Language Arts Overview
The purpose of the Saint Andrew’s Middle School English Program is to engage students in the love
of reading literature and the art of communicating themselves effectively both orally and in their
writing. We join NCTE’s (National Council of Teachers of English) vision of “’…teaching in the field
of writing and advocating writing as a central tool for learning, thinking, and communication.’ and
‘We honor the distinctive power of literature to reawaken the imagination as well as to ensure that
a multitude of voices and perspectives are heard.’” We encourage these important skills through
Grade 6
the use of a myriad of literature genres and writing styles, meeting students at their varied levels
and stretching and supporting them into deeper understanding and written analysis. Our ultimate
goal is to produce confident and competent students who analyze literature in an in-depth manner,
respecting its power, and students who think and write critically and apply what they learn in the
classroom to their daily lives as well as in the future as they prepare for high school and beyond.
