Coleman moved from Swainsboro, Georgia to Colquitt County, GA and purchased 483 acres of land for $900. He had determined that Colquitt County was well suited for farming and he was right! In 1893 Mr. Coleman completed the original part of the house, what is now the dining room and kitchen. In 1894 he married Elizabeth Temples of Bullock County, GA and immediately brought her to Colquitt County to live. In 1903 Mr. Coleman, his wife, and their 3-year-old daughter, Vista, moved into their newly completed addition. This beautiful home is framed with heart pine timber that was cut from Mr. Coleman’s land. He sold their home in 1906 to Mr. Thaddens H. Parker but it appears that Mr. Parker never lived in it. Apparently Mr. Parker purchased the home for investment purposes. In 1907, Mr. Alfred J. Greene bought the Coleman home. He and his family lived in this home and farmed the rich, fertile soil until 1916 when he sold it to the Ashburn-Murphy Co. After the Greene’s sold the home it had many occupants and owners. One noteworthy occupant was the Georgia State Patrol. It was used as one of three District Offices and a barracks for their officers and their families. It was also used as a boarding house for Colquitt County's schoolteacher's during the late 1900's and early 1920's. In 1976 Gene and Gwen Reid bought the home along with the remaining 10 acres of land. The home was now back in the ownership of a Greene. Mrs. Reid is the great-granddaughter of A.J. Greene who had purchased the home in 1907. Her father was actually born in this home. The Reid’s spent many hours and dollars returning this almost derelict house back into a livable home. They decorated the home to fit a lifestyle that was conducive to raising a family and also having a more modern feel than a Victorian would have had. During the Reid’s ownership the home was placed on the National and Georgia Historic Registers. The J.W. Coleman House, as it is known, is one of only two homes in Colquitt County to be placed on these registers. It was deemed worthy of such recognition because of its architectural style. It is considered Victorian Eclectic Carpenter style with both Queen Anne and Eastlake design elements. The turret, referred to as a gazebo, is unusual because it is an open porch rather an enclosed part of the house. The historic documentation by the National Register states, “The Coleman House is probably the most imposing and elaborate late Victorian house in Colquitt County, (in or out of Moultrie). It employs various Queen Anne details including a second story gazebo and colored glass. Its solid construction in pine is indicative of the importance of the lumber industry in the region“ The Reid’s lived in the J.W.Coleman House with their children until 2001. Once the children moved away, they decided to sell their home and enjoy a more leisurely lifestyle. In 2002 Jim and Linda Tuten purchased the Coleman House with the dream of returning it to its Victorian roots and into a Bed & Breakfast. This dream became reality in 2003. Your breakfast will be a full gourmet breakfast consisting of egg dishes, fruits and freshly baked breads and pastries.
