R
ichmond is a city of monuments that
has become something of a monument
itself to America’s New South, where
historic buildings and world-class
museums nestle next to new structures
designed to harmonize with the past even as they
define the future. Once the Capital of the
Confederacy, Richmond quickly shifted its focus
and today hosts eight Fortune 500 companies.
Located on the James River fall line, Richmond was
founded in 1607 by Christopher Newport and Captain John
Smith of Jamestown fame. Patrick Henry lit the fires of
revolution when he delivered his “…give me liberty or give me
death…” speech at St. John’s Church in 1775.
Richmond replaced Williamsburg as capital of the
Commonwealth of Virginia in 1780, partly for reasons of
wartime necessity and also due to advocates, such as
Thomas Jefferson who wanted the capital to be more centrally
located within the state. The State Capitol building was
thriving commercial center with its own share of millionaires.

Virginia Historical Society, which covers Virginia’s
history from Native America to the present day.
Richmond’s first shopping center is still a
bustling Mecca of consumerism. Cary Court, in
the Carytown area, first opened in 1938. The
Byrd Theater, a National Landmark, is an
excellent example of turn of the century opulence, and
Carytown’s unique shops and restaurants add charm and
activity. Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, once industrial
warehouses and factories, now sport fine dining and a worldclass furniture store.
The Kanawha Canal, located near downtown Richmond,
offers boat rides and tours, as well as walking paths from the
recreated turning basin up to Brown’s Island and Tredegar
Iron Works. The canal was instrumental to Richmond’s
industrial growth and connection to the West and featured
the nation’s first towpath transport system.
But there is more to Richmond than history. The Science
Museum of Virginia features hands-on exhibits on astronomy,
aerospace, computers and the IMAX Dome. Next door is the
Children’s Museum of Richmond, where ages 6 months to 12
years are invited to learn through touch and exploration. You
can also experience class 3 and 4 rapids running right
through the city, as well as nature trails strung along the
James River. The Greater Richmond Convention Center
opened in 2003, bringing new life to the downtown corridor.
Sports fans have a plethora of activities to choose from
depending on the season. Richmond hosts NASCAR every
spring and fall at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The
Atlanta Braves’ AAA affiliate, the Richmond Braves, play their
home games at the Diamond. Hockey fans can watch the
Richmond RiverDogs compete in the Richmond Coliseum,
nicknamed “The Freezer” during game nights. Also, the
University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University
offer numerous athletic events on the collegiate level.
Richmond’s 400 years of history offers many choices to
everyone. From the river to the many cultural attractions,
Richmond is truly a monument to itself.
The Richmond region is home to 860,000 people, 43
percent of whom are between the ages of 20 and 44.

DR. WILLIAM E. COOPER, PRESIDENT
On May 9, 1998, the Board of Trustees
elected Dr. William E. Cooper eighth president of
the University of Richmond. Founded in 1830,
the University of Richmond is the second oldest
private university in Virginia. In the 2004-2005
school year, the institution will mark it 175th
anniversary. Richmond is highly selective with a
rising national and international profile.
The institution is consistently ranked one
of the nation’s top universities by U.S. News &
World Report and other college guides. The
University is noted for its challenging academic
programs, excellent facilities, commitment to undergraduate education,
and strong resource base. During Dr. Cooper’s tenure, the University has
created and begun implementing an ambitious 10-year strategic plan and
a comprehensive campus master plan. Both provide inspiring direction
and a strong sense of momentum for the future.
Before joining the University of Richmond, Dr. Cooper served as
executive vice president for the Main Campus at Georgetown University,
where he additionally held an appointment as professor of linguistics. Prior
to that, he was dean of the faculty of the Liberal Arts and Sciences at
Tulane University and dean of Tulane’s College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences. At Tulane he was also professor of psychology.
Dr. Cooper is the author of books and numerous articles on brain
mechanisms involving speech perception and production. In addition, he has
published many essays on public policy and higher education and is a poet.
He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brown
University and a Ph.D. from M.I.T. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at
M.I.T., he served as a faculty member at Harvard before accepting
subsequent appointments at the University of Iowa, Tulane and
Georgetown.
Dr. Cooper and his wife, Dr. Clarissa S. Holmes, a nationally
recognized researcher in juvenile diabetes, are the parents of two
daughters.
JIM MILLER • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
University of Richmond athletics continues
to use bold strokes to attain prolific academic,
competitive and financial success as well as
provide first-class facilities for each varsity
program. The Spiders captured their second
consecutive Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Cup in
2003-04, awarded to the best overall athletic
department, and earned a program-record six
conference championships.
Jim Miller assumed the Athletic Director’s
position in March of 2000 and attributes the
department’s accomplishments during his first
four years to a sense of affiliation that has developed among the University
community. Coaches, University administrators, faculty & staff, studentathletes, alumni, corporate partners, and Spider Club members have
worked together to make Spider athletics extremely special. The idea is
simple: partnering is the key to the long-term success of Spider athletics.

