Maths
• Our reading texts will focusing on: mystery, quest and
adventures. We will be reading: The Paper Caper by Oliver
Jeffers, a variety of poems including shape poems and
calligrams . The genres the children will focus on are: mystery,
poetry and short stories.
Number: Fractions
Recognise and show equivalent fractions.
Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the
same denominators.
• Children will use a range of prepositions, conjunctions and
adverbials.
• Children can use appropriate language and structure to re-tell
narrative
• Children will use evidence from the text to explore character
and setting through drama
• Children will revise the three main types of sentence – simple,
compound and complex
• Children will participate in discussions about their reading.
• Children will be re-reading their writing and will make changes
to grammar and vocabulary.
• Children will re-read their writing to check it makes sense and
make revisions.
• Children will choose vocabulary to impact the reader.
• Children are able to make inferences and predictions based in
texts.

All the learning objectives in this half term
overview are subject to change depending on the
needs of the children. We want all Nelson
children to maximise their potential. Therefore,
learning is flexible in order to challenge and
support in the most effective way. If you have any
questions about how your child is learning,

Geometry: Property of Shapes
Identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make
a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a
complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or
less than a right angle.
Identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of
perpendicular and parallel lines.
Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling
materials.
Measurement
Measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths
(m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g); volume/capacity (l/ml).
Solve measurement problems.
Measure using the appropriate tools and units.
Statistics
Interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms
and tables.
Solve one-step and two-step questions (for example,
‘How many more?’ and ‘How many fewer?’) using
information presented in
scaled bar charts and pictograms and tables.
