Ms. Ridley ELA Grade 8 Class Memo Week of March 9-14 This Weeks Learning Targets This week we will be focusing on completing our literary analysis and argumentative essays to prepare for PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers). Throughout the week, we will also continue with the module lesson on choices and begin reading the new text “Nothing But The Truth”. We will also focus on building our vocabulary using Rev it Up and the vocabulary from the text. Remember our essential question is “How do relationships affect an individual?” Standards Focus CCSS. ELA –LITERACY.RI.8.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. CCSS. ELA –LITERACY.RI.8.2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text. CCSS. ELA –LITERACY.RI.8.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain specific words and phrases in a text relevant to grade 8 topics or subject area. These standards will be the learning targets for daily homework and class-work every week. You will also have homework from Rev it up! Lesson 2 and vocabulary from the class text: “Nothing But The Truth”. These words will appear on class assessments as well as the PARCC. Homework Monday Read the article titled “Coming home to carry Cleveland Cavs to their first NBA championship”. Annotate the text as you are reading. On a separate sheet of paper: 1. Identify the main idea 2. Identify two supporting details that support the main idea. 3. Cite two facts from the text that support the main ideas. In your notebooks complete the definitions for Rev it Up! Lesson 2. On Tuesday, in class you will be required to create a foldable with the vocabulary words and the definitions in your own words. Tuesday Re-read the article titled “Coming home to carry Cleveland Cavs to their first NBA championship”. 1. Create a summary (two paragraphs) for the article on the same sheet of paper from Monday’s homework. 2. Explain how this article is connected to our essential question. (One paragraph). Cite evidence from the text that supports your answer. Wednesday 1. Develop 5 questions from the article on the same paper that you utilized on Monday and Tuesday night’s homework. 2. You are also required to answer the questions. Create sentences for the Rev it Up! vocabulary words from lesson 2. Thursday Respond to the following questions using the article “Coming home to carry Cleveland Cavs to their first NBA championship”. Write the questions on your paper. 1. What can you cite to defend the actions of Lebron James? 2. What choice would you have made if you were Lebron James? 3. What is your opinion of the article?
