What is LIVESTRONG
at the YMCA?
Livestrong at the YMCA, a free 12-week fitness
program, helps a person shift the focus from
fighting cancer to regaining strength and
confidence and improving an overall sense of
well-being.

The program is open to all adult cancer
survivors and offers both one-on-one coaching
and the use of the Y facilities and group
exercise classes.
Participants are paired with YMCA-certified
Livestrong coaches, who tailor the program
to meet individual needs, whether it’s building
muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility
and endurance or improving confidence
and self-esteem. New exercises are added
gradually.
With the Livestrong program, survivors are
given the tools to continue their fitness
practice and the can go beyond the physical,
strengthening mental and emotional well-being
and establishing a supportive network of
friends.

HOW TO GET STARTED
• A LIVESTRONG at the YMCA professional will conduct an
interview to determine if the program will meet your needs,
and to get permission from your doctor.
ONCE ENROLLED
• During weekly meetings, certified YMCA health and
wellness instructors will give personal, individualized
instruction to the participants. The instructors are trained
in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, and
supportive cancer care. Participants, and their families,
will have full-access to the Y with a three-month
membership.
• The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA professional will develop a
plan based on the needs of the survivor that incorporates
cardiovascular exercise, resistance training, balance and
flexibility.
“
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA gives survivors a game plan
and guidelines on how to stretch muscles,
do safe cardio exercises and make lifestyle changes.
Cancer takes so much of your life away…
it zaps your strength, your freedom,
your independence. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
is a way to gain some of that back.
”

• Additional goals include reducing the severity of side
effects, managing unwanted weight changes and improving
energy levels. By focusing on the whole person and not the
disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move
beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.
