ANIMAL FARM JOURNAL ENTRIES
Journal Entry #1
After you have completed the left column on your
Animal Farm allegory chart, write a paragraph or
two in which you lay out what you think happened
in the Russian Revolution and Communist Russia.
Include all of the historical figures and at least
some of the historical events and groups. Write in
what you think is the correct chronology of events.
 As we read Animal Farm, you will be assigned
various writing activities. Keep these writing
activities in a running journal (just a collection of
papers). Your paragraph(s) about the Russian
Revolution and Communist Russia will be the
first entry, so label it ENTRY #1. Your Animal
Farm Journal will be collected at the completion
of the novel.

 Write a paragraph explaining why Old Major's
speech was so effective in convincing the
animals.
 What is his claim? How does he prove it?
 Use evidence from his speech to prove your point.
 Your elaboration should focus on the specific text
of each piece of evidence.
Journal Entry #3
Look at the song “Beasts of England.”
 What is the mood of the song?
 What are some of the images in the song?
 What promise does the song make to the
animals?
 Why do you think the animals liked the song
so much?
 Can you think of any revolutionary songs in
your culture?
Chapter 4:
Journal Entry #4
1. In this chapter, Orwell casts doubt on the
likelihood of a successful revolution.
Elaborate on how he does this.
2. Characterize Snowball as a leader. Do you
think his reaction to the stable-boy’s death is
the appropriate reaction to have during a
battle? Explain.
3. Where was Napoleon during the battle? How
does this characterize him as a leader?
Animal Farm Journal Entry #5
Identify three conflicts that happen in chapters 5-6.
i. What was the cause of the conflict?
ii. Who/what was involved in the conflict?
iii. What was the outcome of the conflict? If you do
not know the outcome at this time, fill this part in
once you have determined the outcome based on
your reading.

Utopia vs. Dystopia
Utopia
Dystopia




 Excessive control, repression,
Literally, Greek for “no place”
Ideal society
Paradise
The term was first coined by
Thomas Moore in his official
publication entitled “Utopia”
back in 1516. In his utopia, he
described an imaginary and
solitary island where
everything seems to be
running smoothly.
 Not realistic or practical
and abuse
 Unpleasant living and working
conditions for most people
 This description practically fits
into the idea of police states
where great power is used to
control the citizens.
 In this connection, the people
holding power become far more
advanced and progressive than
the rest, which also emphasizes
the distinct separation of
different classes
Journal Entry #7
In what ways was Animal Farm intended as a
utopia for animals? In what ways is it
becoming a dystopia? Elaborate in two wellorganized paragraphs that use evidence from
the text
Chapter 9: Journal Entry #8
Read the following passages from Chapter IX. For each
passage, explain the inferences and insights that you can
make that the characters cannot.

Meanwhile, life was hard. The winter was as cold as the last one had
been, and food was even shorter. Once again all the rations were
reduced, except those of the pigs and the dogs. A too rigid equality in
rations, Squealer explained, would have been contrary to the principles
of Animalism.
 In April, Animal Farm was proclaimed a Republic, and it became
necessary to elect a president. There was only one candidate, Napoleon,
who was elected unanimously. On the same day it was given out that
fresh documents had been discovered which revealed further details
about Snowball’s complicity with Jones. It now appeared that Snowball
had not, as the animals had previously imagined, merely attempted to
lose the Battle of the Cowshed by means of stratagem, but had been
openly fighting on Jones’ side.
Journal Entry #9
In a paragraph, explain how the single
remaining Commandment in Chapter 10
sums up the attitude of the pigs that
enables them to break all seven of the
commandments.
Journal #10
 Explain how the poem
“First They Came” and
its theme relate to the
events and theme of
the novel Animal Farm.
 How specifically would
the animals have
benefitted from
speaking out?
 When should they have
spoken out?
“First They Came”
By Martin Niemoller
First they came for the
Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade
unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade
unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.
