Week 4 of Kindred: "Blood and Water"

Week 4 of Kindred: "Blood and Water"
Luke 22:19-20: "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my
body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying,
'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'"
Summary:
Baptism is an important sacrament. The Anabaptists believed that the meaning was the important
part of the baptism process. And while other reformers during the 1600's were doing infant baptism, the
Anabaptists felt that only an adult who understood the meaning could choose to be baptized. When a
person is baptized, they are resolving to have their full allegiance to God. They are dying to their old life
and beginning their new life after being baptized.
Communion is also an important sacrament. Jesus wanted his followers to have a reminder about
their dedication to him. This was represented in the last supper that Jesus had with his disciples. In that
supper, he wanted his followers to meet together regularly and break bread with one another. In so doing,
they would remember the sacrifice that Jesus made as well as their vow to honor a transforming
relationship with him. We believe that Communion doesn't have to be held at a church service, but is
available whenever two or more believers meet with one another.
