Despite the success of the Sul Ross State team, upon arriving home from that World Series performance Ogletree was informed that the baseball program had been dropped. With that turn of events, Sul Ross State’s loss would be Pan American’s gain. A 1952 graduate of Texas A&M where he also earned a master’s degree in 1956, Ogletree played professional baseball for two seasons and spent two years in the United States Army as an officer. His coaching career began at the University of Dallas as he led them to an 82-45 record with a mark of 71-26 over his last four seasons. From 1966 to 1968, Ogletree was Sul Ross State where he posted a 50-46 record, including the 1968 NAIA World Series appearance. While he’d already coached successfully for 11 years, the road ahead of him would be filled with some of the most impressive years he would spend as a head coach. Ogletree would then bring his passion for the game to the Pan American baseball program where in 29 seasons as head coach he would make his mark in the record books as one of the most winningest coaches in NCAA history. In 1971, he coached the Broncs to a fourth-place finish at the College World Series, and the team notched a 44-9 record that season. At the end of the year, The Sporting News named him as the nation’s Coach of the Year. He received Coach of the Year honors from his colleagues in the NCAA District VI, the Texas Sports Writers’ Association and the South Plains Professional Scouts Association. In his years at Pan American, Ogletree recorded a 1,084-618-1 record for a .637 winning percentage. He retired in 1997, finishing 17 wins over the 1,200 win mark in his 41 years of coaching collegiate baseball. During his tenure as a college head coach, Ogletree helped develop 175 future coaches, including current UTPA head coach Willie Gawlik and his predecessor, Reggie Tredaway. He also coached current Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ pitching coach Jim Hicky and Perry Hill, who is the first base coach for the Florida Marlins. He has seen over 80 of his former players signed professional contracts and ranks 15th on the all-time wins list in NCAA History. Ogletree claimed he was impacted by every student-athlete that ever played for him. However, most of them would say that the influence he had on them was more valuable then any great baseball moment they experienced on the field. One of those men who not only played for Ogletree, but also worked under him as an assistant for 22 years was Reggie Tredaway. When Ogletree found out Sul Ross State had dropped baseball and that he was moving on to coach at Pan American, he only took one of his players with him, which turned out to be Tredaway. He was an All-American third baseman as a freshman and was looking to have an outstanding career. “I didn’t want to bring a lot of players with me because I knew they already had a team that had been quite successful making it to the NCAA playoffs in 1968. I told several of the boys to go to junior colleges then I would look at picking them up in the next few years, but I knew I needed to bring Reggie with me,” said Ogletree Tredaway would play a major role in Pan American’s success in the next three years, including playing on the 1971 College World Series Team. After Ogletree retired in 1997, he strongly suggested that Tredaway be given the head coaching responsibilities. UTPA agreed, and Tredaway continued the legacy from 1998-02. “It’s really hard to describe how much of an impact this man (Ogletree) has had on my life. He was the ultimate player’s coach. He had such a good relationship with the athletes, and it made every one of them want to play harder every time they stepped on the field to represent him and the school,” said Tredaway. Included in those 175 athletes that Ogletree helped develop into future coaches are current Bronc head coach Willie Gawlik and for- 2007 Baseball Media Guide Legacy PREVIEW PLAYERS OPPONENTS REVIEW Willie Gawlik, Coach Al, UTPA President Cárdenas COACHES HISTORY Coach Al & Mrs. Ogletree with Jim Hickey UTPA www.utpabroncs.com the collegiate COACH AL OGLETREE’S world of baseball MILESTONE VICTORIES for over four WIN SCHOOL OPPONENT DATE SCORE decades, and his hard work and 1 University of Dallas Austin College Mar. 4, 1961 7-2 dedication to the UTPA baseball pro100 Sul Ross State New Mexico Highlands Mar. 12, 1967 5-1 gram was recog200 Pan American University of Texas Mar. 6, 1971 3-1 nized when he became an inau300 Pan American Texas Lutheran April 20, 1973 6-2 gural member into 400 Pan American Baylor University April 19, 1975 8-3 the UTPA Athletics Hall of Fame in 500 Pan American Cornell University April 4, 1977 1-0 February of 2007. When faithful of the Broncs talk about the legacy and tradition of the UTPA baseball