TAKEN FOR ‘GRANT’ – ED By Robert Turner Dodging the numerous hefty showers seemingly to have befallen much of August, 2006, a gathering from the Sawston Group enjoyed a relaxing few hours ‘gandering and gabbing’** around one of the area’s most charming rural beauty spots, that is the quaint village of Grantchester. We began by browsing in the small, ancient church, followed by a quick look, viewing some of the appealing thatched cottages adorning the village. We then proceeded slowly towards the lush meadows and the river Cam. Such peace and tranquillity complimented the warm, soft summer air. We completed the afternoon by visiting ‘The Orchard’ Tea Gardens, where we indulged in tea, coffee and home-made scones, served with thick clotted cream and jam. The afternoon had been a joy from start to finish. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Christine and Jim for everything. Robert. ** Naturally, Pauline, Margaret and I played only a small part in the ‘gabbing’. Christine. 3 IF YOU GO DOWN IN THE WOODS TODAY By Robert Turner The latter part of August 2006 saw a select party (of the more energetic) from Sawston undertake a day visit to the King’s forest, which is located in the village of West Stow, just outside Bury St. Edmunds. With all the dull and dreary weather August has presented this year, our luck was in as we picked a warm, dry day – ideal conditions for roaming through two miles or so of beautiful forestry. This particular forest is characterised by its plethora of pine trees. An atmosphere of extraordinary silence surrounded the forest, save for the distant echo of the cry of a fox. The group took the opportunity to pick, first sloes (for sloe gin), then blackberries (for the Sunday Lunch Club) and, finally, a wide variety of edible mushrooms (for two of us to enjoy later). The usual time to complete the circuit is 1 hour, but our group took a leisurely 2 hours. We then made our way a short distance to a small restaurant, which is just outside West Stow’s Anglo-Saxon Village, to relax and take refreshments. On our return leg home, we took a quick peek at Lady Barrere’s elegant residence at West Stow Hall, before venturing a short distance to the village of Icklingham to view one of its two churches. This is a rare thatched building which, remarkably, is no longer used for regular worship anymore. It is in the hands of a Conservation Trust, an organisation that cares for other, similar abandoned churches throughout Britain. The interior contained little furniture, apart from an old harmonium, and was laden with dust and numerous cobwebs. It is sad to see a piece of history in such a sorry looking state. Our experiences during this day were no less than fantastic. But, then again, they always are. Photograph in the King’s Forest taken by Luca Clarkson 4 Visit to Ely Cathedral On Thursday 21st September we had a lovely day trip to Ely. The weather was sunny and warm and we were able to go shopping at Ely market, visit the cathedral or walk by the river. I would like to thank everyone who made this outing possible. Katy Sprague King’s Forest, Suffolk Photographed by Luca Clarkson 5 LUNCH AT JEAN GURDONS – AUGUST 6TH Our thanks go to Jean for hosting regular lunches in her beautiful home in Whittlesford It was a very sunny day. We had lunch in the dining room where there were some lovely pictures and some people were in the conservatory. I had salad and and two bowls of strawberries and cream !! It was a pleasant afternoon in lovely surroundings and I had a very good time and enjoyed the treasure hunt. Ian Jennings We were served excellently with a lovely lunch “exquisite!” A great day out – everyone very friendly and what a lovely dog. I enjoyed sitting in the garden and taking part in the treasure hunt. Italia I sat and ate a really tasty lunch with Marjorie in lovely surroundings. I enjoyed chicken in sauce with salad and rice followed by blackberry and apple crumble. It was a very hot, sunny day and after lunch I went with Jenny and Sophie to see the Church in Whittlesford which we all enjoyed. Sylvia Murfitt My trip to Ely: The morning was beautifully warm and the sun was shining. We set off at 11.30am and arrived at Ely about mid-day. We went and had a light lunch at Steeplegate which was a treat for me. We then looked at the gift shop downstairs. I bought a few items and so did Louise. Steeplegate looks out onto the Cathedral and we took some photographs. We looked at quite a few shops before having a cup of tea at Costa Rica. The tea cups were as big as soup bowls. At about 3.15pm we went back to the coach which was waiting for us to take us home. I had a lovely day, all thanks to Louise and Cam-mind. Entertaining on behalf of Cam-mind Do you attend any meetings that invite people to speak to you? The great majority of groups seek speakers who are prepared to talk and entertain them for about an hour. I have been giving talks to all sorts of groups of people, retired groups, church groups, men or women groups, for many years and for the last two years I have been giving these talks in aid of Cam-mind. I have a number of different talks about different areas of London and am more than willing to travel up to about 20 miles from Cambridge for this purpose. Although I do not have a fixed fee in 2007 I am suggesting a minimum of £30 within Cambridge, £35 in the surrounding villages and £40 for the longer trips. Last year I raised over £400 and I would like to do even better this year. Please do pass on my name to any secretary whose task it is to find speakers. Many Thanks. Ken Drake Cambridge (01223) 564606. 7 Cambridge MDF BiPolar Self Help Group CAM-MIND AGM 2006 Thank you to everyone who came along on Thursday 19th October to our AGM. After the meeting we enjoyed a buffet with sandwiches, quiche, fruit and cakes and a glass of wine or fruit juice. Our friendly, supportive group is for people with bipolar disorder (manic depression) and their family and friends. To join us, call Phil on 0845 434 9780 or Email [email protected] Kevin’s Car Tips Mark Evans Story “The blues ain't nothin’ but a good man feeling bad” Jimmie Rodgers 1929 Windows - vinegar and newspaper gets them very clean. Plastic & chrome - just wash with a small drop of metholated spirit in clean water. Bodywork - if you get tar or any salt on the bodywork just spray on some WD40. Mr sheen is a lot cheaper than special car spray inside and out. Brings up plastic bumpers like new. Washing up liquid will bring up aluminium wheels like new. Wipe your windscreen wipers with metholated spirit to stop your windscreen from smearing. Like so many creative people Mark Evans’ life has been wounded by depression but he never stopped writing songs. In 2005 he took his first plane ride to Nashville Tennessee – where he recorded his debut album – I CRAWL OUT “It was the first place I’d ever been where I didn’t feel like a freak. Over there it’s just normal to sit around playing each other your latest songs” says Mark. Mark was offered a staff Writing Deal by a Nashville publisher – a big deal to a songwriter – and now writes exclusively for Hyland Hills Music (ASCAP). About his struggle with mental illness Mark says “I do find a lot of songs in that dark place, but sometimes it’s hard to pull yourself out again”. So, is this an album of wrist slitting dirges? Not exactly – here’s what Mark’s producer had to say “Some people have a knack for writing really good up-tempo, fun, novelty, stuff. Others have a knack for writing really good tear-jerker ballads. You, my friend, are equally adept at both – a truly rare quality,” Fett – Azalea Studios, Nashville. “A great time – a great guy!” – Gill Drake, Cam-mind - after going to one of Mark’s lunchtime gigs in Cambridge. Mark’s CD is £10 and if you would like to buy a copy he is donating £3 from every one sold through Cam-mind to our charity. Please contact me (Alison) at the office. Contact Mark on www.markevansmusic.co.uk I came today to Cam-mind and met someone new. Her name is Aly, nice to meet you. I hope your stay at Cam-mind will be a nice one too. I hope you stay for a long time before you have to go. But those that have been and gone were nice too. Kevin Brown 8 Sport for users of community mental health services Invigorate!
