Practical Information
Accommodation
Please note that you must book your own student accommodation, as soon as possible, if you
have not already done so. Most international students live in furnished rooms at Kringsjå or
Sogn student villages. It is easy to get to the school by public transport. Please note that you
have to provide your own bedding. The easiest solution is to bring a sleeping bag for those who
are just staying a short time.
Follow the instructions here: www.sio.no/bolig
Click on “English”. Make sure you complete all the four steps.
Checking in to your accommodation
Please arrange to arrive during office hours Mon - Fri. If you arrive after 5 p.m. or at the
weekend the student housing reception will be closed. You will then have to stay in a hotel or
youth hostel http://eng.haraldsheim.no/
Travel Tickets
You should be entitled to student discount on the airport train or bus if you have proof of
student status with you, and if you are no more than 30 years of age.
For travel in the city you can buy a card with 8 tickets (flexikort), costing NOK 160. Each
flexi ticket is valid for travel on any bus, tram, ferry, metro or train in the city, within one hour
of being stamped by a conductor, or in one of the orange boxes you find at stations or on buses
and trams. Tickets and flexi cards can be bought from drivers or from ticket machines.
If you are going to use public transport every day, a monthly travel pass, costing NOK 400
with student discount, is probably the best offer. You can buy this pass from “Trafikanten”
under the clock tower in front of the main station, or at the university book shop at Blindern.
You must have proof of your student status in Oslo and two passport photos with you.
Transport from airport
Oslo Gardemoen Airport is some 50 km from the centre of Oslo, so taking a taxi is very
expensive and not recommended unless several people are travelling together.
It is best to take the airport express train (flytog) or bus (flybussen) to the main station, Oslo S.
Oslo Torp Airport is actually 110 km from Oslo! An express bus service runs from Torp to
Oslo.
The Metro/T-bane
When you have reached Oslo S, or the main bus station, follow the signs for the metro/T-bane
(a blue T in a circle).
Take the number 3 metro train heading west towards Sognsvann, if you have been given a
room at Kringsjå Student Town, which has its own housing office reception. The name of the
stop is Kringsjå.
For other student residencies (i.e. Sogn, Ullevål, Bjølsen, Bjerke etc) take number 3 or 5
metro trains heading west. Get off at “Blindern” to pick up your keys at the student housing
office in the administration building of the University of Oslo. The student housing office will
give you directions from there to where you have been given a room.
Getting to the Vet School
The school’s main buildings are situated at Adamstuen (see map). Trams number 17 + 18 run
right past the school, and buses 37, 25, 22 + 20 pass nearby.
To get from Kringsjå student village to the school you can take the metro, (T-bane), down to
“Forksningsparken” and change to tram number 17 or 18 (southbound). You can also take
busses 22 or 25 which drive down the road called Sognsveien. Get off at “Ullevålsykehus” for
the Vet School.
From Sogn student village you can either take one of these busses, or walk to the School
(approx.15 minutes).
Dept. of Academic Affairs & Research Administration
The Dept. of Academic Affairs& Research Administration, (Studieavdeling), is on the second
floor of the Main Building – see map of campus. Please come to this office at 8:00a.m., or as
soon as you can, on your first day at the School. The office will register you and arrange for
an email + IT connection and a student key card. We will also put you in touch with the student
association, (VSF), and student “mentors”, and take you to your first clinic/class.
Equipment
For those who will be working in clinics, please bring a small padlock (for your locker) and all
the clothing and equipment you would normally require for clinical practice at your home
university: white coat, name badge, overalls, protective shoes, thermometer, scissors,
stethoscope etc.
