History of Estacada
Estacada is a town of 2,700 located 18 miles SE of Oregon City and I-205. It is a rural
community on the Clackamas River and at the entrance to the Mt. Hood National
Forest.
The town was founded in 1905 as a camp for workers building Cazadero Dam—a
power plant to generate electricity for Portland street lights. Because the river was not
easily accessible by road, the Oregon Water Power Railway Co. constructed a rail line
which carried freight and construction crews for work on the dam. The rail line then
became an excursion line for city folks who picnicked at the riverside park and lodged at
the Estacada Hotel.
When paved roads reached the town and penetrated deeper into the woods, Estacada
became a mill town. Log trucks rumbled through town one after another in the 1950s
and 1960s with logs so big that three of them often made a load. In the boom times you
could smell and hear the saw mill day and night. If the mill shut down or the trucks
stopped rolling, it was Sunday.
Today the timber industry in the Estacada area is just a shadow of its former self. Now
the area today is better known for its wide variety of cultural events and outdoor
adventure. Local attractions include Eagle Fern Park with its old growth cedar and
Douglas-fir trees. Nearby is the Phillip Foster Farm, where pioneers on the Oregon Trail
first arrived to the Willamette Valley via the Barlow Road.
Estacada today has a new $3.55 million library, a thriving community of artists, and a
huge back yard—Mt. Hood National Forest.
Just up the Clackamas River from town are campgrounds, hiking trails, Bagby Hot
Springs, and the huckleberry fields of the high Cascades. Hunters, fishers, whitewater
rafters and kayakers also frequent the upper Clackamas.
Downstream from town, the river hosts steelhead anglers in winter and rafters in
summer.
