Digital Disruption
Many technologies aspire to it, many creators search for it, many ideas lean
toward it, but few truly achieve the title, digital disruptor. Twitter, the worldwide
social networking site and media phenomenon, stormed onto the stage in 2006
and quickly established itself as a digital disruptor. Today, Twitter has created a
whole new form of communication, the tweet, which consists of a complex
combination of abbreviations, special characters, hashtags and shortened links.
Dr. Dom Sagolla helped create Twitter and recently wrote 140 Characters, which
aims to do for users what Strunk & White’s Elements of Style did for traditional
writing. By looking at the transformative effects Twitter has had on the world atlarge and specific industries, like insurance, we can better understand which new
technologies may yet disrupt our industry.

as we all know, change is hard. Which of your basic, fundamental processes
need disruption? How can insurers smoothly transition to new technologies?
What improvements and business opportunities will digital disruption open
up within your four walls? Side effects of living and doing business in the
“connected world” include adapting to alterations in productivity,
collaboration, employee recruitment and retention, and much more. Which

Digital Disruption Outside Your Enterprise
Insurance has long been accused of being behind the times in technology
adoption. That means consumers are being introduced to new technologies by
businesses in other industries. With the technology and service bar being set
ever higher by external factors, insurers can expect elevated levels of digital
disruption to “come home to roost” very soon. Which technologies will
disrupt your distribution channels, your relationships with partners and your
supply chain? How can you control digital disruption outside your enterprise,
or at least mitigate the risk of changes that occur as a result?

Digital Disruption for Your Customers
The difficult part of this discussion for the insurance industry is defining who
the customer is on both an internal and an external basis. The important part
to recognize, though, is that no matter who it is, the customer is not only
always right, but is ultimately in charge of how our industry goes forward.
Technology initiatives must be prioritized today by how much positive
business impact they will have, as well as by how much ease of doing
business and customer-centricity they will deliver. Digital disruption can
create better relationships with customers, and insurers are starting to pay
attention.
