Our newest learners, the Kindergarten students, are always excited to show me their newest play dough creations or Animated Alphabet drawings. They even made scrambled eggs to celebrate the letter “e”!! Mrs. Tenveen’s class has been actively exploring a variety of vegetables from Mrs. Tenveen’s garden, as well as identifying and sorting the various seeds. The Literacy Centers in Mrs. Colonna’s class provide the students with opportunities to explore reading and writing in fun and interesting ways. By working in groups or individually, the students are keen to demonstrate the activity and talk about their learning. Our Grade 4/5 students have taken their learning outside and have been using nature to create some pretty cool art designs. By using patterns, symmetry and a variety of natural colours, the students have displayed some wonderful artistic talent. Our Grade 6/7 leaders have been stepping up to a variety of responsibilities and positive comments are being made about the work they are doing. Our leaders are taking on the responsibility of morning announcements, facilitating the daily breathing break, helping the Kindergarten students in the computer lab and acting as Lunch Monitors to help our Lunch Hour Supervisors during eating time. Thank you, Grade 6/7 leaders, and we’re looking forward to seeing you continue to take on new responsibilities. Interim reports will be coming home during the week of October 19th – 22nd. Please remember, if you ever have any questions or concerns about your child’s academic, social or emotional progress, you are more than welcome to set-up a time to talk with your child’s teacher. Sincerely, Joel Menzies Principal Water Walk and Toonie Tuesday October is always a busy month, for a good cause. For several years, School District #83 has worked hard to support Free the Children. Three big events will take place over the next few weeks. 1. Water Walk. On October 19th, our Grade 4-7 students will be visiting Shuswap Middle School to listen to an inspirational presentation by Spencer West. After the presentation, the students will walk to South Broadview Elementary to participate in the third annual Water Walk. In order to gain a better understanding of the efforts people in developing countries go through, just to get water for their families, the students will be carrying buckets of water from the pond beside the curling rink to South Broadview Elementary. 2. We Day Vancouver. On October 20th and 21st, Ms. Bargery and the Grade 7 students will be traveling to Vancouver and participating in We Day 2015. Created by Free the Children to celebrate the power of young people to create positive change, We Day is a day-long event that ignites a year-long program for change, called We Schools in Action. In cities across Canada, the event brings inspirational speeches and performances to young leaders. Students then bring that energy home to take action on local and international issues all year long. Free The Children's We Day is the celebration, the inspiration and the vehicle for young people to change the world. 3. Toonie Tuesday. Mark Tuesday, October 27th on your calendars!! The Grade 7s will be organizing our seventh annual Toonie Tuesday, where students from across our school district will focus their efforts on raising money to support the “Adopt a Village” project. Students and families will receive more information, from the Global Leadership club, in the near future. Remember… think “Me to We.” Start saving your toonies! 6285 East Ranchero Drive ● Salmon Arm, BC ● V1E 2P9 ● Phone 250.832.7018 ● Fax 250.833.1127 A Few Reminders This is a friendly reminder that school supply and activity fees are overdue. Fees for the students are as follows: Mrs. Rokosh class and Mrs. Tenveen’s class - $60, and all other classes - $50. A few weeks ago, NorCard fundraising magazines and order forms were sent home. This school fundraiser helps pay for the Mathletics program that most of our students use on a weekly basis. All NorCard orders are due back to the school office this Friday, October 16th. Finally, we are still having issues with the online consent forms. In order to move forward with this, we will have to send paper copies home for parents/guardians/students to sign. Families can expect these forms to be sent home at the beginning of next week. Volleyball A very keen group of Grade 6/7 students have begun their volleyball season. Practices have been taking place every Tuesday and Thursday at Lunch, where the students have been developing their skills and knowledge of the game of volleyball. Ranchero’s first games will be this Thursday, as the we host Falkland and MV Beattie for a mini-tournament. Ranchero will also play teams from Len Wood Middle School and Shuswap Middle School, throughout the season. Halloween Coin Carnival As Halloween takes place on a Saturday, Ranchero Elementary will be having our Halloween celebration on Friday, October 30th. The students will be invited to wear their costumes to school, for the morning only. At Lunch, the students will have a chance to change into their regular clothes. After Lunch, we will hold our annual Halloween Coin Carnival. The teachers and the Grade 6/7 students will organize and run several fun carnival style games for the students to enjoy. More detailed information will be sent home, closer to October 30th. Identity Day After taking a break last year, Ranchero Elementary will have its second Identity Day. The whole purpose behind Identity Day is for the students to celebrate themselves!! Each student will highlight a passion, talent or interest and share this with the rest of the school community. This is an opportunity for the children to work with their parents on a presentation to bring to school. We truly hope families will take the opportunity to work together and share in the joy of creating something special. Identity Day will take place on Tuesday, November 17th. There will be time during the day for parents, guardians and guests to visit the school and look at the displays. The school will also be open during the evening for families to come and look at the displays. The announcement for Identity Day is being made now, so students have lots of time to prepare. More specific information will be sent home at the beginning of next week. 6285 East Ranchero Drive ● Salmon Arm, BC ● V1E 2P9 ● Phone 250.832.7018 ● Fax 250.833.1127 Parent Advisory Council (PAC) News All parents, with children in the public school system automatically become members of the school’s Parent Advisory Council.
