The River Nile
The River Nile is the longest
river in the world. It is 4,100
miles long and passes through
nine different countries until it
reaches the Mediterranean Sea.
Three smaller rivers join the River Nile. They are the Blue Nile,
the White Nile and the Atbara.
In Ancient Egypt before dams were built the River Nile would
flood between June and September. These floods would leave a
thick black layer of mud which were rich in nutrients and
excellent for growing crops.
The Ancient Egyptians also used the River Nile for fishing,
water and travelling up and down the river for trading.
The Ancient Egyptians and modern day Egyptians have built their
settlements, towns and cities near the River Nile.
Today the Egyptians control the flow of water from the River
Nile using the Aswan Dam which was opened in 1970.
