TECHNIQUES
Control of the above mentioned weeds may be detrimentally
affected by the following conditions:
• A poorly prepared seedbed.
6.3.1 Post plant pre-emergence
When planting into moist soil, BATELEUR GOLD must be
applied within three days after planting (but preferably at
planting) into a fine, even, firm and freshly prepared weed-free
seedbed. To obtain good results it is necessary that rain or irriga
tion follows application before the weeds emerge. If rainfall does
not occur in time and weeds begin to emerge and develop, a shal
low cultivation must be carried out to destroy these weeds and to
mix the herbicide with the top 10 - 20 mm of soil.
6.3.2 Ground application
BATELEUR GOLD may be applied with any medium or high
volume sprayer properly calibrated and which is equipped with
an efficient agitation mechanism. Choice and arrangement of fan
type spray nozzles should be such as to ensure even distribu
tion and optimal recovery of the herbicide. The recommended
amount of BATELEUR GOLD should be applied in at least
200 l water/ha.
