Metals and non-metals - E

Name:
All solids can be classified as either metals or non-Metals.
The properties of metals and non-metals are:
Property:
Look and feel:
Weight:
Particles:
Metal:
Shiny (lustre of metal)
and hard.
Heavy
Dense, particles are
packed close together.
Conduction of electricity Conduct electricity and
and heat:
heat very well.
Malleability (flexibility):
Ductility (pliable):
Melting:
To be found:
Malleable, can be
shaped into different
shapes like flat sheets).
Ductile, can be made
into thin wire.
Most metals can be
heated to very high
temperatures before
melting or changing
shape.
Mined from the Earth.
Iron, aluminium,
stainless steel.
non-Metal:
Dull and brittle
Could be light or heavy.
Particles can be dense or
sparse.
Insulators, do not
conduct heat or
electricity.
Malleable or rigid, plastic
is malleable, but rock is
rigid.
Ductile or hard, plastic is
ductile, but rock is hard.
Most non-metals cannot
be heated to very high
temperatures before
melting or changing
shape.
Man-made, made from
animals or mined from
the Earth.
Plastic, rock, wood, wool,
materials for garments.
