Orlando Invades North Charleston Sunday For Divisional Clash
The South Carolina Stingrays return home to the North Charleston
Coliseum to battle the Orlando Solar Bears for their first home game in
the month of February on Sunday afternoon. South Carolina finished their
most recent six-game road trip with a record of 2-4-0-0, while Orlando is
coming off two straight losses to divisional rival Greenville on Friday and
Saturday. The Stingrays sit in fourth place in the ECHL’s South Division
and will look to get even with the Solar Bears, who are two points ahead
with 55 coming into the matchup. Sunday’s meeting is the sixth of eight
between the two teams on the season, with South Carolina having won
two of the previous five. Orlando has one of the top offensive units in the
ECHL, scoring 3.73 goals per game.
Norfolk Takes Down Stingrays In Final Minute
A last minute goal by Frankie Simonelli with 5.2 seconds remaining gave
the Norfolk Admirals a 3-2 decision over the South Carolina Stingrays at
the Norfolk Scope on Friday night. Domenic Monardo and John Parker
each scored goals for the Stingrays, while goaltender Steven Summerhays
made a total of 31 saves in the defeat. Norfolk opened the scoring with a
goal in the first period by forward Ben Murphy to take a 1-0 lead. Monardo
tied the game at 1-1 for South Carolina in the second with his 6th goal
of the year from Andrew Cherniwchan and Joey Leach. The Admirals
re-took the lead and made it 2-1 at 11:27 of the second on a goal by Paul
Rodrigues. In the final minute of the frame Parker scored his 3rd goal
in as many games and evened the contest at 2-2 with just 36 seconds
left. Simonelli’s eighth of the year gave the Admirals the win in the final
moments of regulation.

Scouting The Solar Bears
Orlando has an overall record of 24-17-5-2 through 48 games,
including three wins over South Carolina in five meetings against
the Stingrays this season. The team made a coaching change
Nov. 14 after their most recent loss to the Rays, hiring Drake
Berehowsky as its new bench boss and has since found more
succes. Forward Denver Manderson is leading the team in scoring
with 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists) in 39 games, while Joe Perry
is tops on the squad with 25 goals. Patrick Watling has also had a
good season with 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists). Defenseman
Brenden Miller is first among active blueliners offensively with 20
points (seven goals, 13 assists) through 36 games. Goaltenders
Ryan Massa and Kasimir Kaskisuo have split time evenly between
the pipes, playing 24 and 26 games respectively. Massa has a
goals against average of 3.33 and a save percentage at .906, while
Kaskisuo has a GAA of 3.45 and an SVP at .897.

Cherniwchan Contributing
Forward Andrew Cherniwchan has been a big part of the Stingrays
offense as of late and has now scored points in three straight games
and six total points in his last five contests. The Hinton, Alta. native
scored in two straight games for South Carolina with tallies against
Adirondack on Tuesday and Reading on Thursday before adding an
assist on a goal by Domenic Monardo in the team’s most recent loss
to Norfolk on Friday night.

Parker Providing Offensive Help
After forwards Joe Devin and Steven McParland earned AHL call-ups
last week, Stingrays forward John Parker has moved into a bigger
role in the lineup and has provided some much needed offensive
help for South Carolina as of late. Parker has scored in three straight
games for the Stingrays including a power play goal on Tuesday
in Adirondack, the game-winning strike in the third period on
Thursday in Reading and a last-minute second period tally in Norfolk
on Friday. The Green Brook, N.J. native now has 19 points (10 goals,
nine assists) during his rookie season.

Stingrays History vs. Orlando
South Carolina has an overall all-time record of 26-8-4-4 vs. the Solar
Bears, having faced each other 42 times in the last five seasons.
Orlando has won three of the first five matchups. between the South
Division foes this season. The Stingrays have done well recently vs.
Orlando, and are now 6-3-0-1 in the last 10 contests between the
two. After Sunday’s clash, the teams meet twice more at the North
Charleston Coliseum on March 31 and April 2.
Monardo Making A Difference
Forward Domenic Monardo has been the hottest Stingrays’ forward
during the last two weeks and is currently riding a five-game
point streak with nine points on three goals and six assists during
the span. Monardo has goals in his last two games and has also
recorded at least three shots on game in each of his last seven
outings. The Oakville, Ont. native now has 21 points (six goals, 15
assists) in 32 games with South Carolina this year and has moved up
to fourth in scoring among active Stingrays players.

Overtime Heroes
With eight wins during 3-on-3 play, South Carolina has the most
overtime victories of any ECHL team. The Rays have done it with
eight different skaters scoring the winning goal and have at least
one OT win in each month of the year. Domenic Monardo had the
most recent strike on Friday, while other scores have come from Tim
McGauley (Jan. 28), John Parker (Jan. 22), Rob Flick (Dec. 27), Marcus
Perrier (Nov. 27), Joe Devin (Nov. 6), Kelly Zajac (Nov. 3) and Olivier
Archambault (Oct. 28).
Double Deuce Nearing Season-High Scoring Marks
Patrick Gaul, the longest tenured Stingrays player has 26 points
(seven goals, 19 assists) this season through 45 games. The fan
favorite is just five goals shy of his career-high of 12 and has now
matched his high mark in assists. All of his previous highs came
during the 2013-14 season when Gaul finished with 31 points. He is
now third in scoring this season among active Stingrays players.
Penalty Killing Prowess
Recently the Stingrays penalty kill has been among the best in the
ECHL and has moved up to sixth overall with a 84.5% killing rate
through 181 total times short-handed. The Rays have only been
short-handed 72 times at home this season, which is fourth-least in
the league. South Carolina did not allow a power play goal in five of
the six games during the team’s recent road trip.
Stingrays Snap Royals Win Streak With 5-4 Triumph
The South Carolina Stingrays prevailed 5-4 in a back-and-forth
contest with the Reading Royals in the teams’ only meeting of the
season on Thursday night at Santander Arena. SC forward Domenic
Monardo, a former member of the Royals, led the way for the Rays
with a goal and two assists while forward Tim McGauley had his first
two-goal game of his professional career and defenseman Wade Epp
picked up two assists. John Parker gave South Carolina the lead for
good at 10:21 of the third period with his ninth goal of the season.
The strike turned out to be the game-winner for the Stingrays and
came with assists by Patrick Gaul as well as Epp.
Late Goal Costs Stingrays In Adirondack
A late 5-on-3 power play goal by defenseman Stepan Falkovsky gave
the Adirondack Thunder a 3-2 win over the South Carolina Stingrays
at the Glens Falls Civic Center Tuesday night. The Stingrays’ offense
was provided by forwards Andrew Cherniwchan and John Parker,
each scoring goals for South Carolina in the game, while goaltender
Steven Summerhays made 24 saves in a losing effort. Falkovsky’s
winner was the only goal of the third period at 16:09 during a twoman advantage. Despite a late charge by South Carolina, the Rays
were unable to get a final look past Thunder goaltender Mason
McDonald, who finished the contest with 19 saves.
