Annual Report 2007 The flowers shown on pages 7 and 9-11 were grown in the Elim Park Place residents’ garden. Mission Elim Park is a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community whose mission is to provide quality care through comprehensive wellness programs and medical facilities for our residents in a Christ-centered environment. Elim Park looks upon its mission as an extension of the Church ministry within the Baptist General Conference and gives admission priority to its members. Residents are encouraged to grow spiritually as they live out their lives at a level of wellness and independence appropriate to their individual situation. Welcome to Elim Park Ron Dischinger Elim Park President and Chief Executive Officer Dear Friend, Welcome to Elim Park! Our Annual Report this year illustrates the numerous ways Elim Park is part of the Greater Cheshire community as well as the vital role the community plays at Elim Park. Since moving to Cheshire from Shelton, CT in 1958, Elim Park, a not for profit continuing care retirement community, has been a vibrant and integral member of the community. We provide a wonderful living option for the area’s seniors that allows them to remain vital and active citizens while enjoying a fulfilling lifestyle, featuring security, safety and peaceof-mind, all within a Christ centered environment. We are also an important part of Cheshire’s economy. With 350 employees, many of whom live in Cheshire, we are the town’s third largest employer. Along with remaining socially active in the area, our 300 independent seniors continue to shop and run errands in town, helping to support local businesses and adding vitality to the regional economy. As an active member of the Greater Cheshire Chamber of Commerce for the past 28 years, we play a key role in enhancing the community’s business climate. In addition to hosting Chamber events, we also serve as a meeting place for numerous civic and social organizations. We are proud to call Cheshire “home” and look forward to continuing to serve the community, its seniors and their families for years to come. Nancy Butterfield Chair, Board of Directors |4| Sheldon Dill, Pat Bowman and Elim Park’s Carl Jahrstorfer An Essential Part of the Community It was many years ago, but Sheldon Dill’s eyes still light up when he recalls his first visit to Elim Park. “I stopped by for their Christmas Festival, and I was very impressed with the community,” explained Sheldon, a Cheshire resident for more than 50 years and a respected, friendly businessperson who chooses his words thoughtfully. “But what really caught my eye were the relationships between the staff and the residents. There was an undeniable bond of mutual respect and friendship there. That image has stayed with me throughout the years.” As the executive director of the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, Sheldon is in a position to see daily the true breadth of Elim Park’s impact on Cheshire and the surrounding communities. “Many people think of Elim Park as a local retirement community that they can turn to for their parents’ or some other relatives’ needs. But as a long-time business person, I can tell you Elim Park |5| is far more than that,” said Sheldon. “They are a vital part of the local business community and a valued and active member of the Chamber of Commerce. They help create a stronger local economy by supporting area businesses and have funded additional training and equipment for the Cheshire Police and Fire Departments on a yearly basis. Elim Park does a lot for our community behind the scenes and in ways most people never stop to consider.” Pat Bowman, owner of R.W. Hines Ace Hardware, knows firsthand the importance of Elim Park to local businesses. “As a small business owner, I appreciate the business of longtime customers,” emphasized Pat. “Elim Park has been with us for over 28 years. They are an essential part of my company’s business and of the community.” Ellie Draper and Her b Strand It’s a Small World For years, Herb Strand was known around Cheshire as simply “the egg man.” As the proprietor of Strand Farm on Mount Sanford Road, Herb’s blue eyes and warm smile greeted the residents of the Cheshire area as he delivered fresh, local eggs to the doorsteps of 700 customers and stores. Today, Herb remains close to family, friends and the town he calls “home” while living in the Mallard Mill residential neighborhood at Elim Park. “After my wife passed away, the farm got to be too big and too much work,” recalled Herb. “I have lived in Cheshire since 1948 and didn’t want to move far from my friends. Living at Elim Park allows me to stay in town. It’s