From the PowerSchool Portal choose ‘Parent/Students Login’. Enter your username and password. If you forget or lose your user name and/or password, please contact the school. Do not forget to logoff each time you have finished a PowerSchool session. This is done by clicking on Sign Out at the top of the window. If you have accessed PowerSchool in a public location (e.g. the library) you must also quit to end your session. Grades and Attendance Screen The Grades and Attendance Screen provides a quick snapshot of your student’s current schedule, teacher names, past two weeks of attendance, and current overall grades. Anytime you see something in blue, it means that it is a link to more information. Click once to see details of a particular grade or attendance total. ! Frequently Asked Questions: Do all teachers post grades and attendance? Yes. The PowerSchool pulls this information automatically from the data entered in the teacher’s gradebook. Grade and attendance information is available for viewing as soon as a teacher enters the information in the gradebook. How often can we expect attendance to be updated? Teachers are asked to record attendance each class period. Teachers whose schedules prohibit period-by-period recording input their attendance as soon as possible. Teachers may only enter attendance codes for Absent (U), Tardy (T) , Not Dress Out (H), or Late (L). All other codes, such as Excused (E) or Field Trip (F), are entered by the attendance clerk. The attendance office enters a wide range of attendance codes as they receive information from parents, the library, or other school locations where attendance is monitored. In some cases you may see a Z(Attendance Taken/Present) code. This is an internal code and does not indicate a problem with your child’s attendance. Class Score Detail click on any grade in blue on the Grades and Attendance screen to see details of student work. Note: If there is an assignment listed but there is no score - check the due date. This may be an assignment that has been listed to make parents aware of an upcoming due date. Attendance The legend for attendance codes is at the bottom of the Grades and Attendance screen Email Notification Screen Parents can request to have various types of information sent directly to their email account. Just check the boxes for the information you would like to receive, select how often you want to receive it (using the drop down list next to How often?) and enter your email address. Multiple email accounts may be listed. Simply separate the email addresses with a comma when typing them in the box. Note: Because grades may not change dramatically over a short period of time, “Once Every Two Weeks” is a good option for most parents. Click SUBMIT when you are finished. If you want to change your selections or edit an email address, simply go to this screen, make the necessary changes and click SUBMIT to activate the change. NOTE: Entering email address(es) here give permission for the school to contact you regarding your student and about certain school events. Please be sure that your email information is correct. Items to Consider When Viewing PowerSchool Information Understanding Teacher Procedures Each teacher has his/her own grading system. Some teachers work on a straight points system while others weight scores according to assignment categories (tests, quizzes, homework etc.). Some give grades for class participation while others do not accept late work. Teachers inform students at the beginning of the course as to what their expectations and grading scheme will be for the class. Grades can change dramatically in the first few weeks of each term. In the beginning of the term you may see dramatic shifts in the class average of your child. This is simply because when there are only one or two assignments in the grade book, a low or high score can make a significant change in the overall grade. Teachers need time to grade projects, assignments, and tests. Each day teachers are expected to have new material and lesson plans ready for class. Many teachers are also involved in cocurricular activities that take time to plan and attend. With that in mind, please understand that teachers need adequate time to grade assignments and enter grades in their gradebooks. For example, a teacher will not be able to post grades for an essay assignment the next day when they have 27 students in each of their 4-5 classes. In some cases, teachers will include the date they expect to complete grading and have grades posted in the assignment description. This can be viewed by clicking on the blue assignment name. Changes in your child’s grade may seem to occur very rapidly. The grade book instantly recalculates the overall grade based on every assignment entered. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have concerns. Teachers sometimes use codes in the gradebook to explain absences (AB), excused from assignment (EXC), not handed in (NHI) etc. If you do not understand a particular code, please contact the teacher. If You Have Questions or Concerns ... 1. Talk with your child first. Ask them what the situation is with their grades. 2. Ask for and read the grading philosophy of the teacher. This may answer the question of why the student has received the grade, or explain how the assignments add up to the current average. 3. Check to see if there is an assignment description. If the assignment is listed in blue on the Class Score Detail page, you can click on the assignment to see more information. 4. Check the assignment due date. An assignment handed in late may receive deductions from its score. And remember that overall grades can fluctuate dramatically because of lack of assignments entered in the gradebook, particularly early in the term. 5. Look to see if your student has any missing or late assignments that could be affecting their overall grade. 6. You may email a teacher at any time by clicking their name as listed on the student schedule on the Grades and Attendance screen. (This may require some additional configuration of your home computer and email account.) Frequently Asked Questions Who should I call if I have questions?
