2 CATHOLIC CHRONICLE
Dear Parents and Friends of KCHS:
As we begin these summer months, it’s always appropriate that we reflect on our past
in preparation for the upcoming school year and our newest group of students – the
class of 2016. This year, KCHS celebrated her 80th year of serving the Knoxville area as
the cornerstone of Catholic education. As we look back on this past year, I have great
pride in our KCHS family and especially our seniors, the class of 2012 – what an
impressive group! Here is a snapshot of their many accomplishments during their
time here:
• 75 percent of our 146 graduates have been offered scholarships to college, totaling more than $9.5
•
•
•
•
•
million.
12 seniors were honored through the National Merit Scholarship Program as Semifinalists or
Commended Scholars.
Members of the class of 2012 have been accepted to colleges and universities, including: Virginia,
Stanford, Notre Dame, West Point, The Naval Academy and Xavier.
Countless hours of service to Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest, Catholic Charities, Schools for
Schools, Children’s Hospital and numerous other agencies that support those who are most needy.
Two Gatorade Players of the year for the state of Tennessee in Soccer (Tim Baker) and in Track
(Megan Ferowich).
The Class of 2012 exhibited tremendous leadership and were instrumental in enhancing school spirit.
This year, Knoxville Catholic also enjoyed a successful accreditation visit with the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS) in March that recognized the school’s strong commitment to providing a
genuine Catholic education. The SACS Visiting Team also recognized that our school’s faculty is among the
best of the best – certainly the backbone of our great school!
Much is happening on our campus in preparation for the 2012-2013 school year. We anticipate our
enrollment will exceed 700 students when we reopen our doors in August. Through the generous support of
our community, synthetic field turf is
being installed in Blaine Stadium which
will allow football, soccer and lacrosse
teams to have access to the very best in
practice and playing facilities.
Sincerely in Christ,
Dickie Sompayrac
by ProPhoto
On behalf of our faculty and staff, allow
me to extend a big thank you to our
parents, alumni and friends of KCHS.
Your prayers and support enable us to
enjoy a richness of blessings. It is my hope
that these summer months will provide
some much-needed relaxation and family
time to all of our KCHS families.

CATHOLIC CHRONICLE 3
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and she
penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity.
- HEBREWS 4:9-11
Dear KCHS Families:
As one year closes we take advantage of a change of pace to
prayerfully and peacefully prepare for a new year’s beginning.
The end of the 2011-2012 school heralds staffing changes:
• Senior Counselor, Ms. Katie King, leaves us to take a job in
China counseling American students abroad as they
explore college choices in the U.S.
•
•
•
Ms. Barrie Smith, Dean of Admissions and Freshman
Advisor (to name only a couple of hats she has worn here),
will be leaving us to rejoin family in Montana.
Ms. Kristie Hopwood (Sophomore Religion) and Ms. Alex
Nelson (Spanish 2) will be leaving to pursue new
opportunities.
Mr. Will Ramsay (Spanish) will be leaving us to head back
to school to earn a degree in English.
•
English teacher, Mrs. Mimi Coughlin, looks forward to her
retirement.
•
Finally, Mr. Jentry Tillman, Student Assistance Program
counselor, is leaving Knoxville for a counseling career in
the U.S. Air Force.
We wish these dedicated and unselfish individuals all the best
and we are pleased to announce a few new additions to our
staff!
• The Guidance Department welcomes two new School
Counselors: Dr. Karen Haas, who comes to us from
Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School in Florida, and
Mrs. Melinda Kirk, who has generously given of her time
over the past two years as an intern at KCHS.
• The Religion Department welcomes Ms. Grace Burnham,
who has recently graduated from Franciscan University in
Steubenville, Ohio.
•
•
•
Mrs. Susan Clifton, from Sacred Heart Cathedral School,
and Mr. Ben Wilkinson, a Wake Forest grad who has most
recently taught in the Johnson City area, will join us in the
English Department.
Ms. Amy Sheridan, a ’97 alumna, will be joining us as a
Spanish teacher.
Mr. Andrew Garland, a current UT lecturer in
Communication Studies, will join us to run our bookstore
and to take over various classroom duties.
The 2012-2013 school year will bring curriculum changes. The
Religion Department will teach a year-long course on Morality
and Catholic Social Teaching to Juniors and will teach semester
-long classes of Christian
Vocation and Morality to
seniors. This will enable the
department to continue to
present Morality and
Catholic Social Teaching to
juniors in school year 2013-2014 and to offer Christian
Vocation and Apologetics courses to seniors that same year. We
especially want our Seniors stepping out into the world to search
for the vocational call imprinted on their hearts in Baptism and
also to thoroughly know and defend their faith.
In order to more accurately reflect course content via its title, the
current freshman Writing and Research course will adopt the
new moniker of Grammar and Composition. Students have
shown encouraging interest in the Speech classes which will be,
once again, a valuable elective in our curriculum. Following
cutting edge trends, the Math Department has changed the
sequencing of courses from Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2
to Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. The sequencing change
will solidify the extensive algebraic skills used in geometry, will
give students a chance to develop the complex critical thinking
skills needed to more easily master geometric though processes,
will give students a fresher transition into geometry-laden PreCalculus courses, will lessen the review time needed between
Algebra courses, and will potentially enhance test scores on the
geometry-heavy ACT/SAT standardized tests.
The Science Department will be offering Ecology Honors this
year and will also offer a year-long course in Oceanography. A
semester-long Dual Enrollment course, EMR (Emergency
Medical Responder), will be offered through Roane State
Community College on the Hayfield Campus (off Parkside
Drive). The Fine Arts Department will up-the-ante on two of its
courses by giving Portfolio and Digital Photography Honors
designation. Two new courses round out the offerings in our
burgeoning Performing Arts realm: Beginning Chorus and
Theater 2.
For your planning purposes, please expect to see student
schedules activated on August 13, 2012. School Counselors
plan to be in their offices a week in advance to iron out last
minute scheduling conflicts. Students will receive locker
numbers and books on Registration Days (8/14 Grades 10-12
and 8/15 Grade 9).
May our eyes be ever open to God’s summer graces!

FAQs by Christina Eder
Knoxville Catholic’s Registrar answers some frequently asked questions received from
parents and students.
What do I do if my student is sick or will be tardy?
The student’s parent must call the 24-hour attendance line (560-0313 ext. 3550) before 9:00
a.m. to inform the school of tardiness or absence. The student is encouraged to check Renweb
and email each teacher for assignments or missed work.
Where do I find sports’ schedules, game times, directions to other schools,
summer camps, and coach contact information?
All information is listed on the athletics section of knoxvillecatholic.com.
Where can I get the specific dress code requirements?
Uniform guidelines are listed in the parent-student handbook (the complete handbook is posted on Renweb).
I just got my driver’s license. How do I get a student parking spot?
Parking pass forms can be downloaded from “Resource Documents” on Renweb. Submit the completed form to Mr. Branson in the
administrative office. The student can pick up their assigned parking space and sticker from Mr. Branson’s office approximately 1-2 days
after application is submitted.
If my student forgets something and I want to bring it to school, what do I do?
In an effort to build personal responsibility, KCHS administration asks that parents not bring forgotten lunches, homework, PE uniforms,
books, band instruments, and sports equipment to school.
How do I find out about service hour requirements and approved service projects?
Log onto knoxvillecatholic.com and click on the Faith and Service tab. You may also view the service requirements and projects on Renweb
and in the parent-student handbook. Upcoming service projects are read over the morning announcements.
