Dear Sir/Madame,
Having accomplished my master’s degree of Engineering while gaining first-hand experience with a
large private firm advanced my engineering skills in both the theoretical and practical field. For this
reason, I chose to undertake the Commodity Trading programme at the Université de Genève to
pursue further academic studies and gain professional experience simultaneously. I plan to focus on
the international trading sector due to my interest in the development of infrastructure, its complex
logistics and financial investments, all applied in a multinational environment. Given my bilingualism
in English and French along with a proficient level of Spanish, my command of three of the most
influential languages worldwide will serve as a significant advantage when entering the international
trading world. Altogether, I am confident that this opportunity will provide the essential tools needed
for the proper start to a career in the commodity trading sector, with the right establishment.
Several experiences incited my passion for commodity trading and desire to work within this field.
Firstly, while writing my master’s dissertation I became fascinated with infrastructure development,
and more specifically the volatility in return on investments for a country with an unstable economy.
Whilst working as a graduate engineer in central London, I was attracted to the logistics of large civil
engineering projects; developing my interest in risk and operations management. Working on a
project with tremendous time constraints gave me the hunger for my long-term career to be in a
demanding and fast-paced environment. Following that experience, my focus shifted and I began to
think extensively in infrastructure, investments, and international logistics.
I decided to undertake a master’s degree in engineering to gain strong academic skills in a quantitative
field and to form a broad foundation before pursuing a specialisation in commodity trading. The strong
work ethic I developed to achieve a 1st with Honours in my master’s demonstrates my ability to acquire
a range of technical skills to rapidly overcome obstacles I face.
After completing my master’s, I supervised thirty labour workforces in an environment where the
consequences of my management and technical directives could have a significant impact on the
company. This challenging task was only achieved with strong communication and thorough discipline
within my team, from whom I gained a great deal of experience in co-operative work. With the lessons
learned in the fast-paced, risk-filled construction environment of central London, I feel prepared to
tackle the volatile nature of commodity trading.
Additionally, my bilingualism in English and French contributed to my interest in working in the
international market, and I believe Geneva to be the perfect place to pursue a career in commodity
trading with that goal. I am currently enrolled in an intensive Spanish language course to achieve
fluency and acquire B2-level certification. Having a confident use of three of the most influential
languages worldwide will enrich my ability to communicate professionally within the international
trading environment.
This academic-professional approach to the master’s programme launched by the STSA and the
University of Geneva provides an incredible opportunity for an individual such as myself, offering the
best possible tools for the start of a long-term career in the commodity trading sector.
I imagine you have spent hours of your time reading through many letters, and may very well be
exhausted of such task. For this reason, I personally thank you for having taken the time to read
through mine, and I look forward to hearing from you.
