Kindergarten Mathematics Competencies Counting and Cardinality

Kindergarten Mathematics Competencies
Counting and Cardinality
Students will…
 identify numbers 1-20.
 write numbers 1-20.
 count numbers 1-20
 represent numbers 1-20.
 count to tell number of objects.
 identify quantity of objects in an array, circle or scatter without having to count
separately (subitize).
Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
Students will…
 compose numbers 11-19 into tens and ones by using objects or drawings.
 decompose numbers 11-19 into tens and ones by using objects or drawings.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Students will…
 understand that adding is putting together.
 understand that subtraction is taking apart.
 be fluent in adding and subtracting to five.
Measurement and Data
Students will…
 classify, describe and compare measurable attributes of objects in categories.
 compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common to see which object has
“more of/less of” the attribute.
Geometry
Students will…
 identify, describe, compare and create two-dimensional (flat) shapes.
 describe objects in environment using names of shapes and describe the relative positions
of those objects (above, below, next to, behind).
Mathematical Practices
Students will…
 students will begin to develop number sense to understand that when adding two numbers
together the answer can not be less than either one of the individual numbers being
added.