At N.C. State, Jim helped increase the athletic department’s

with a $50 million capital campaign and helped create a corporate
marketing partnership that now grosses over $5 million annually.
Jim has been actively
involved in the competitive,
managerial, and financial
aspects of collegiate sports
for more than 30 years. He
played basketball and
baseball at Old Dominion
University and served as a

the 1974 men’s basketball
national championship
season for the Monarchs.

The 2004-05 University of Richmond men’s basketball guide has been
prepared for alumni and friends of the University of Richmond, and the media.
Requests for additional information, feature materials and photographs should be
made to the Richmond department of athletic public relations by all accredited
members of the media.
PRESS FACILITIES: Richmond’s press facilities are located at the west end of
the Robins Center. Admittance to the press room is by official credential only and is
strictly limited to members of the working media and UR athletics officials. A pregame meal is served 90 minutes before tip-off and is available through halftime.
Programs, media guides, statistics and game notes are available prior to the start
of each game. Complete team statistics, box scores and play-by-play will be
distributed to the media at half-time and at the end of the contest. A post-game
press conference will be held in the Interview Room adjacent to the press room
where both coaches and requested players will be available.
CREDENTIALS: All requests from accredited members of the media for
credentials should be directed to Simon Gray, Director of Athletic Public Relations,
on letterhead stationery, and received no later than 48 hours before gametime.
Children and other non-workers are not allowed in the press working area.
Credentials will be mailed if the request is received early enough to assure return
delivery. Otherwise, they will be left at the Robins Center’s media will call, located
outside the press room.
PHOTOGRAPHERS: All photographers and cameramen must wear a visible
credential issued by the Department of Athletic Public Relations. Photographers
and cameramen must work outside the restraining line at each end of the floor.
Photographers are not allowed to shoot in front of the benches or the statistics
table. In the interest of safety of the participants, it is requested that tripods not be
used on the floor.
PRESS PARKING: The press parking lot is located adjacent to the Robins
Center. If you need a parking pass, please be sure to inform the Department of
Athletic Public Relations when making your press credential request.

Requests for phone lines should be made well in advance of each game. The
basketball press row phone number is (804) 289-8806.
RADIO: Richmond’s radio facilities are located courtside with adequate space
available for visiting radio stations. Only one designated station for each visiting
school may broadcast, unless special arrangements are made. One line will be
installed for each visiting team to use. Any additional lines should be ordered

credit card or collect.
TELEVISION: Any delayed telecast originating from the Robins Center must
be with approval of the Department of Athletic Public Relations, and must be in
accordance with the Atlantic 10 Conference and NCAA guidelines. It is requested
that visiting television crews contact the Department of Public Relations with their
information, video tape and personnel requests at least two weeks before the date
of the game they are scheduled to televise.
INTERVIEW REQUESTS: All requests for coach or player interviews must be
made through the Athletic Public Relations office. It is suggested that at least one
day’s notice be given for an interview request. Players’ dormitory telephone
numbers will not be released and they will not be asked to miss classroom time to
do an interview.
MEN’S BASKETBALL TELECONFERENCE: Every Monday, the Atlantic 10 will
conduct a teleconference with each of its head men’s basketball coaches and one
selected women’s coach. Each coach will have a 10-minute slot to discuss their
team and answer questions from the media.
RADIO: This season marks the 20th consecutive year that Sports Radio AM-910
will serve as the flagship station for University of Richmond Basketball. Bob Black, a
voice synonymous with Richmond
athletics, will call the Spiders’ play-byplay for the 21st season. The quality of
Black’s work was recognized in 1998
and again in 2001 when he received
the prestigious “Broadcaster-of-theYear” award for the commonwealth of
Virginia. In March of 2001, Black
joined the athletic department staff
as the Director of Broadcast and
Internet Properties. In the position, he
oversees the department’s Web site,
www.RichmondSpiders.com. In
addition, Black is involved in all
aspects of managing and developing
Spider radio and television opportunities. Black will primarily be joined by UR Hall of
Famer Greg Beckwith. The program’s all-time steals and assists leader, Beckwith offers
insights into the game as the color analyst.
SPIDER RADIO NETWORK: The Spider Radio Network extends the scope of
