Helmkamp Auto Service M AY / J U N E N E W S L E T T E R Volume 8 Issue 3 “Old Enough To Fight, Old Enough To Vote” President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II lowered the minimum draft age from 21 to 18. Old enough to fight, old enough to vote became the popular slogan for the young voters asked to step up and defend their country. In 1943 Georgia became the first state to lower its voting age in state and local elections from 21 to 18. In 1954 this issue was brought up again by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in his State of the Union address, “For years our citizens between the ages of 18 and 21have, in time of peril, been summoned to fight for America. They should participate in the political process that produces this fateful summons.” In the late 1960’s with the United States involved in a long, expensive war in Vietnam young voting rights activists held marches and demonstrations to draw attention to Congress. They believed that a country who had the right to draft them and send them to war, a war many disagreed with, that they should have some rights in selecting the President that would send them into battle. In 1965 Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that contained a provision that lowered the voting age to 18 in federal, state and local elections. Though President Nixon signed the bill into law he issued a statement declaring that he believed the provision to be unconstitutional. On March 10,1971 the U.S. Senate voted unanimously in favor of the amendment followed by an overwhelming House vote on March 23. That sent Amendment 26 to the states for ratification and on June 30, Ohio was the last state to ratify the amendment thus sending the amendment to the desk of the President. On July 1, 1971 it was signed and made official. The Importance of Automotive Recalls The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there were close to 900 recalls affecting 51 million vehicles nationwide last year. However 25 percent of recalled vehicles on average go unrepaired each year. Recalls are a serious safety issue and should not be taken lightly. To help improve the response rate the National Highway Safety Administration has launched a new program this year called Safe Cars Save Lives that urges consumers to check for open recalls at least twice a year and to get vehicles repaired as soon as possible. The NHTSA suggests you visit their website (nhtsa.gov) and put in your vehicles identification number and search for any open recalls. Over time the blades dry out and wear down, making them less effective at clearing your windshield. It’s important to remember that effective wipers are a vital safety component. They should be considered important like tires and brakes. To determine if it’s time to replace them look for these signs: The blades are streaking, smearing or clicking when wiping the windshield. The wiper blades have uneven edges and missing pieces. Tearing or cracks are visible on the blades. Poor wiping performance may not mean it’s time to replace your blades. Thoroughly clean your windshield removing any build up or grime that has collected on your wiper blades first. Vinegar water is best at removing a film. Rubbing alcohol is a good way to remove any build up on your wiper blades. The ability to see clearly in inclement weather starts and stops with your windshield wipers. Camp Like A Pro Water pressure varies from campground to campground. Water pressure over 45 psi can cause serious damage to your camper’s water system. It’s always a good idea to install an inline water pressure regulator. Keeping several small pieces of plywood on hand will work great on stabilizers and tongue jacks if you happen to be sitting on soft ground. One suggestion while finishing up the last details before a trip is to spray the stabilizer jacks with a lubricant and also an ant and bug spray. This will allow easier use of the stabilizers and will stop ants from traveling up the stabilizers and into your camper. You never know when Mother Nature will kick up a strong wind so packing tie downs for your awning will help keep everything in place. It is never a good practice to leave the awning extended while away. One final suggestion when preparing to leave and after your black water tank has been dumped is to dump your cooler ice into your toilet. On the drive home it will swish back and forth acting as an abrasive during the trip to help clean the inside of your tank. Once home dump whatever is left in a 5 gallon bucket for disposal. This action also may help clean the level monitors. If your camper is equipped with a black flush kit, simply hook up the water hose and disregard this suggestion. Warm Weather Is Coming! How Cool Is you’re a/C? Remembering last summer and your A/C was not quit up to par? Now is the time to get that situation remedied. There are several things that could be causing this: Low refrigerant– For your system to work more efficiently it has to have the recommended amount of refrigerant. Dirty Condenser—The condenser is the heat exchanger mounted in front of the radiator. It cools the high pressure refrigerant vapor after it exits the compressor so it can condense into a liquid. If the condenser's air flow is blocked with contaminants little cooling will occur. Inoperative condenser cooling fan—The condenser often has it’s own separate electric cooling fan. This fan should come on and remain on when the A/C system is operating. If the fan motor, motor relay or wiring is defective the fan may not be working. Air or moisture contamination—For the refrigerant inside the system to do it’s job properly, it must not be contaminated with air or moisture. Air reduces the cooling efficiency of the system while moisture can freeze and form ice that causes blockages in orifice tubes and metering valves. Air and moisture contamination may be coming from unrepaired leaks in the system, or by failing to vacuum purge the system properly before recharging to O.E.M. specs. Blockages—Debris, such as rust and contaminants may clog up the orifice tube or metering valve that admits refrigerant into the evaporator. If this vital point becomes obstructed, the flow of refrigerant may be restricted and blocked causing a loss of cooling and possible compressor damage in systems that rely on oil circulating with the refrigerant for lubrication. Mechanical problems—These include metering valve failures, compressor wear, a compressor clutch that fails to engage, bad pressure switches and leaks It’s important to follow your scheduled maintenance in your owner’s manual. A little preventive maintenance can save a lot of money down the road. Just give us a call and we will be happy to schedule an appointment to make sure you are ready for that summer heat. Prevent Static Cling To keep your skirt or slacks from sticking to your tights or socks attach a small safety pin to waistband. The metal is a good conductor of electricity, so it will divert static away. From personal experience a paper clip will do the same.