program, the topic always begins with one man – Al Olgetree. INTRO future coaches are current Bronc head coach Willie Gawlik and former assistant coach Kiki Trevino. Gawlik played for him during the early years of his coaching career from 1969-1972 while Trevino was a pitcher for Ogletree and graduated the year of his retirement in 1997. “Coach Ogletree was the kind of coach that gave you the sense that you were a man, and you would do things the way they should be done. He showed me having high morals and working hard would lead to success. Each and every one of us wanted to play hard for him because we didn’t want to let him down. In my coaching career, I feel like I know how to treat the players because of how he treated me when I played,” said Trevino of Ogletree. “Coach Al has meant so much to me and to this program that it is hard to describe his impact. I have so much respect for him and how he has affected my life and career in so many different ways. He has influenced so many players to become coaches and his impact on those coaches has a ripple effect that will touch every athlete connected to his theory on the game. The man is so widelyrespected that everywhere we play someone comes up to me and will ask about him,” said Gawlik. Along with having the opportunity to honor him though the Al Ogletree Classic, Gawlik claims that through his experiences with Ogletree he has achieved a better understanding of the game of baseball and how to coach it. “He always had such high expectations of us as player, and I see myself expecting that of my own team. I expect them to be the best and work as hard as they possible can. Those are all the same standards that were expected of me when I played for him. His mentorship has made me a better coach and carried my career right back to UTPA where his relationship and friendship to me began. His influence on me is instrumental in my life, and I know anyone who every played for him would say the same thing,” Gawlik commented. Ogletree has been a legend in Coach Al throwing first pitch 37 INTRO COACHES PREVIEW PLAYERS OPPONENTS REVIEW HISTORY UTPA College World Series W hen asked about his Broncs’ team in 1971, former head coach Al Ogletree always responds, “I had all the young men that no one else wanted, but we had a good year.” A ‘good year’ could be the understatement of the century as the Broncs played the roles of the underdogs during the District VI regional tournament. However – the Broncs pulled one of the greatest victories in program history by shutting out the University of Texas twice, which were the Longhorns first consecutive shutout performances in 62 years. With the victory, Pan American was crowned District VI Champions. “Lupe Salinas pitched a 1-0 shutout then Gary Doyle pitched the second with a 4-0 victory that would send us to the College World Series in Omaha,” Ogletree said. At the College World Series, the team would go on to play Southern Illinois University, who handed the Broncs a 54 loss in the first round “It was close game, which would have been even closer, but we had a base runner miss third and that run would have made it a tie ball game. Salinas pitched well enough to win, but sometimes those are the breaks,” Ogletree stated. The opening game loss sparked an even more determined Pan Am team heading into their second game match-up. In game two, the Broncs faced Seton Hall and with the strong pitching of Doyle, the team would go on to an 8-2 victory. As game three approached, Ogletree decided on Andre Rabouin to take responsibilities on the mound, and the Broncs’ starter hurled a complete-game shutout against Harvard, 1-0. “It was the first time he had ever pitched a nine-inning game, and he was given a standing ovation from his team when he got on the bus to go back to the hotel.” The final game of the CWS would turn out to be a rematch between the Broncs and the Southern Illinois team that handed the team their earlier loss. “We didn’t understand why we were facing this team again. It didn’t really make sense because there were teams we hadn’t face yet. The guys played with a lot of heart, but we lost it in the final inning,” Ogletree said. The 1971 team would see their season come to an end after leading the game until the final inning where they fell behind 8-6 and suffered their second defeat against SIU. Although the season had come to a close, there was much to celebrate about. The 1971 Broncs finished the season with 44 victories, an all-time record for any Texas college or university at the time. The Broncs finished fourth at the College World Series with a 2-2 record, and were selected as the top-ranked team in the country at season’s end. Ogletree was named College Coach of the Year by The Sporting News along with the South Plains