The Higher Learning Commission approved the Schoolcraft College Alternative Route Teacher Certification (ARC) program, which will launch in May. Schoolcraft is the first and only community college in the state to offer an ARC program. ARC allows candidates holding a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and at least a 3.0 post-secondary GPA to pursue an accelerated path to teaching certification at either the elementary or secondary level. Prospective students must also take and pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification Basic Skills test, as well as a subject-area test for the grade level and content area they wish to teach. In addition, those admitted to the ARC program will be recommended for their Interim Teaching Certificate, allowing them to be employed in a secondary or elementary classroom while completing the program at Thank you for your ongoing support. It’s a great way for students to deepen their knowledge base regarding course content, while earning money and helping others to succeed. It enhances their transferability to universities. Many universities hire our Writing Fellows, tutors, and PALs (hybrid of Supplemental Instruction) because they are all CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certified. This means that they have received rigorous training. However, the LAC won’t hire students for these positions without your recommendations. What has eight syllables and supports student success? See answer below. by Charlotte O’Connor Though the title may sound complicated, the job function is easy to understand: A faculty facilitator works with students to improve learning. As a faculty facilitator, I assist students with any learning difficulties that could impede academic success. If the eight-syllable title is too much to remember, just think of me as a Learning Specialist—that’s only five syllables! Specific areas in which I provide help include: • time management • textbook reading • study strategies • note taking • test preparation and test taking • strategies to minimize test anxiety In addition, I work extensively with students preparing for entrance exams such as TEAS (for nursing school) and MTTC Professional Readiness (for education school). When you encounter students who are struggling academically – or even those who want to take their academic game up a notch – please encourage them to contact the LAC for an appointment with me. If you’d like me to visit your classroom to discuss my services, please contact me at extension 5297 or [email protected]. Let’s all work together to make Winter 2015 an academic success! First-Year Student Mentoring Program by Charlotte O’Connor The First-Year Student Mentoring Program (FYMP) is up and running! FYMP pairs first-year students with staff or faculty mentors. Research supports that mentoring provides a unique opportunity for students to feel more engaged and to experience a Introducing smooth transition from high school to college. (Levine and Nidiffer 1996). Schoolcraft’s faculty/staff response to this program has been very positive. However, we have met with challenges in student response to our invitations to participate. We are open to your suggestions as to strategies to encourage students to recognize the many benefits of the mentor/ mentee experience. Looking ahead, we are planning to offer a scholar- Ryan Lemasters No stranger to Schoolcraft College, Ryan Lemasters has joined the LSS staff as the Student Athlete Support System (SASS) Coordinator. In the past, Ryan has been a Schoolcraft College student, an athlete, and an assistant coach for the Men’s Soccer Team. This experience places him in a unique position to “hit the ground running” in his new role. As the SASS Coordinator, Ryan will assist student-athletes by providing strategies for academic success, including time management, study skills, and ways to balance the demands in the classroom with those on the court or playing field. He will work closely with both faculty and students to ensure that SASS continues to improve student success, retention, and athletic eligibility. Join us in wishing Ryan success in his new position. ship opportunity for FYMP participants in the next academic year. Details are still being worked out, but we hope the opportunity to win a scholarship will encourage greater student participation in FYMP. Please direct any students who you think may be good candidates for the FYMP to stop by my office (Room 131) in the Bradner Library or to contact me at [email protected] for more information. Librarians are Available to Help You Would you like to see more scholarly sources cited in your students’ research papers? Are your students over-relying on Google or Wikipedia for much of their research? We can work with your students to bring them back from the web (Google) to more scholarly sources by introducing them to books, e-books, library research databases, and more. This semester our theme is “Be our Guest.” Our staff and tutors are incorporating the Disney philosophy of working with the public to integrate additional customer service into our interactions with students and instructors. The Radcliff Learning Assistance Center focus is assisting students and faculty in achieving student success. One of our greatest resources is our tutors. Tutors work with a variety of students to complement their instructor’s curriculum, providing support for both the student and the teacher. They provide experience and knowledge-based information about the subjects they tutor, while also acting as a sounding board for students who are either struggling or simply need reassurance that they are indeed on the right track. The Radcliff LAC provides walk-in tutoring and/or tutoring by appointment. Our current subjects include: Biology, COMA, CIS, EMT, English, HIT, Psychology, Math to 119, and several others. Returning tutors include Alexander Williams, Rebecca Black, Marion Goff, Anthony Cerroni and Eric Schrenk. We welcome one new tutor, Elijah Grimm. The Radcliff LAC provides testing services. These services are available to instructors and students. Instructors may leave test(s) in the faculty room RC 160, in the RC LAC test box, or drop them off in our office at their convenience. Should a student miss a test, they must contact their instructor. If an instructor leaves a test in our office, the student is then welcome to come during our open hours to complete their test, which will then be returned or held for the instructor, according to test card instructions. We are currently doing our class visitations. The RC-LAC would be happy to assist any other instructors in beginning a cooperative arrangement with his/her class. We look forward to assisting you.
