Greetings from the Commander
It seems the older we get, the faster the time flies by and this is no exception as we now approach football season and all the excitement that fall
brings with it. Post 41 supported a team-building event during this year's
Department convention and the ten Officers who attended were able to
gain much information and establish new contacts and ideas as we continue to embrace Legion programs at Post 41. We would like to thank our sister Post, Wheaton Post 268, for teaming with us and making our hospitability room one of the best during convention week. Thanks go to CDR
Bob Allen and his team!
Speaking of American Legion programs, we will be making every effort
to become more involved with Boys State, the Oratorical Contest and the
Police/Fire Safety Award Program this year and those interested in supporting this effort please step forward. With the dedication of PC Ted
Benton, Post 41 has most certainly supported the Baseball Program in an
outstanding manner and we will continue to do so going forward. I would
also like to thank the Past Commanders who have assisted and guided us
this past year in promoting our programs and ensuring that our Post operation is healthy and well attended to; they have been both an inspiration
and a symbol of volunteerism that makes the American Legion what it is
today.
A great example of teamwork was demonstrated during our most
recent and very successful Super 150 fundraising event. PC Ted Benton did
a fabulous job in organizing the event, Tim O'Toole and Norma Patterson
were the host and hostess extraordinaire along with a cast of other dedicated members who made this a huge success. Even the Bartender (Dixie)
donated all of the tips to the charitable cause. Representatives from
Warrior Canine Connection were also present and are the recipients of the
funds raised this year, their great work in training puppies to be warrior
companions is remarkable. Last but not least, we would like to thank VFW
Post 2562 members Paul Hannoman, Charles Thomas, Ron Cummings,
Mike Moore and Jeff & Dixie for donating the funds that supplied the roast
pig and chicken for this event.
Post 41 is also the proud sponsor of a project that involves a group of
Vietnam Veterans who have formed the Montgomery County Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Project. This project goal is to establish a Vietnam
Veterans memorial statue/sculpture to honor the 130 Montgomery County
Service Members who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in
Vietnam. This effort will involve working with Montgomery County officials and coordinating massive fund raising efforts to secure what is needed to honor our fallen.

POST HOME MANAGER
Tony Ragazzo

On Friday 19 September, the Post will conduct a solemn and ritualistic event in the
Post back yard that will involve the full meaning of each fold of the American flag that is
presented to a loved one as we bid them farewell to Post Everlasting. This is similar to
the event that we conducted last year that explained the meaning of the POW/MIA table.
After much organizing, presenting, meeting with politicians, attending hearings, and
promoting responsible gaming, Post 41 will finally have installed 4 slot machines on
Thursday 11 September 2014. This will afford us an opportunity to generate additional
income to support the many programs and charities that we so humbly embrace. We look
forward to this new and exciting opportunity and will certainly be mindful of responsible
participation.
In closing, I would like to thank each of you for allowing me the privilege of continuing to serve as the Commander of Post 41 and ask that we continue to dedicate ourselves
to helping one another and to maintain Post 41 as the friendliest Post in Maryland.

Adjutant's Report
AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL, AN OVERVIEW
For a good many years the American Legion baseball program has been in the forefront of Post 41's contributions to public service. We have sponsored teams year after year
and, unlike many posts elsewhere in the country, we receive no outside funding support
from public or private sources. We raise the necessary money from 100 and 150 club
events, raffles, and personal donations under the Baseball Booster program. It is a daunting task, since expenses each year run into the thousands of dollars.
As a supplement to the accounts of ongoing baseball activities reported by the baseball chairman, I offer a few comments on the program as a whole. American Legion baseball dates from 1925, only the eighth year of the Legion's existence. This fact offers ample
evidence of the Legion's recognition early on of the relationship of participation in athletics by young people to the development of good citizenship. One Major John L. Griffith,
representing what later became the Big Ten collegiate athletic conference, spoke at the
1925 annual convention of the Department of South Dakota and made a convincing case
for Legion sponsorship of a baseball program. Both Department of South Dakota and
national conventions endorsed the proposal.
Teams in several states were organized in time for the 1926 season: there even was a
Legion world series that year, held in Yonkers, New York. With the onset of the
Depression years the program fell on hard times but remained alive. During the booming postwar years the program flourished, as did the Legion itself. Today the program
faces competition from organizations for young people in other sports, but in
Montgomery County we are holding our own.
In recent memory I recall the names of Dave Smith and past commanders Arnie Solis
and Ben Haley as major players in the Post's baseball activities. I am certain there are others, and I regret their omission. More recently Ted Benton has most capably performed
the duties of baseball chair as has Neal Hines.
The baseball program is one of those activities in which we all share a commitment.
Let's keep up the good work.
In Legion service,
Warren McKay, Adjutant

