CourseGoals
Theprimarygoalofthiscourseistoestablishacoherentfoundationofknowledgeinbiology
andtopreparestudentsforcomprehensioninadvancedbiologycoursesandscienceingeneral.
Fundamentalconceptsdiscussedincludethescientificmethodsbywhichwecometoknow
thingsinscience,thechemicalcompositionandprocessesthatmakeupalllife,genetic
processesandthemeansofinheritanceoftraits,themechanismsandprocessesofnatural
selection,andadaptationandevolutionoflifeonEarth.Anadditionalcoursegoalistodevelop
criticalthinkingskillsfordevelopmentofreasonedthoughtandforevaluationoflifeexperiences.
CourseObjectives
Objectivesofthecoursewillbeachievedif,byitsconclusion,studentscan:
•Formscientifichypotheses,developtestablepredictions,anddesignexperimentstotest
hypotheses
•Understandtheimportanceofstatisticsinscientificsampling,discriminatebetween
descriptiveandinferentialstatisticsandcorrectlyidentifysituationsinwhichtheuseofeachis
appropriate,understandthemeaningofstatisticalsignificance,interpretstatisticresultsand
drawappropriateconclusionsfromthem
•Selecttheappropriatetypeofgraphtoillustratepatternsindatabasedonhypothesis
•Creategraphsthatdisplaydatainameaningfulwayandappropriatelylabeled
•InterpretdataanddrawconclusionsbasedonconceptslearnedinBSC2010andBSC2011
•Identifytheprimarystructuralelementsofvariousplantgroups,theirassociatedfunctions,
andexplaintheprocessesofplantgrowthandstructuraldevelopment
•Definesexualreproductionandexplainthegeneralreproductivelifecyclesofplantsand
animals
•Describethemajorpatternsanddevelopmentsintheevolutionofplantclades

GeneralEducationObjectivesforBiologicalSciences
Biologicalsciencecoursesprovideinstructioninthebasicconcepts,theoriesandtermsofthe
scientificmethodinthecontextofthelifesciences.Coursesfocusonmajorscientific
developmentsandtheirimpactsonsociety,scienceandtheenvironment,andtherelevant
processesthatgovernbiologicalsystems.Studentswillformulateempirically-testable
hypothesesderivedfromthestudyoflivingthings,applylogicalreasoningskillsthrough
scientificcriticismandargument,andapplytechniquesofdiscoveryandcriticalthinkingto
evaluateoutcomesofexperiments.
TheGeneralEducationobjectivesandtheassociatedStudentLearningOutcomesforBiological
Sciencesareachievedthroughinquiry-basedandactive-learningexercisesinthelaboratory,
includingprelabassignments,experimentaldesign,quizzes,oralpresentations,andcompletion
ofweeklylabnotesanddatasheets.Theseexercisesaredesignedtoreinforce,augment,and
accompanylearningobjectivesinthecompanionBSC2010lecturecourse.Inparticular,theBSC
2010Llabexposesstudentstothedevelopmentandtestingofspecifichypotheses,collection
andpresentationofbiologicaldata,andanalysisofstatisticalsignificance.
