PUTTING EXPERIENCE AND
INNOVATION TO WORK FOR PEACE
We will draw on our decades of shared experience with our far-reaching network
of global leaders — in civil society and government, activist communities, science,
education, innovation, culture, and media — and link them powerfully to revolutionary
research findings in neuroscience and the behavioral sciences. We will build crosssectoral, out-of-the-box partnerships to deepen our understanding, improve practice
and measure effectiveness. Most important, we will contribute in new ways to reduce
violence, division, and promote more peaceful coexistence and healthier, more resilient
communities.
MESSAGE
FROM
TIM PHILLIPS
CO-CHAIR AND CEO,
BEYOND CONFLICT
A
s Beyond Conflict envisions the decade ahead, I find myself
pausing to look back at the journey that brought us to this
point. None of us ever imagined that in 1992 we were laying
the foundation for over two decades of work engaging in diverse global
partnerships in over 100 initiatives and convenings involving leaders
from more than 75 countries.
We are
reimagining
Beyond Conflict’s

Building New Frameworks For Peace — Our Roadmap To 2025
strategically launches Beyond Conflict into our third decade of
groundbreaking partnerships for peace and reconciliation. We draw
upon our many years of global engagement, trailblazing, and field building
to ask the provocative question — Is there something we are missing?
Our goals for 2025 are ambitious. But honestly, there is not a moment to lose — the
stakes are just too high.
Innovation | Neuroscience offers key tools that can be applied across disciplines
to better understand the human dynamics of conflict, shape improved approaches
to address conflict, repression, and difference — and measure their effectiveness.
Reach | We will amplify our reach by engaging and educating new audiences and
generations of leaders. By convening diverse groups and using online platforms to
educate, inspire, and engage, we will help leaders and divided communities open
minds and imagine the impossible.
Build For The Future | We will lay down the foundations to sustain and
scale our work for the future, and establish a center for innovation for leaders and
communities to come together, creating an environment in which perspectives can be
heard, alliances forged, new ideas generated, and peace building can take place.
Since our very beginning, our international partners have shown us the true meaning of
courage by engaging and being willing to consider the impossible — at transformative
moments in world history. Help us honor their courage and trust by working with us over
the coming decade to be nimble, creative, and focused. Let’s innovate together for peace.
I look forward to doing this work together with you.
With anticipation,
As we move forward to 2025, we are reimagining Beyond Conflict’s vision
and mission in exciting ways to develop innovative and transformative
frameworks for peace and reconciliation — applying cutting-edge science
to our decades of experience working with global leaders and communities
to address the problems of conflict, repression, and difference.

WHO WE ARE
S
VALUES
ince our founding in 1992, Beyond Conflict (then the Project
on Justice in Times of Transition) has worked with leaders
and diverse communities from around the world to build trust
between enemies and assist new leaders in the aftermath of dictatorship
in some of the most violent conflicts and repressive regimes in recent
times. Emphasizing the human dimension of conflict, Beyond Conflict
brings new powerful frameworks to create the path for progress in
peace talks, transitions to democracy, and national reconciliations.
We have worked extensively with communities seeking avenues for
peaceful engagement and constructive change, those moving from
conflict to peace or dictatorship to democracy. Our initiatives span more
than 25 countries around the world, including Northern Ireland, South
Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Central and South America, the Balkans,
and Central and Eastern Europe, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union.
INCLUSION &
RECOGNITION
Exclusion — and the threat that it
represents — underlies all conflict. To
be acknowledged, to be seen as we see
ourselves, is the ultimate foundation for
peace. It is only then that we can begin to
build community with others, embrace
difference, and engage meaningfully with
diverse communities
DIGNITY
The starting point of our work is the
recognition of the inherent dignity of
every human being. While respect is
both earned and given, dignity is core
and inviolable
HOPE
Because we know change is possible.
We have seen the power of human
resolve and courage bring change in
settings of unimaginable conflict,
repression, and difference
INTEGRITY,
CREATIVITY,
RIGOR &
PERSISTENCE
Change is not easy. It takes trust and
integrity, tireless determination, rigorous
preparation, a willingness to engage in
challenging conversations — and courage
to try things that have not been done
before. Change happens when we allow
ourselves to imagine something in a way
we’ve never imagined it before
We continue to innovate and engage new audiences. Our extensive
network of global leaders now includes multidisciplinary partners in the
sciences — new collaborations that seek to understand and apply findings
made possible through innovative technologies in neuroscience. We are:
harnessing sciencE to understand the underlying drivers of
bias, discrimination, empathy, and division
applying culture and media to engage and build a
community of thought leaders
informing policy and practice — to develop effective
approaches that help leaders and communities bridge the chasms that
divide us
The hallmark
of our work is
our integrity,
experience,
and the visionary,
innovative, and
pragmatic
approach we
bring to peace…
4
The hallmark of our work is our integrity, experience and the visionary,
innovative, and pragmatic approach we bring to peace and reconciliation.
We create new frameworks for peace, and, from our earliest beginnings,
have led the way in developing new approaches — catalyzing the field of
transitional justice, first to convene the leaders in Northern Ireland who
ultimately signed the Good Friday Peace Agreement, introducing the idea
of the truth commission in South Africa. We give tangible hope to deeply
divided societies around the globe.

PUTTING EXPERIENCE AND
INNOVATION TO WORK FOR PEACE
THEORY OF CHANGE
S
ince 1992, we have facilitated peaceful change and reconciliation
in some of the world’s most violent, intractable, and repressive
environments by applying new, powerful frameworks to create
the pathways that bridge divides.
We know change
is possible.
We have seen
the power of
human resolve
and courage
bring change
in settings of
unimaginable
conflict,
repression, and
difference...
6
We know that peaceful change and reconciliation with one’s bitter
enemies is possible — we have witnessed it time and time again. We
also know that such change isn’t easy and does not happen overnight.
Partnerships with leaders, governments, innovators, educators,
scientists, and others extend our reach and impact and give us access
to a community of ideas that inspire us to build and employ creative
pathways to address conflict and division. We work collaboratively to
motivate individuals and communities to imagine — and act upon — the
possibility of change.
WE BELIEVE
People learn from each other | Learning what is
possible from the transformative experience that others have had with
division, repression, and conflict provides powerful models for change |
Learning from respected role models and having one’s own deeply held
values acknowledged and expressed — being heard and seen — opens
minds, makes hope tangible, and gives leaders and communities the
courage to bridge divides and drive change forward
Change comes from a sense of agency and
hope | Trust and belief in the idea that change is both safe and
possible prepares and empowers people on all sides of a divide — giving
them ownership, responsibility, and agency to bring about peace and
reconciliation in their own communities
NEW FRAMEWORKS APPLY INNOVATIONS THAT
BRING POWERFUL IDEAS AND INSIGHTS TO
UNDERSTANDING, PRACTICE, AND POLICY |
Neuroscience research provides key evidence about what drives human
behavior and demonstrates scientifically that change is actually possible.
It offers new tools that shape and measure the effectiveness of peace and
reconciliation strategies | Culture and media offer new ways to connect and
experience the diverse perspectives of others — opening conversations,
building new, broader communities