Message from the
1st Vice Commander
Our new program year is off to a great start and Membership Renewals are coming
in hot and heavy!!! I had the privilege of attending the Department of Maryland
Convention this year and had a great time learning more about the American Legion.
The leadership at the County, District, and Department levels are passionate about a
strong program year, with Membership being a strong priority.
Our membership goal for the 2014-2015 program year is 453 total members. Our
membership target dates for this year are as follows:
Early Bird
Fall Meetings
Veterans Day
Pearl Harbor Day
Mid-Winter
President's Day
Legion Birthday
Children & Youth
Armed Forces Day

55%
65%
75%
80%
85%

You can help us achieve all our goals this year by renewing your membership as soon
as possible. More importantly, get into the habit of asking everyone you know if they
have served or are serving our country currently and ask them to come in as a guest to
check out our beautiful post. If every member would simply get one new member a year
to join our post and become active, we would double our current roster in no time.
After attending the Department of Maryland convention and hearing about some of
the challenges other posts are having, I can tell you we have one of the best posts in the
state of Maryland! It makes me proud to be a member of Post 41.
Please remember, Membership is everyone's responsibility, so please make it a point
to ask everyone you know, who's a veteran, to come for a visit and let's show them why
we are the "Friendliest Post in Maryland".

Ways and Means
I hope everyone had a great summer. This year has absolutely flown by, it's hard to believe that fall is right
around the corner.
We have had a busy couple months. A group of us attended the AL convention and took a turn hosting the
hospitality room. Tony Ragazzo and Ted Benton did a great job organizing, and all of us worked together with
perfect teamwork! Overall it went well, we all had a good time, gained some knowledge and enjoyed meeting
Legionnaires from all over Maryland.
Throughout the summer we have enjoyed our back yard, especially as all of our monthly Wounded Warrior
dinners (sponsored by Helping Hometown Heroes and Walter Reed Society) have been outdoor events. The
Pig Roast, Fish Fry, and Crab Feast were very nice events. We are looking forward to our End of Summer bash
coming up and the return of our favorite BBQ guy, Landon!!!!, welcome back. Thanks to everyone who has
stepped up and helped with these events, we appreciate your time and hard work. Although I try not to single anyone out (because it's hard not to miss someone) I have to say "thank-you" to Ted Benton and Mike
McRory for all the work you have done in the garden and the backyard, it looks awesome!
Our 150 event "Dog Days of Summer" was successful and I hope enjoyed by all. We do want to thank Jim
Foster and Mike Robertson for being such excellent salesmen. We also want to thank "the Caribbean
Connection" for your donation of the pork and the chicken. Your generosity allowed us to increase the donation given to Canine Connection.
We would like to welcome our new members. And to everyone, we are hoping to hear some new ideas or
suggestions from you to liven things up a bit. Please share them with someone at the post, drop a suggestion
in the box or contact me directly at [email protected].
Respectfully,
Dixie Johnson, 2nd Vice

least 75 career opportunities available at the career fair - all of which can be viewed on CSX's website.
Headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla., CSX Corporation owns and operates about 21,000 miles of railroad
tracks through its main subsidiary - CSX Transportation - that cover the Eastern Seaboard and eastern half of
the United States., extending into some parts of Canada. CSX employs about 36,000 employees, and about 20
percent of them are current military or veterans.
At CSX, veteran and military employees are often well suited to work within the company's union operations, which include positions as freight conductors, track workers, car repair workers, and communication and
signal technicians. Former military officers often find a home in management or leadership development roles.
On its web page devoted to recruiting military employees, CSX also offers a "Career Opportunities" matrix
for veterans to reference in determining how prior military experience and skills can be translated into careers
at the company. For example, a veteran or servicemember with logistics or transportation experience from the
military is well suited to work in CSX's transportation division as a freight conductor.

