Potassium Chloride Preparations
More information is available in the Trust’s Potassium Policy.
Concentrated Potassium Chloride solutions are not intended for general use and are only
stored in authorised areas - use ready-made potassium chloride preparation for parental
administration whenever possible. Concentrated potassium solutions are defined as
injections containing 0.4mmol/mL and treated as a controlled drug.
Key points:
 Potassium must be administered at an appropriate rate using a suitable infusion
pump.
 Only use the intravenous route when the oral route is inappropriate.
 Potassium must NOT be administered by bolus injection (except rarely in an acute
life-threatening condition administered by a doctor as very slow bolus).
 Wards unauthorised to use concentrated potassium must contact aseptics if they
require a bag of potassium that is not already available.

The usual maximum concentration of potassium that can be given via a peripheral
vein is 40mmol/L (60mmol/L can be given peripherally but is more likely to cause
pain and phlebitis).
The rate of administration should not normally exceed 10mmol/hr. ECG
monitoring is required if the rate of administration is greater than 20mmol/hr. This
is the same whether the patient has a peripheral or a central line.
