Stickley returns seven starters who hit .330 or better from a 2008 team that went 22-12 and posted W&L’s sixth 20-win season since 2000. Also coming back, are the Generals’ top three innings-eaters from 2008. Senior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey headlines the returnees and is, according to Stickley, the team’s "best player." McKelvey, one of this season’s captains, was a First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-Region and VaSID First Team All-State selection a year ago. He led the Generals with a .407 batting average and also paced the Blue and White with five homeruns and a school record seven triples while playing a stellar centerfield. “Terrence is really going to lead us this year,” said Stickley. “Not only is he our best player, but he is one of our best leaders and, with so many new guys, we are going to need him. He can hit, he can run, he has got a big-league arm and he is a great kid as well." Joining McKelvey as this year’s captains are senior pitcher Brendan Clark and senior second baseman Byron Peyster. Clark, who was second the on team last season in both innings pitched (48.1) and wins (4) will look to anchor the rotation, while Peyster will likely return to his second base position. Peyster hit .344 with nine extra-base hits a season ago in making 25 starts among his 31 games played. “All three of my captains know what needs to be done and are eager to show the young guys the ropes,” Stickley noted. “They have all shown that they can be productive, and my hope is that they can teach the young guys while maintaining their own production.” Clark will be joined in the rotation by junior Chuck Davidson, giving W&L two formidable righties at the top. Davidson led the Generals with five wins and 57.0 innings pitched a season ago. Despite having his two workhorses back, Stickley pointed out that he is going to need to find some guys to fill the middle innings and to make mid-week starts. “With those two guys at the top and some solid relief guys coming back, if we can get some innings out of some of these new guys our pitching staff shapes up OK," he said. Look for W&L’s relief corps to include juniors Jim Plantholt and Nate Adkins, as well as sophomore transfer Gregg Laswell. Plantholt, who also plays third base, posted five saves last season, while Adkins made 15 appearances, including two starts, and posted a 3-0 record with a 4.50 ERA. Laswell, a transfer from the Air Force Academy, saw action in 12 games (2 starts) and posted a 1-1 record with 29 strikeouts in 32.2 innings of work for the Falcons last season. With the aforementioned returnees looking to make a majority of the weekend starts and see a bulk of the relief duty, expect a group of first-years to battle for mid-week starts and relief duty as needed. First-years Jody Davis, Pat Smith, Roger Strong and Drew Jacoby, among others, have an opportunity to step in and eat up some innings throughout the course of the season. Completing the battery will be junior catcher Will Lewis. Lewis, who was a First Team All-ODAC selection last season, hit .385 with 12 doubles and led the Generals with 40 RBI. 2 GENERALS BASEBALL “Will is getting better and better at calling a game and handling a staff,” remarked Stickley. “He is always going to hit, we’ll DH him on (his) days off to keep his bat in the lineup.” Looking to back-up Lewis and provide an occasional day off are a trio of first-years. Joe Gannett, Baxter Lewallen and Ben Thomas will vie for innings behind the plate and are all pretty comparable according to Stickley. Joining Peyster up the middle will be junior shortstop John Ditore. Ditore made 34 starts a year ago and hit .331 with eight doubles. “Ditore and Peyster are pretty solid for us up the middle,” said Stickley. “They can both swing the bat and have some experience. Also, they are pretty versatile and give us the luxury of moving them around if need be,” he concluded. In addition to his relief duties, Plantholt saw the majority of time at third base last season and hit .355. Several first-years will push Plantholt for playing time, including Alston James, Chas Straface and CJ Thompson. “Jimmy has played well for us,” Stickley remarked. “He’s got experience over there and he’s another one of our guys coming back that can swing the bat.” Across the diamond at first junior Hunter Serenbetz will look to duplicate the 2008 season in which he hit .364 with 12 doubles, three homeruns and 28 RBI en route to being named Honorable Mention All-ODAC. He will be backed up by senior Andrew Henderson and first-year Lee Tackett, among others. “He is a real good first baseman,” Stickley said of Serenbetz. “He does a lot of things well and is real solid for us.” Henderson is a bit of a wild card for Stickley as he is coming off of a knee injury that limited his 2008 season to just four at-bats. Henderson will also look to get some time on the mound after hurling just 14.0 innings a year ago. “If Henderson can come back from his knee injury, that is going to be huge for us,” pointed out Stickley. “If he is healthy