Professional Scouts Association. With a team full of talented, hard-working athletes, most of their success could be attributed to the coaching methods that Ogletree brought to the field everyday. The strategy paid off as the Broncs would lead the nation in fielding that season. “I made sure the team was fundamentally-sound. We were skilled because we worked on the basics everyday in practice. I also made sure we covered everything that might happen in a game. We examined every game situation, and how we were going to tackle it,” said Ogletree. In those first seasons at the helm of the program, Ogletree instilled in his players the tradition of hard work and a winning attitude that would continue with him through his 29 years of coaching at Pan American. “I continued to wear the uniform number 44. Those 44 victories gave me a 100-32 record in those first three seasons at Pan American University,” stated Ogletree. During that memorable season, James Tyrone was named All-American for the second consecutive season by the NCAA, AACBC and Topps. He batted .349 with 55 stolen bases that season. Tyrone and teammate Mike Duffey were selected as honorable mention All-Americans by The Sporting News. After shattering all the attendance records that season, Pan American University went to work on the building of a new stadium to be ready for competition in 1974. The new stadium would have the seating capacity for 4,200 Bronc fans, and they would need it. In the seasons following the 1971 College World Series team, the Broncs baseball program would see many more successful seasons and award-winning athletes. Since 1971, the baseball program has seen 22 winning seasons and 11 NCAA qualifying squads. Even with all the success that followed, the 1971 campaign will forever go down as the greatest season in program history. 1971 DISTRICT VI (San Antonio, Texas) Pan American 1, Texas 0 Pan American 4, Texas 0 1971 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES (Omaha, Nebraska) Southern Illinois 5, Pan American 4 Pan American 8, Seton Hall 2 Pan American 1, Harvard 0 Southern Illinois 8, Pan American 6 (PAU finishes fourth of eight teams) Reggie Tredaway 38 2007 Baseball Media Guide College World Series INTRO COACHES PREVIEW PLAYERS OPPONENTS REVIEW HISTORY UTPA 39 www.utpabroncs.com INTRO COACHES PREVIEW PLAYERS OPPONENTS REVIEW HISTORY UTPA 1983 NCAA Regional Team 40 T he Pan American team had a slogan of “Teamwork, Pride, and Desire” that had elevated them into NCAA playoff seasons in 10 of the previous 13 sea- sons. Two of the three non-playoff seasons took place from 1981-82, and the 1983 campaign was a time to rebuild the Broncs back to the playoff success that they were accustomed. “After years of success, our pitching staff stumbled those past two years. We recruited some big, strong pitchers to put us back into the winning column again,” commented former head coach Al Ogletree. However, the road back wouldn’t be easy. In fact, it never was for the Broncs. As an Independent squad, the team would be forced to battle with some of the NCAA’s best baseball teams to even be considered for post-season play. “I had a feeling this team possessed the blend of experience, pitching, defense and hitting that would put us back among the elite in the Southwest,” said Ogletree. “Overall, it would be our pitching that would tell the tale. We had five returning pitchers and eight new players who would hold our program’s future in their hands.” The Broncs would collect three of their most impressive wins of the season just prior to playoffs. Wichita State University invited Pan American to come play after a cancellation from the University of Texas left them with an opening in their schedule. “They had offered to fly us out there and give us room and board to play them. They were ranked No. 1 in the nation and had the number one draft choice for the Major Leagues.” In the four games, Pan Am 1983 Team would take the series 3-1 beating Wichita State 19-9, 4-2, 12-5 before falling 10-4 in the final game. “If I remember correctly, we hit five home runs in the first game. Rafael Barbosa had two, Bobby Joe Williams, Michell Moran and Pat Marshell had one. After that, the hits just kept coming in the second and third games,” Ogletree recalled. The Broncs made their way to the NCAA Regional Playoffs in Austin, TX, where they rode the right arm of AllAmerican Jim Hickey en route to blanking Grambling State, 5-0, in the first game. In the second round, Pan American battled Northeastern Louisiana and made a dramatic comeback in the ninth inning to record a 9-8 victory. “Game Two was a special one. Northeast Louisiana hit three consecutive home runs in the top of the ninth inning with two outs to take the 8-6 lead. Barbosa, Luis Chavez and Gilbert Beason