Business Challenge
Joshua Chisum, Director of Technology and
Communications at Midway Energy Services,
is a one-person IT department for a workforce
of more than 600 – a large percentage of
whom are mobile. Therefore, he relies on as
many automated technologies and solutions
as possible to give him visibility into endpoint
devices, networks, and storage arrays.
“Security for a mobile workforce is particularly important,
and extremely challenging, for oilfield service companies
such as ours. At any given time we have a large number
of employees working in the field at pipeline construction
sites and with customer representatives needing data
and paperwork, and they’re accessing mobile hot spots
and data,” Chisum explains. “It’s critical to ensure that
these employees are not introducing malware into our
corporate network through email or through the Internet.”
When a previous antivirus solution caused significant
performance issues with MES’ financial applications,
the company decided to migrate to Sophos Cloud.
Solution: Sophos Cloud
Sophos Cloud provides Chisum with a centralized
dashboard for monitoring and managing all
MES endpoints, including field-based laptops
and other windows-based mobile devices. The
system dynamically and continually scans
every endpoint and sends Chisum an automatic
email notification for every potential threat,
including potentially unwanted applications
(PUAs) that employees download to their
devices, either intentionally or unintentionally.

“By giving me the ability to centrally manage remote users
and devices, Sophos Cloud is indispensible to our overall
security posture. For instance, the PUA cleanup feature
of Sophos Cloud saves me numerous hours I would have
otherwise spent physically visiting affected machines and
then performing time-consuming scans,” Chisum remarks.
“Now, I simply access the Sophos Cloud console to get
a full update on all adware and other PUAs throughout
our environment, and I can clean them up instantly by
clicking a checkbox. At the same time, I have the option to
review and edit the policy, which is extremely powerful.”
Chisum adds, “Sophos Cloud gives us and our users the peace
of mind that they are still protected, even when using mobile
data plans. The dynamic scanning alerts me to anything
that’s potentially harmful. This gives me the opportunity
to call the users and stay well-informed regarding their
compliance with company policy as they use their devices.”
Although MES has no bring-your-own-device (BYOD)
policy, Chisum has implemented the Sophos Cloud user
device policy feature, which gives him better control
over users that attempt to access the company network
using their own devices. Deploying the policy feature also
saves Chisum time, where he would otherwise have to
create a server group policy to maintain control. “We are
increasingly having issues with personal devices accessing
company assets, and Sophos Cloud enables us to better
monitor and control who’s trying to connect and with
what. And, that is critical to our business,” he concludes.