MRFF AGAIN
NAVY OFFICER SURVIVES TORTURE AS VIETNAM POW WITH AID OF HIS FAITH
Retired Rear Admiral Jeremiah Denton was captured in 1965 during the VIetnam war and held
for seven and one half years, including four years in solitary confinement. He had been shot down on July 18
of that year from the squadron on the carrier USS Independence and was not released until February 12, 1973.
He often spoke of his Catholic faith and said it was "by the grace of God that I'm still here. If it hadn't been
for the Rosary, I would have lost my sanity." He and others at times were moved from one camp to another
and at one time they lived in a tiny cell with a bucket for a toilet; they called it "Alcatraz."
He described being manacled on his hands and feet, stretched by pulleys until he cried out in agony and "If
offered myself to God with the admission that I could take no more on my own."
He fashioned a cross out of bamboo and hid it; when the guards found it they tore it up and three it down
an open sewer, but a work crew of Vietnamese made a cross out of straw and hid it in his cell. Admiral Denton
said, "They risked infinite torture if discovered."
He refused to write about the U.S. military and politics but later went on television for an interview.
Upon his return he said he saw a nation that had changed "from being proud to be one nation under God
to a country of conflict and factionalism, a fallen democracy."
Admiral Denton was elected to the United States Senate and served a single six-year term. He passed away
on April 1, 2014.
MASS IN HONOR OF FATHER CAPODANNO
On September 4, I will be attending the annual memorial Mass at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
for the cause of Father Vincent Capodanno's canonization. I have attended this event in the past and have
found it to be a moving and inspiring occasion.
Father Vincent Capodanno earned M.O.H. three purple hearts trying to save a Navy corpsman in Vietnam.
For a time he was our priest for the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines.
Please also check www.CapodannoGuild.org for much more valuable information. I wonder what MRFF
director Weinstein would say about these two men and their faith.

PAST COMMANDERS CLUB
Greetings all:
The Past Commanders meeting was held June 21st followed by election of 2015 Officers, with the following results:
President: Charles Wood
Secretary-Treasurer: Chuck Lucia
Chuck and I look forward to serving and to another great year.
Our last annual raffle was a huge success. On behalf of the Past Commanders, we thank you and greatly appreciate your participation and support to assist and carry on our continued efforts to our fellow service members and the veterans VAVS Program. This year we will also be donating to the American Legion
Boys State program. Our next annual upcoming raffle will provide you another opportunity to win a great
cash prize but also help our fellow veterans. Winner will be randomly selected Saturday December 13th,
during Army-Navy Game half time. You do not have to be present to win.
Kindly mark your calendars for the upcoming Past Commanders meeting which will be held Sunday,
September 14th, @ 12N, prior to Redskin/Philadelphia Eagles game. Your attendance is most important
and I urge all Past Commanders to attend.
Also mark your calendars for the upcoming Army-Navy Game camaraderie, Saturday, December 13th,
for what has become a well anticipated and attended sporting rivalry at Post 41 including a "pot luck" luncheon, big screen TV, raffles and lots of fun.
Thanks to those Commanders who have paid their 2015 dues, however, a few Past Commanders dues
remain outstanding. A friendly reminder to renew your Past Commanders dues ($15.00) - Post #41 values
your continued support. Let's get those dues in the mail or drop them off at the Post Home.
God bless you and God bless our Troops.

Greetings,
Hope everyone is enjoying these late summer
weeks. Thanks to all who attended our August meeting. We accomplished a key objective there, in identifying four charities that we'll be making our next
round of donations to:
· MCVET (Maryland Center for Veterans Education
and Training)
· The USO of Metropolitan Washington
· The American Legion Child Welfare Fund
· Our House, a residential training center for at-risk
youth that we've partnered with in the past
We also began planning for our next fundraising
event, which we're targeting for mid-October.
Special thanks to all my fellow officers, including
Steven Missimer, who's off to a great start in processing membership renewals. If you haven't yet done so,
please be an "early bird" and get your renewal
processed.
Last but not least, thanks to those who've
approached me about becoming new members. I
look forward to seeing you around the post, and
hopefully at our next meeting!
Greetings Members:
Just a reminder: As we kick off the new 2015
membership year, ALA members are cordially invited to our ALA Wine & Cheese Meet & Greet to be