each clubbed home runs for us in the bottom of the ninth inning and we held came back to win, 9-8,” said Ogletree. What made the moment so incredible for Ogletree was the fact that it was the second time in one season that a situation like that had occurred. “Earlier in the season against Louisiana Tech, we were down 5-3 in the ninth with no outs. Gilbert Trevino, Williams and Moran hit successive home runs to win us the game, 65. After that game, I told them they had just seen something happen that they would probably never see again. The first thing they said to me as I got on the bus after the Northeastern Louisiana game was, ‘I thought you said we would never see that again,’” Olgetree added. After their dramatic win against Northeast Louisiana, the Broncs suffered their first loss of the regional playoffs against Mississippi State by a 7-5 decision. That Bulldogs’ squad consisted of two future MLB All-Stars in Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro. In the fourth round of the playoffs, the Broncs squared-off against a Texas Longhorn team that possessed four of the top pitchers in college baseball that season, including future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens. The Broncs fell short 61 and watched their season come to a close. That season, Pan American accumulated a 64-19-1 record, which remains one of the best teams that Ogletree claims to have every coached. At the conclusion of the season, Hickey was named first team All-American by the NCAA and AACBC, recording a 16-2 record on the mound with a 1.66 earned run average. He struck out 109 hitters while walking only 29 in 130.1 innings of action. Celebration Moran finished the season with a .320 batting average with 20 home runs, 12 doubles and 85 runs batted in. He racked up 162 total bases, scored 74 runs and stole 27 bases that season. As a team, the Broncs recorded a team batting average of .280 with 642 hits, including 82 home runs, 93 doubles and 15 triples. The unit scored 525 runs and totaled 1,011 total bases that season. The Broncs finished 19th in the nation that season, and several of the players have since continued to their career into the professional ranks. Following the end of his professional career, Hickey has since joined the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization as their pitching coach. The 1983 campaign will be mark in the history books as a cornerstone season in the Pan American history books. 2007 Baseball Media Guide Post-Season History 1975 SOUTH CENTRAL (at Austin, Texas) Record: 18-12 Texas 3, Pan American 0 Pan American 2, Texas 1 Texas 10, Pan American 6 (at Arlington, Texas) Record: 63-7 South Alabama 8, Pan American 7 Pan American 8, Louisiana Tech 1 Pan American 9, South Alabama 8 Texas 9, Pan American 2 INTRO 1968 DISTRICT VI (at Austin, Texas) Record: 32-12 Pan American 5, Arkansas State 0 Texas 3, Pan American 2 Texas 4, Pan American 3 1976 MIDWEST REGIONAL 1971 DISTRICT VI 1978 REGIONAL (at San Antonio, Texas) Record: 44-9 Pan American 1, Texas 0 Pan American 4, Texas 0 (at Arlington, Texas) Record: 52-17 Pan American 7, Louisiana Tech 0 Baylor 3, Pan American 2 Mississippi State 7, Pan American 5 (at Edinburg, Texas) Record: 53-19 Arizona 5, Pan America 0 Texas A&M 2, Pan American 1 1968 Bronc Team PREVIEW 1971 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES 1979 CENTRAL REGIONAL (at Austin, Texas) Record: 52-12 Texas 4, Pan American 2 Brigham Young 11, Pan American 5 198O REGIONAL 1972 DISTRICT VI 1973 DISTRICT VI 1974 DISTRICT VI (at Austin, Texas) Record: 64-19-1 Pan American 5, Grambling State 0 Pan American 9, NE Louisiana 8 Mississippi State 7, Pan American 5 Texas 6, Pan American 1 1986 REGIONAL 1980 Bronc Team (at Austin, Texas) Record: 42-19 Pepperdine 11, Pan American 0 Pan American 10, San Diego State 6 Texas 9, Pan American 5 HISTORY (at Arlington, Texas) Record: 50-11 Louisiana Tech 3, Pan American 2 Texas 7, Pan American 0 1983 REGIONAL REVIEW (at San Antonio, Texas) Record: 31-17 Texas 7, Pan American 1 Pan American 4, Arkansas 2 (10 inn.) Hickey was announced as the pitching coach for the Tampa Bay Devils Rays in November of 2006. During his time with the Astros, Hickey was a part of a squad that captured their first-ever National League Championship en route to advancing to the World Series where Houston eventually fell to the Chicago White Sox during the 2005 season. Hickey had the opportunity to coach a legendary pitching staff with a rotation that included future Hall of Famers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettite along with one of the top young hurlers in the game Roy Oswalt. Hickey was selected as a coach for the MLB All-Star Futures Game in Milwaukee during the summer of 2002 and was a part of the coaching staff