comfortable, there are things to do, the people are friendly and the food is excellent. Several of my friends already live here, and my niece Nancy lives close by in Wallingford.” One of Herb’s friends is Doris Raynor, who is in the process of moving into Elim Park Place. Doris and Herb both attend services at Trinity Evangelical Free Church of Woodbridge, as do several other Elim Park residents. With the comfort of familiar friends and continued ties with his church, Herb was at ease with the decision to move to Elim Park Place. Another long-time friend at Elim Park is Housekeeping Supervisor Eloise “Ellie” Draper. Possessing a warm smile and a generous heart that envelopes all around her, Ellie recently celebrated 38 years of employment at Elim Park and can remember Herb and his wife delivering 60 dozen eggs every week to the Elim Park kitchen. “I’ve known Mr. Strand for 30 years. He and Mrs. Strand always came by and delivered our eggs. They were both such hard workers,” remembered Ellie. “It’s nice to have him living here now. We chat about the days when he delivered eggs and about his farm. A lot of his customers from Cheshire live here now. It’s a small world.” |6| Julie Planeta and outpatient, Dale Spaner Cheshire is Our Home Helping others in the community is second nature to Julie Planeta, MPT (Masters in Physical Therapy), and her husband Matthew. After graduating from nearby Quinnipiac University in 2001, Julie began working as a physical therapist at Elim Park’s spacious and wellknown short-term and outpatient rehabilitation center. Here, Julie, who is always smiling and speaking words of encouragement, spends her days helping people, including many from surrounding communities, recover from back and neck injuries, strokes or regain their strength and mobility after joint replacement surgery. Last year, Elim Park’s rehab program treated 450 patients, 219 of whom were outpatients, including 92 from Cheshire. “We use specific conditioning exercises and treatments like ultrasound and electric stimulation to help our people recover and regain their quality of life,” Julie enthusiastically explained one morning of late in the sunlit rehabilitation center. “Although we treat all ages, we have a tremendous amount of experience treating seniors and |7| helping them remain independent and active. The new Wellness Center will expand our therapy program, allowing us to conduct rehabilitation exercises in a warm water pool. Aqua-therapy is an exciting tool and will be a huge benefit for our patients.” Inspired to help others, Julie and Matthew recently moved to Cheshire from Branford. Matthew, who teaches seventh grade at Dodd Middle School, felt he could be a stronger role model and influence on his students if he lived in Cheshire and they saw him around town, outside of school. “A lot of the recent incidents in schools reported in the papers really bothered my husband. He wants to make a positive difference,” said Julie. “So we moved here and got involved in the community. Matthew coaches girls’ softball, I play in the town’s softball league and am in the community chorus, and we joined Grace Baptist Church. Cheshire is our home now.” Thank you Vo l u n t e e r s Chuck Adams Nora Adams Katie Alberti Terry Amodeo Lisa Amore Henry Andersen Myrtle Andersen Jessica Andrea Henry Andersen Myrtle Andersen Arianne de Asis Josh Baia Fred Beck Mary Beck Ashley Beedle Cecelia Belenardo Alice Bellin Rita Bialecki Gayle Bird Taylor Blauvelt Pauline Bozentka Robert Bristol Shirley Bristol Alyce Brooks Warren Brooks Margaret Brosious Lindsay Bryden Donald Bunger Jean Byrne Dwight Campbell Marie Campbell Pauline Canelli Matthew Cannizzaro Matthew Carroll Gil Cannon Evelyn Carlson Milton Carlson Robert Carlson Verna Carlson Brandon Carney Amanda Censoprano Mary Colwell Catherine Cota George Coutts Gladys Dahlberg Holly Darr Brian Davis Art Dayton Nancy Dayton Paul Dearborn Ruth Dearborn Kathleen Denegre Melissa DePaolo Brendan Devine Bernie Dillon Grace Dillon Audrey Disbrow Annette Donovan Bryan Dorsey Kim Dorsey Allen Drew Tootie Drew Dave Eaton Harry Egner Ruth Egner Robert Engengro Jeanie England Peggy Eppeheimer William Eppeheimer Elisa Ernstoff Dan Feldshon Judith Ferrandiz Robert Ferrandiz Mary Flannery Sarah Grace Fletcher Ellen Flaherty Erin Flynn Louis Forsell Mary Ann Forsell Jeff Forte Janice Fraser Russell French Betty Garms Karl Garms Gene Genovesi Marie Genua Sara Giovanelli Deanna Giulietti Genny Grow Christine Gura Joyce Gustafson Carol Hamlin Walter Hamlin Hazel Hansen Magnus Hansen Ruth Hansen Vale Hardy Jane Harper Betty Hawes Ray Hawes Adele Hazard Helen Honeychurch Richard Hoyt Dottie Hoyt Susan Hurt Hope