At Sandylands we have developed a creative curriculum that prepares children for their future education and life. We have encompassed a range of skills and attributes that aim to encourage children to become active citizens that can have a positive influence on their communities. Basic Skills are central to all that we do as we believe that they provide the foundation for all learning and can enable children to achieve their full potential. We do this through: Planning 1. We plan initially from the National Curriculum to ensure we meet all statutory requirements. 2. A range of experiences that centre around the themes of Local/ National and Global awareness. These will deepen the children’s understanding of their world. 3. We integrate skills and attributes. These are displayed in each classroom through our learning lighthouse and Octopus. Children taking Ownership 1. Children contribute towards their curriculum by providing ideas on how we can meet the objectives. This is then displayed on our learning lighthouses. 2. We consult our elected pupil parliament on how we can deliver our curriculum. 3. We have a clear values system and children provide 5 clear objectives on the Sandylands 5 a day. 4. We have developed an APP that allows the children to give feedback during the lessons. Partnerships We have local partners that support the delivery of our curriculum. These include: 1. More Music Morecambe 2. Schools Sports partnership 3. Team theme – which provide specialised sports coaching. Providing Great Experiences/ Fostering a love of learning Every half term we have a whole school theme which engages every child in a learning focus which has clear aims and objective. Recently we have transformed the school into Tutankhamun’s tomb for a Great Discoveries theme. We have written a bucket list of great places and experiences that children should have by the time they leave Sandylands. Providing Intense Study We have developed study called ‘24hrs in’. The children will develop a range of skills through a specific focus.
