Sociogram observation-Learner Guidelines
The Sociogram observation is used to track and record children’s interactions in the setting with
both children and adults.
You are required to carry out two Sociogram observations on your study child.
Carrying out the observation:
You should begin to observe the child when they enter the setting
The observation should record their interactions with both adults and children every thirty minutes
(for three to five minutes) throughout the session
Record brief details of the interaction:

Who – was the interaction with
-
Where – did it happen
-
What- was happening/said (brief scenario)
-
When –time of day
Remember to focus on the child in a positive light
Evaluating the observation:
Once you have completed the observation you will then look at and evaluate all of the information
that you have gathered. (Link to what Aistear has to say about communicating or perhaps Siolta
standard on Relationships)
This should include discussion on the following points:

The child’s interactions with others-( children and adults)

Any particular patterns that you might have noticed. For example, the child spends most of
the time talking with adults and little time with other children etc.

Are there any established friendships or emerging friendships that you have noticed?

Do most of the interactions occur when the child is in pairs, small groups, large group etc?

How the child interacts with others during play

Which dispositions are evident within the interactions

What impact does the environment/curriculum have on these interactions
