❑ MARTINEZ INKS NEW DEAL: On February 2, 2017, the Cardinals signed All-Star pitcher Carlos Martinez to a
five-year contract (2017-21) that includes club options for 2022 and 2023...last season, the right-hander paced
the Cardinals pitching staff in wins (16) and strikeouts (174) while making a career-high 31 starts with 195.1 innings
pitched...he also ranked among N.L. leaders in wins (5th), ERA (3.04, 9th), innings pitched (10th), quality starts
(20, 6th) and opponent’s batting average (.233, 12th).
❑ REYES OUT FOR SEASON: Cardinals young phenom pitcher Alex Reyes underwent Tommy John surgery on February 16 and will miss the entire 2017 season...the rookie pitcher was 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA in 46.0 innings in 2016
including a 3-0 record against the defending World Series champion Cubs.
❑ FLYING SOUTH: The Cardinals signed former Toronto Blue Jays left-handed pitcher Brett Cecil to a four-year
contract on November 21, locking in the southpaw through 2020...Cecil was a 2013 American League All-Star and
is one of only seven MLB pitchers with at least 40 wins and 10 saves since 2009...he has struck out 11.46 batters
per 9 IP since he because a full-time reliever Aug. 2, 2012.
❑ A WHOLE NEW WORLD: Ten players on the Cardinals Spring Training roster will participate in the 2017 World
Baseball Classic including five in the Opening Round at Marlins Park in Miami...the five local participants includes
Matt Carpenter (USA), Brett Cecil (USA), Rowan Wick (CAN), Carlos Martinez (DR) and Alberto Rosario (DR)...Corey
Baker (ISR), Yadier Molina (PR), Trey Nielsen (ITA), Seung-Hwan Oh (KOR) and Ryan Sherriff (ISR) will play at other