for the Triple-A All-Star Game. Following the conclusion of the 2002 season, Hickey was selected as the Astros Player Development Man of the Year. Prior to joining the Astros, Hickey was a coach for the New Orleans Zephyrs – Houston’s Triple-A organization – where his pitching staff led the Pacific Coast League in earned run average for two consecutive seasons. In 2001, Hickey’s pitching staff led the Zephyrs to a Pacific Coast League Championship while posting the second-best ERA in the league. In 1998, New Orleans claimed the first-ever Triple-A World Series while the pitching staff posted 10 shutouts, which was second in the league. Hickey spent two seasons as the pitching coach in Jackson – Houston’s Double-A organization – where his staff led the Texas League with 939 strikeouts during the 1997 campaign. The former Bronc was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the 1983 draft and played eight seasons in the minor leagues with a trio of organizations – White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. His best season as a professional came in the 1984 season where he finished with a 13-5 record and a 1.81 ERA for Appleton, who claimed the Midwest League Championship. Hickey was named a first team AllAmerican following the 1983 campaign after finishing the season with a 16-2 record and a 1.66 ERA. He recorded 16 complete games during his final campaign, which set a program record, and was a main component for the Broncs’ school-record 64-win season. Perry HILL Florida Marlins • First Base / Infield Coach F ormer Broncs’ team captain, Perry Hill entered his 14th season as a coach in Major League Baseball, including his fifth season with the Florida Marlins. As infield coach, Hill helped guide the Marlins to their second-best fielding percentage in franchise history and fifth-best overall during the 2004 season. That season, Luis Castillo captured his second consecutive Gold Glove Award at second base. The prior season, Hill was a part of a Florida Marlins squad that captured the World Series Championship with a 4-2 series victory over the New York Yankees. En route to winning the World Series Championship, Hill guided two players – Castillo and Derrick Lee – to Gold Glove Honors and developed an infield that posted a fielding percent- age of .987, which included only 40 errors in 3,124 total chances. Prior to joining the Marlins, Hill spent a pair of season as the first base/infield coach for the Montreal Expos and made an immediate impact as the squad lowered its infield error total in each of his two seasons with the organization. During his tenure with Montreal, Hill guided the development of Orlando Cabrera, who led all National League shortstops in fielding percentage in 2001 while garnering his first Gold Glove Award. Before becoming a part of the National League, Hill spent the majority of his career in the American League, including three seasons with the Detroit Tigers. In his role with the squad, he coached third base/infield and watched as his 1997 team went from worst to first in fielding percentage in consecutive seasons. It was the first time in Major League Baseball that an infield accomplished that feat. Hill spent almost half of his coaching career in the Texas Rangers’ organization where he served as the first base coach for half a campaign during the 1995 season. In his 13 seasons with the Rangers, Hill oversaw their minor league development in the role of Coordinator of Minor League Instruction for six seasons. He also held coaching stints in Daytona Beach (Class-A) and Tri-Cities (Class-A). He was the Broncs’ leading hitter and co-captain for the ‘72 season, and that year, he led the team in Jody Ramsey eight statistical categories, including hitting (.346), games played (56), at-bats (185), runs scored (47), hits (64), triples (4), stolen bases (17) and walks. He also earned All-District VI honors in the NCAA Division I rankings. In 1973, the Bronc baseball program saw one of its most up-standing, and talented athletes career come to a close. Former head coach Al Ogletree claimed that the death of Ramsey was one of the most upsetting moments in his coaching career. “1973 turned out to be a dark time in my life, and in the history of Pan American baseball, with the death of one of the great men and students of Pan Am,” said Ogletree.” The tragic death of Ramsey on Feb. 24, 1973 has left its mark on the baseball program at UTPA, and his memory is still honored through the Memorial Award that is given to a senior baseball player each season. Ogletree started the award and considers it the top award given to any baseball player. The Memorial Award goes to the athlete who best exemplifies the standards set by Jody Ramsey, which they must show superior athletic