WilsonWeb Mobile for Smartphones The H.W. Wilson Company has developed WilsonWeb Mobile for users of its databases. The need for this new interface, designed and streamlined for used with smartphones, is driven by a generation of users that are becoming more dependent upon small handheld devices for their communication needs. Although not a replacement for the traditional desktop version of WilsonWeb, it assists the information seeker as a means of retrieving relevant information when on the move, wherever they might be located. Users of the popular IPhone, Android, Blackberry phones and other devices, will be able to duplicate the quality search results they have come to expect from their WilsonWeb databases. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Library administrators will be able to easily turn off, or turn on (the default setting) this service for their patrons in the WilsonWeb Administrator’s Module. The “Configuration – Mobile Manager” page, is illustrated in Fig. 3, below. Fig. 3 Embedded Widgets This new Embedded Widget feature was requested by and designed for libraries that use the popular QuestionPoint (QWidget). We have reserved a place on our search results pages under the “Content Discovery Keys” area for this purpose. Libraries can embed other popular widgets, such as Meebome, and LibGuides, as well. Of course, there are many popular free widgets available, too. Widgets should be no larger than 185 pixels wide, for best results. There can be up to two (2) widgets on WilsonWeb. See Fig. 4. Fig. 4 The library’s system administrator can easily enter the name and the code for the widget on the “Controls – Embedded Widgets” page of the Administrator’s Module. Each User Class can have up to two widgets. See Fig. 5. Fig. 5 ReadSpeaker (Text‐to‐Speech) Customization ReadSpeaker (Text‐to‐Speech) was previously introduced to allow users to not only listen to HTML Full Text articles, but to save them it in MP3 format, for later listening. Now, users can highlight specific text that they wish to listen to. Plus, they now have the ability to determine how the highlighted text displays. Additionally, they can control the speed of the article they are listening to. Speed can be increased for those that use an electronic reader and slowed, for those for whom English might not be their primary language. See Fig. 6 for the new “Settings” provided in the dropdown window. Fib. 6 ReadSpeaker (Text‐to‐Speech) – Use of this feature is now in usage statistics. The use of the ReadSpeaker (Text‐to‐Speech) option will now be reflected in WilsonWeb’s “Standard” ICOLC Compliant Usage Statistics. Specifically, it will be included in the Session Usage Report. “My WilsonWeb” Parallel Account Turned On, or Off By Library The library administrator can now choose to activate (default setting) or deactivate the “My WilsonWeb” parallel account in the Administrator’s Module. This is a setting that can be found by first going to “Configurations” and then to “User Class Defaults.” See Fig. 9. Fig. 9 New Bibliographic History of Art Link A new “Bibliographic History of Art” link is now available in Art Full Text, Art Abstracts, Art Index and Art Index Retrospective databases. The link can be found on the search results pages, under the “Content Discovery Keys.” See Fig. 7. Its purpose is to point the user to additional research from a trusted site beyond WilsonWeb. See Fig. 8 Fig. 7 Fig. 8 Book Review Digest Plus database “Reviewing Journal” will now be in both the Advanced Search screen’s “as:” dropdown menu (Fig. 10), and in the Browse mode (Fig. 11) for the Book Review Digest Plus database. This will help researchers to focus on specific journals of interest. Fig. 10 Fig. 11 A new E‐Journal Icon Many WilsonWeb databases include E‐Journals that have been indexed in the databases and users will link out to the publisher’s site to see the full text of the article. To help researchers see and use these great links found within record citations, a new colorful icon has been added. See Fig. 12. Fig. 12 WilsonWeb’s COUNTER Release 3 Certified Usage Statistics & SUSHI COUNTER Release 3 As of July 15, 2010, WilsonWeb’s COUNTER Usage Statistics have been certified COUNTER‐compliant by an independent auditor, conforming to Release 3 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for Journals and Databases. The online COUNTER usage reports that are supplied by The H.W. Wilson Company to its customers, include the following: DB1 = Database Report 1: Total Searches and Sessions by Month and Database DB2 = Database Report 2: Turnaways by Month and Database DB3 = Database Report 3: Total Searches and Sessions by Month and Service JR1 = Journal Report 1: Number of Successful Full‐Text Article Requests by Month and Journal CR1 = Consortium Report 1: Number of Successful Full‐Text Journal Article or Book Chapter Requests by Month (XML only) CR2 = Consortium Report 2: Total Searches by Month and Database (XML only) SUSHI The Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative (SUSHI) Protocol standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.93‐ 2007) defines an automated request and response model for the harvesting of electronic resource usage data utilizing a Web services framework. It is intended to replace the time‐consuming user‐mediated collection of usage data reports. The protocol was designed to be both generalized and extensible, meaning it could be used to retrieve a variety of usage reports. An extension designed specifically to work with COUNTER reports is provided with the standard, as these are expected to be the most frequently retrieved usage reports.
