Focus by Grade Band –
Grades K-2:
Hopscotching Through the Primary
Mathematics Curriculum
Hopscotch is a great summer game in which
a small object is tossed into numbered
spaces and is then retrieved by jumping or
hopping to the correct space. In our
summer math program, we are planning to
toss various ideas into our days’ work and
will then consider the correct MLS
Expectations to see how teaching in our
classrooms will be impacted. We will
delve into the Expanded Expectations to
build a deeper understanding of Missouri’s
standards. Ultimately, our work will be
developed to maintain a focus on number
sense, as this is a critical “space” in the
elementary math curriculum, but to also
hop through measurement, data, geometry,
place value and other areas of
interest. Games, activities, and information
will be abundant.
Grades 3-5:
An engaging, interactive series designed for
3rd-5th grade educators to deepen
mathematical content knowledge, enhance
pedagogical knowledge, and highlight the
development of mathematical practices. We
will dive deep into the Missouri Learning
Standards and analyze several strands. Join
us as we explore various concepts including
fraction operations, measurement, algebraic
thinking, modeling, number sense, fluency,
and more! Engaging activities, effective
strategies, useful resources, and motivating
techniques are just a few of the valuable
resources you will obtain.
Grades 6-8:
Proportional reasoning has been called a
pivotal concept described as the “capstone
of children’s elementary school arithmetic
and the cornerstone of all that is to follow”
(Lesh, Post, & Behr, 1988, p. 94). In this
series, we will examine how this important
concept is woven through the domains of
number, algebra, and geometry, and is
involved in many aspects of problemsolving. We will engage participants in rich
mathematical tasks that challenge student
thinking and support the student journey
towards becoming a confident proportional
reasoner.
Grades 9-12:
The grades 9-12 workshop will focus on
experiences that help students develop
conceptual understanding while meeting
the most difficult expectations of the new
Missouri Learning Standards, specifically
for Algebra 1 and 2.
Each of the sites will host 2 full day sessions
with domain specific instruction given in 4
grade bands: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12
Content written and presented by teams
of leading Missouri educators with
extensive, rich backgrounds in mathematics,
curriculum, and state assessment. Each
session filled with activities directly tied to
the Missouri Learning Standards.