ability, character, leadership and dedication to excellence on and off the field. Ramsey had taken up work on the construction of the new stadium being built for the baseball program in the summer of 1972. As one of the laborers, he spent many hours on the site of the ballpark and in an unfortunate turn of events was killed in an electrical accident before the stadium had reached completion. “Some of the other construction workers had once mentioned to Jody that they should name the stadium after him because he had worked so hard on it,” said Ogletree. After his death, the students petitioned to the then Pan American University Board of Regents to name the park in Ramsey’s memory. The recommendation was accepted unanimously, and in 1974, the Broncs would take the field to play their first season in the Jody Ramsey Memorial Stadium. Ramsey was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Ramsey of Freeport, Texas. The park was dedicated in his honor at ceremonies in 1974 conducted by Bobby Bragan, President of the Texas League and Dr. Ralph Schilling, President of Pan American University. The UTPA baseball program played in the Jody Ramsey Memorial Stadium from 1974-2000. The park was dismantled in 2003 to make way for an education building. While he was very impressive on the field, he was equally outstanding in his character and standards of living. He was twice elected president of the Pan American University Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. ..............1988-89 www.utpabroncs.com 67 Scholarships UTPA Baseball scholarship W hen head baseball coach Willie Gawlik first came to UTPA, there were a mere six scholarships that were given out to players on the team. Now the baseball organization has reached the NCAA Division I maximum of 11.7 scholarships that can be handed out to players on the squad through the Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament. The Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament is now in its fourth year, and every year it has been able to produce more money that goes directly to UTPA baseball scholar- were 75 participants, but a big draw has risen from the support and attendance of Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ pitching coach and former UTPA Bronc All-American Jim Hickey that helped raise the number of golfers to over 120. With every passing year, the Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament has gotten bigger and more eventful with a pre-tournament banquet with live auctions to the golf tournament to the posttournament dinner and festivities. In 2007, UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas, hosted a reception on the eve of the golf tournament where over 100 guests were present. The reception featured an auction that helped the baseball program raise over $14,000. For further information on the Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament, contact UTPA head baseball coach Willie Gawlik at (956) 381-2235. ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP COACHES INTRO 68 ships. Every year, nine scholarships are funded by the UTPA Department of Intercollegiate in addition to the money raised through the Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament. The Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament was originally started because the Broncs were not a fully-funded program so the UTPA coaching staff took it upon themselves to find a way to increase the revenue for their program. The idea of having a golf tournament to help raise funding for the program arose, and as a result, a committee was formed that meets routinely throughout an eightmonth period to discuss and plan for the following year’s tournament. In the first year of the Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament, there TOMMY SANDOVAL PREVIEW PLAYERS OPPONENTS REVIEW HISTORY Golf Tournament T ommy Sandoval Jr. was a standout pitcher for the Pan American College Broncs from 1967-70 where he recorded an 8-0 record to go along with a 1.45 earned run average during his final campaign on the mound. After his senior season, Sandoval was honored as both the Outstanding Male Student-Athlete of the Year and recipient of the Lou Hassel Award. Upon his departure from Pan American College, Sandoval was ranked as one of the top hurlers in program history and signed professionally with Reynosa of the Mexican Baseball League. A former teammate of UTPA head baseball coach Willie Gawlik, the Tommy Sandoval Jr. Endowment Scholarship was established in May of 2004 with the help of Sandoval’s widow, Mary, as well as the UTPA Office of Development and several prominent members of the Rio Grande Valley Community. All proceeds from the Tommy Sandoval Jr. Endowment Scholarship go to the UTPA baseball program.
