Arbor Lights Winter 2013 A publication of creative writing & artwork featuring the talented students of Carden Arbor View School. The winter issue begins with a variety of colorful perspectives from the Sixth Grade. Yellow Yellow, embracing silliness, Like having a good laugh with your friends, Laughing and having a happy time. Yellow, sunny summer days, Like the first day of summer vacation when the weather is nice, As you play with your friends all day. Yellow, happy new days, Like the happiness of a golden retriever on a sunny day, Playing catch by the nice, cool pool. Yellow, visible and strong, Like the sunflower popping its head out from all the other flowers, Feeling ready for another day. by Carlos Cabrera Gray Gray, a rough tension Is like gravel rolling down a rocky mountain range, As fast as a cheetah running across a field. Gray, makes me feel as sly as a raccoon, Hunting for its prey, and for its meal, On top of the boulders, above a mountain’s peak. Gray, makes me feel fearless and brave, Like a gray wolf, hiding behind a log, And jumping out, to capture its kill/ Gray is like a mountain, high up in the air, Up in the sky, After a tough, long day. by Ronit Kathuria The Desert Tan, rough materials, Like the coarse ground sand, Blowing and flourishing in the scorching sun. Tan, shimmering hide, Like camels striding along with traders, Storing water to prevent dehydration. Tan, weaved container. Like baskets on camels back containing goods, Patiently waiting to be emptied and relieved of work. Tan, light deposits, Like huge dunes of enlightened sand, Slipping and sliding around its rim. by Alyssa Castro Blue Blue, sparkling majestically, Like a blue Prius on the freeway, Flowing down to the beautiful delta of fresh water. Blue, soft and cool, Like jumping into a pool, As you go in the chilly water touching and caressing your skin. Blue, clean water from the source, Like the first touch of water, As it flexibly moves through your fingers. Blue, dark, sometimes bright, Like a neon blue at cosmic golf arena, Electrifying beauty to your eyes, as if it is the first glimpse of blue. Picture and poem by Rainier Gracial 6th Grade Color Poems continued. Black Black, dim light, Like a cloak of darkness over the sky, Covering the weary travelers as they journey. Black, dark and cold, Like a chill running down your spine, As the sun hides and frigid terrain awaits. Black, impenetrable, Like a sad shadow cast over the earth, Except for the occasional star to break the darkness. Black, broken by dawn, Like a fresh new start to each day, Bring joy to all who travel the road. by Bridgid Corbin Blue Blue, cool and fresh, Like the rivers flowing down the mountains, On a hot summer day. Blue, wide and open, Like a clear sky, On a spring morning. Blue, caring and happy, Like my father’s eyes, When he is staring at me. Blue, warm and cozy, Like the heart of the fire, When I am camping. by Kourosh Ariani Green Green, the color of nature, Like white, its color stands out against many colors But only bright, light, and dark colors. Green, happy and comfy, Like a surprise bursting with joy and pleasure, Like a winter night in a house and a burning fire. Green, sometimes perplexing, Like making a puzzle and cannot find the piece, As your friend is talking to you. Green, normal and safe, Like a typical Monday morning, Like Christmas Day at your relatives’ house. by Matthew Draper White White, this amazing sight to behold, On top of the mountains, Like glistening gold shining in the midst of the night to uphold. White, calm and graceful, Landing on each little snowflake, Like a gazelle prancing on a long, large meadow. White, a large canvas, Draped over the rugged mountains, Like the tiresome road to Europe. White, strong and beautiful, Like the wind carrying the sand, Along the large, hot desert. by Alexandra Casillas Seasonal poems that delight the senses, written by the Third Grade Class. Jumping vs. Barrel Racing Feeling the wind against my face, moving in rhythm with my horse, counting the strides until we defy gravity for a few blissful seconds; 4…3...2…1. And we’re off. Galloping towards the jump, my heartbeat matches the pounding of the horse’s hooves. The adrenaline surges through me like a waterfall after a month of rain. As the jump comes closer into view, my hands grip the reins a little tighter, my grip becomes a little stronger, and all my doubts clear my mind. If I want to make this perfect, I need to think about nothing except for four words: I am not afraid. Then finally, what I’ve been waiting for: the five-foot jump. I must push out all my worries and fears. “I can do this, I can do this.” Then, we are sailing over the jump, landing, on to the next until we complete the course all too soon. Only one thing compares to the sensation of jumping and that is barrel racing. Preparing for the race is like getting ready for war. Splint boots? Check. Saddle? Check. Spurs? Check. Gloves? Check. All I need now is the adrenaline and it’ll be perfect. As my horse and I wait for the starting bell to sound, I pick up on his anxiety and he picks up on my nervousness. He is trotting in place he knows what’s going to happen, he is about to burst. Brinnnggg! And we’re off. For half a second, it seems like time has stopped. Then, we’re galloping toward the first barrel; we turn around the corner so fast. In a side view, it appears blurry. After recovering from the turn, we head towards the second barrel, this time, it seems even faster. Maybe it is because of the adrenaline. All I know, all I can think, is that we’re almost done. We recover from the second turn, gallop towards the third, round the last barrel and then we head home. We are flying down the arena so fast that we are just a blur to the audience. In both events, horse and rider are one. A team. I count on him and he counts on me. There is no way to compare them. But something is the same: The pure joy and adrenaline received from flying through the air and being one with the horse. by Emily Ferris, 8th Grade 12 Winter Winter is grand As grand as it was planned Winter is fun Not anything like a day in the sun You can play in the snow The snow is high up to your knees So the snow is not low So now you know That winter is grand by Josephine Burdekin, 3rd Grade Love Love is sweet Love is sweet Sweety Pie Sweety Pie Two or three Two or three Love for me Love for me by Ariana Lee, 3rd Grade If you would like to contribute to the spring edition of the Arbor Lights, please submit your poems, writings, and artwork to Mrs. Dinkelman.
