When a group of Anderson citizens accepted William Law Watkins’ $1 million challenge in 1999 to found a community foundation, there was great enthusiasm but also much uncertainty as to the outcome. The Board and the Foundation’s fi rst President, Tom Ervin, raised the required $4 million by establishing creative partnerships to satisfy the challenge. The Foundation was off and running just in time for the .com market downturn. We have since lived through (we hope!) the greatest recession since the Great Depression. During these challenging times, the Foundation’s managed funds have grown and, at the same time, our total charitable distributions have exceeded $12 million. Our goals have been to support nonprofits through targeted grants and endowment fund management and to promote philanthropy for individuals, families, and corporations through our varied taxadvantaged products. Th is year we helped our donors invest almost $595,000 in nonprofit organizations throughout our communities and beyond. We assisted by bringing clarity to their charitable goals, connecting them with community needs in their areas of interest, and providing oversight to ensure the greatest impact possible. These gifts and the gifts of time and talent given by members of our Board and our communities help the Foundation raise the profi le of philanthropy in our region and engage donors to support organizations that are important to them Robert M.
