In 2004, hand drummer Marcus Santos from
Salvador city in Bahia, Brazil, began a new
concept in drumming.
Grooversity is the innovative and creative
drumming system that Marcus has developed
for education and entertainment purposes.
It promotes community outreach and social
change by targeting diversity awareness. This
multi-city percussion project is creating a
network of people.
Grooversity’s network includes people of
different ethnicities, ages, and races. It
portrays a positive message by engaging
communities to appreciate diversity, support
civil rights, encourage self-esteem, and most
importantly, enjoyment.
The Grooversity system is Marcus’ original drumming compositions based
on the traditional Afro Brazilian rhythms, which he has combined with a
world music perspective and a modern approach.
Grooversity is fun, interactive and inclusive. Every person and instrument
is equally important and essential for the ensemble. Some patterns are
intricate and challenging for the most experienced professional drummer,
and others are simpler yet equally important patterns for the amateur
player. In fact, the simplest patterns are the most important components of
the ensemble because they keep the other elements together.
Grooversity brings activism to an entertainment level and
has engaged communities worldwide in 22 cities in
Canada, France, Italy and USA.

Hello! Hello!
Thanks for reading my Brazilian Percussion Survivor kit. In this
package, you will find a few basic ensemble parts for two of the
most popular Afro Brazilian music styles. You can also find a few
examples of rhythms for Pandeiro, the most versatile hand held
drum in the world.
The idea of this material is to provide a MUST know to survive kit
for all Brazilian music players disregarding what instrument you
play. Here is a quick description of the instruments covered on this
package.
Timbau: Conically shaped hand drum made of wood or aluminum.
It has one plastic head tuned extremely high to produce a loud
bright sound.
Caixa (Snare drum in English): Cylindrical buzz sounding drum
played with two wood sticks.
Repinique or Repique is also cylindrically and tuned very high. In
Rio it is played with a bare hand and one short wood stick. In
Bahia, it is played with two plastic sticks. shaped drum with two
heads.
Surdos are large bass drums. There are usually three different
sizes of surdos. The tuning is done according to their size where
the biggest surdo is tuned the lowest.
Pandeiro is the Brazilian tambourine. Due to its wide array of
sounds, it is often compared to a drum kit. The Pandeiro is for
sure the most versatile instrument in the world.
Cajon is a wood box drum. It is not a traditional Brazilian
instrument but due to its versatility and compact size it can also be
used to play Brazilian rhythms.
This is it for now. Hope you get to use this material many times
over and over!

Samba Reggae
With roots in Samba, Caribbean and African Music
styles; Samba Reggae is a pretty new style from
Salvador, Bahia. Its’ origins are linked to civil rights
movements and nowadays is a very popular music
style around the world.
Samba Enredo
For sure the most popular Brazilian Drumming style
outside of Brazil. Samba Enredo is a fast tempo
samba style. Enredo means theme in Portuguese.
The name of this style refers to the Carnival
competition in Rio de Janeiro where each Samba
group has to choose a theme for their parade.
Pandeiro
Part of the frame drum family; the Pandeiro is a very
versatile drum with three very distinctive basic
sounds. Even though it is a small hand drum, the
Pandeiro can be compared to a drum set. The jingle
sound can simulate a hi hat, the open tones can
sound like a bass drum, and the slaps can be
compared to the sound of the snare drum. Therefore
you can have lots of fun applying drum set rhythms
to Pandeiro.
Samba and Baião on Cajon
In this lesson, the Cajon is played with a bare hand
and one brush stick on your dominant hand. The
brush technique is different for each rhythm. On the
Samba pattern, the brush will play the Teleco teco
pattern while the bare hand plays the same rhythm
of the Bass drum. On the Baião, the brush will
simulate a shaker pattern while the bare hand plays
a Bass and Snare drum rhythm.