Hyrb Ann Jacek Fran Jackson Addie Jacobs Allen Jacobs Pat Jahrstorfer Shelia Johnson Mary Jo Jones Richard Jones Terry Joyce Joel Kelleher Helen Konke Jason Krajcek Lydia Krier Stanley Krier Delores Krom Elaine Kuhrt Wesley Kyle Janet Lendino Jimmy Li Lorraine Littlefield Calla Lord Barney Long Marian Long Marcy Macinauskas James Madgic Hima Mamillapalli Marcy Macinauskas Kaitlin Markoja Kristy Martinelli Eleanore Mays Ashley-Marie Merced Shirley Michel Gerry Milhous Ken Milhous Everett Miller Louise Miller Peggy Miller Frank Miner Janice Miner Joshua Morales Al Morency Robert Moseley Joan Mosher Mary McCleary Colin McCoy Joanne McCoy Ryan McCoy Virginia McCurdy Dave McGalliard Patricia McGalliard Jessica McGrath Les Newill Vivian Newill Rose Notaro Carolyn Nowie Connie Olsen Phyllis Palm Brandon Palma Colin Palma Dolly Peabody Agnes Pedersen John Peterson Pete Peterson Kelly Pfeiffer Dave Proto Betty Redfield Audrey Reid Roy Reid Frank Replogle Ruth Replogle Karissa Renkewith Melanie Rice Magda Rios Marcia Robbie Ruth Rogers Janice Rood Orville Roones Trudy Roones Ann Rose George Rose Norman Rose Betty Rosenbaum Marjorie Ruck Stephen Ruck Jane Sampson Kay Saulnier Marge Schieman Shirley Schiller Nilani Shankar Carol Simpson Darlene Simpson Hal Simpson Victoria Simpson Sarah Sirry Carol Shank Richard Shank Kelly Sheehan Betty Shutts Max Slade Kit Sletten Lois Sprague Brian Stanton Don Steele Dot Steller Perry Stevens Nathan St. Martin Ruth Tallaksen Esther Tompkinson Rene Tompkinson Maggie Tooley Melissa Tuohy Dot Turner Lucille Underwood Willis Underwood Kay Vadala Betty Vecchitto Jackie Vera-Linares Dolores Vizziello Marie Wall Kelly Walsh Marion Washburn Doris Wason John Wason Janet Watrous Mackenzie Welch Henrietta Werner Stephen Woodward Evelyn Zimmer |8| Board of Directors Nancy Butterfield RN, MSN Chair Trumbull, CT - Retired RN and Director of Clinical Services with VNS Derek Mogck JD, MSPA Vice Chair Simsbury, CT - Attorney with Shipman and Goodwin, Hartford, CT Terrence Brennan BA, CPA Treasurer Ron Larson D Min Secretary Rocky Hill, CT - Chief Financial Officer for Applied Spine Technologies, Inc. in New Haven Canton, CT - Director of Strategic Plan and Missions, Northeast Baptist Conference in Marlborough, MA Ray Adams MBA Immediate Past Chair Bogart, GA Retired Vice President Human Relations at Exxon, Houston, TX Mark Johnson MA, CFRE Kensington, CT - Vice President of Development, Klingberg Family Centers of New Britain Bruce Walpole BSCE, P.E. Ways to Give Giving can take a variety of forms, and careful planning can help maximize the advantages to you and to Elim Park. Through planning and commitment, you can make a lasting difference in the future of Elim Park and its residents. To learn more about specific gift plans, contact Carl Jahrstorfer, Director of Planned Giving at 203-272-3547 ext. 172 or via email at [email protected]. |12| Bethel Place for Worship and the Performing Arts Opening in the Spring of 2008, Bethel Place for Worship and the Performing Arts will provide Elim Park residents and the community with a first-rate venue in which to enjoy cultural events, including music, drama, dance and lectures. Worship services, and other life enriching spiritual gatherings, will also be featured. Nelson Hall, named in honor of Hilmer Nelson and his family’s decades-long support of Elim Park’s mission, will seat up to 320 in comfortable, theatre-style seats with additional space reserved for 30 handicapped people. Excellent views and a sound and lighting system will enhance the events. Highlights of this masterpiece of design and aesthetics will include 14 stained glass windows, a restored Moehler pipe organ and a refurbished 1939 Steinway concert grand piano, greatly enhancing the richness of planned chamber music and choral concerts. Community Participation The new Wellness Center and the Bethel Place for Worship and the Performing Arts were made possible through the vision, ingenuity and tireless efforts of 53 community members who graciously volunteered to be on several planning committees and task forces. Elim Park would like to thank them all, particularly Bill Meyerjack, C.P.A, who chaired the Celebrate Life! Capital Campaign; Sheldon Dill, Executive |13| Director of the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce; Cheshire Mayor Matt Hall; Phil Anderson, of FIP Construction and Nora Adams, Elim Park resident. Elim Park Wellness Center Elim Park’s new Wellness Center, scheduled to open in Spring 2008, will further enhance our innovative health and fitness program that has placed the continuing care retirement community among the national leaders in promoting people’s wellness in