One minute it is sunny, and then all of a sudden it starts to rain. Where did the rain
come from? Warm air rises into the sky. Rain droplets are made from warm air. When it
rises, it starts to cool down. The warm air holds these droplets together. To us, they look
like clouds. If the clouds are big enough and have enough water, they start to squeeze
together to make bigger droplets. When the droplets get too heavy, they fall to the
ground. The size of raindrops can be different. The biggest rain drops are only onefourth of an inch.
Raindrops fall between 7-18 miles per hour. If it is a windy and raining, then the
raindrops can fall much faster. If a lot of rain falls, then sometimes lakes and rivers get
full. Rivers that get too full can flood. Sometimes, there are weather reports that say
there is a flash flood. This means that the flood happened really fast. Usually, heavy
rains cause flash floods. Sometimes, the water in the streets is deep and fast. Rain falls
from the sky in different sizes and speeds.
12. Which of the following is the best main idea of the first paragraph?
A. how clouds with water will start to squeeze together
B. how warm air holds a lot of water and makes clouds
C. how rain is made and how it falls from the sky

The life of the Monarch butterfly is special. It begins as an egg. The eggs are laid on
milkweed plants. The egg hatches, and the caterpillar comes out. The baby caterpillar
eats a lot of milkweed. The caterpillar keeps growing. After two weeks, the caterpillar

around itself with silky thread. The caterpillar stays safe in its cocoon while it is
changing into a butterfly. After 10 days, the butterfly will come out of the cocoon. It is
able to fly away. It eats flowers and enjoys its very short life. Monarch butterflies only
live for two to six weeks. Before they die, they lay their eggs on a milkweed plant. Then,
the new caterpillars repeat the same steps.
Monarch butterflies are born four times during the year. In February and March, the
first set of butterflies comes out of the eggs. The second set of Monarch butterflies are
born in May and June. The third group will be born in July and August. All of these
Monarch butterflies will go through the same steps in life. They only live two to six
weeks after becoming a beautiful Monarch butterfly. The last group of butterflies born in
September and October are special. These Monarch butterflies fly to warm places like

their eggs. These eggs will hatch in February and March. The last group’s longer life

to America to claim land and live in colonies. A colony is an area where settlers from
another country live. A colony is owned by another country. European countries owned
the American colonies. Great Britain ruled the colonies that would become America.
The 13 red and white stripes on the American flag stand for these old 13 colonies.
Many colonists began to dislike their rulers. They did not like being taxed by the
British. There was an extra tax the colonists paid when they bought tea. The colonists
decided they did not want to be ruled by Great Britain. They started a revolution with
hopes of splitting away from Great Britain. That is when the colonists made their own

Cricket is a game that is popular in England, Australia, and India, as well as Canada.
Players on two teams use bats and balls to score points.
The game is played on a grassy field. Two “wickets” are set up across from each
other. A wicket is made of standing wooden poles with two sticks, called bails, lying on
top. A striker, also known as a batsman, stands in front of one of the wickets and holds
a flat bat. A bowler stands at the other wicket and throws the ball. The striker tries to hit
the ball.
If the striker misses, the ball could hit the wicket. If the bails fall off the wicket, then
the striker is “out.”
If the ball is hit, the striker runs to the opposite wicket. Strikers score runs by
reaching the wickets before fielders can knock down the bails.