body, mind and spirit. Highlights of the center include a warm water pool, group exercise studio and a strength training and cardiovascular exercise room. The pool will enable the professional and caring rehabilitation staff to provide valuable aquatic therapies to the hundreds of patients who utilize Elim Park’s short-term and outpatient rehabilitation programs on an annual basis. Plans are to also add water aerobics, water walking and swimming to the retirement community’s health and fitness offerings for residents and wait-list members. The new Wellness Center will also allow Elim Park to expand its exercise and fitness programs, which are developed and conducted under the supervision of a nationally certified exercise physiologist. Among the exciting new classes for residents to be unveiled in the new center is a FallProof! class, which will improve participants’ balance and mobility, thereby decreasing the risk of a fall and possible injury. Additional services will be available such as massage therapy and person training. Creating an environment where people can remain independent and active is the primary goal of the wellness program. Dear Friend, As I reflect upon the past year and the Celebrate Life! Capital Campaign, I am humbled by the experience. The campaign helped fund The Wellness Center and Bethel Place for our residents and the greater Cheshire community. I am touched by the generosity of our donors; from the dollar a week a part time staff member gives; to the sacrificial giving from our residents, businesses and friends; to the major lead gift from Hilmer and Ethel Nelson in Minnesota. All our donors personally demonstrate a passion to continue Elim Park's century-long mission of service to others. For that, our team says “THANK YOU.” To our many friends and neighbors, I offer a personal greeting. I am blessed to know you and to have received your support and encouragement. May God continue to bless you in 2008 as we serve one another in His love and grace. Carl Jahrstorfer Director of Planned Giving |13| Va l u e s To assist us in fulfilling our mission, we embrace and place into daily practice the following values: Honor God in all we do. Realizing that God has raised up this ministry and has sustained it since 1906, we seek to honor Him through our service and whatever we do, we “do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Col. 3:23). Encourage spiritual growth. Desiring that each resident grow spiritually throughout their life at Elim Park, opportunity is presented “to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) so that “though the outer man perish, yet the inner man is renewed day by day” (2 Cor. 4:16), that “none should see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ,” (Luke 2:26). Respect the dignity of life. Each person is God’s creation. In God’s “hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind” (Job 12:10). The love God has for each of his children is enough reason for us to have a great respect for the dignity of life. Commit to excellence. It is important that our service be the best of which we are capable. Our work will be excellent if we truly are “doing service as to the Lord, and not to men,” (Eph. 6:7). Respect the individual. In I Thessalonians 5:12 we are told to “respect those who work hard among you.” And in Galatians 6:10 we are admonished to “do good to all men especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Hire and retain highly competent staff that have a caring attitude and high moral character. The key to service excellence is the staff. We seek those like Daniel whom God favored, being “skillful in all wisdom and gifted in knowledge and understanding” (Dan. 1:4). Staff should also have the caring heart and high moral character of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-35). While it is difficult to find all of these qualities in any one individual, they serve as a reliable guide for selecting staff. Employees are empowered to act in the best interests of the residents and the organization and become good stewards of the resources entrusted to them. Maintain open communication. In order to provide a harmonious environment for residents and staff, it is essential that communication flow freely. “Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity,” (Ps. 133:1). Be fiscally responsible. We must be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us. Every asset is a gift from God to be used for the residents who live at Elim Park, “for we aim at what is honorable in the Lord’s sight, but also in the sight of man,” (II Cor. 8:21). “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful,” (I Cor. 4:2).