and we can get him in the lineup and have him toss a few innings that could really help us a lot.” Besides the pitching staff, perhaps the biggest hole to fill from 2008 will be left field. Stickley will be looking to replace James Madden, his .346 average and team-leading 13 doubles. At this point, it may be any one of three first-years, among others. Mike Decembrino, Alston James and Brian Seliber are in the hunt for a corner outfield spot. “Right now I am not sure who is going to end up there,” noted Stickley. “We may even move Cardona to left and find someone to play right.” With McKelvey holding down center field, and a host of players in the mix at one corner outfield spot it will be sophomore Anthony Cardona in the other corner. Cardona hit .348 while making 32 starts in his debut campaign. He was one of three Generals to hit 12 doubles and his slugging percentage of .518 was good for fourth on the team. “With Cardona and McKelvey out there I am not really worried about the outfield,” said Stickley. “Both those guys can hit and they can really go get it, so I am not too worried about those guys,” he concluded. “With seven of our top hitters back from last season, our offense will be fine,” he noted. “We have got some good young guys and if they can develop for us and we can get some innings out of some of them we are going to be ok." 3 Washington and lee washington JEFF STICKLEY, HEAD COACH Jeff Stickley is in his 23rd season as head coach of the Washington and Lee baseball team. Stickley, who serves as the chairman of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball coaches committee, has led the W&L baseball program to 10-straight winning seasons and a 216-128-2 (.627) record since 1999. He is the winningest baseball coach in school history with 315 career victories (315-307-14). Stickley has guided the Generals to the ODAC Postseason Tournament each of the past six seasons and his teams have advanced to the ODAC Championship game twice during that span and three times overall. W&L has notched a new program record for victories three times in the past 10 seasons, culminating during the 2003 season when the Generals went 28-8 overall and advanced to the ODAC Championship game. His 2001 squad went 23-8 overall and his 1999 team posted a 21-12 record and reached the ODAC championship game. The three-time ODAC Coach of the Year (1996, 1999, 2003), Stickley also guided the Generals to a 27-13 mark and an appearance in the ODAC Tournament Semifinals in 2005. Stickley, his wife Daphne, and daughter Sarah Elizabeth, reside in Rockbridge County. 4 GENERALS BASEBALL BRIAN SMITH, ASSISTANT COACH Brian Smith is in his third year as an assistant baseball coach at Washington and Lee. Over his first two seasons, the Generals have produced a 40-26 overall record and a pair of berths to the ODAC Tournament. Smith arrived at W&L in the summer of 2006 after coaching one season at Maryville College in Tennessee. Prior to joining the Maryville staff, he spent two seasons as the graduate assistant at Defiance College, while also earning his master of arts in education. A graduate of Tiffin University with a bachelor's degree in business management, Smith was a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher for the Dragons. He was one of the team's relievers and made a few starts during his collegiate pitching career. GarretT LeRose, ASSISTANT COACH Garrett LeRose is in his first season as an assistant baseball coach with the Generals after serving as an assistant coach with the football team this past fall. A December 2007 W&L graduate with a degree in European history, LeRose was a four-year letterwinner for the Generals' football team, playing wide receiver, halfback and quarterback. He was a member of the 2006 ODAC Championship team, the first team in school history to advance to the Division III playoffs. Following his playing days, LeRose joined the Generals’ staff as a student assistant, working with both the running backs and the wide receivers. His duties included comprehensive film assessment and breakdown, as well as preparation of practice plans. 5 Washington and lee washington KEY RETURNEES BRENDAN CLARK Senior • P • 6-2 • 190 Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery Three-year letterwinner and a team captain ... appeared in 15 games with eight starts in 2008 ... posted a 4-2 record with a 3.91 ERA in 48.1 innings of work ... recorded 38 strikeouts and a team best .235 batting average against ... limited Southern Vermont to four hits and one walk, while striking out six over five innings in a 17-0 win (3/2) ... made 11 appearances on the mound as a sophomore ... registered a 3-0 record, along with a 4.91 ERA in 25.2 innings of work ... tallied 18 strikeouts ... pitched in 12 games as a first-year ... posted a 2-1 mark ... pitched four innings and allowed just two hits in a 11-6 win over Roanoke (3/31) ... totaled an ERA of 2.77 in 13.0 innings of action ... also threw nine strikeouts ... earned three letters in baseball as prep ... named team captain and MVP as a senior ... Christian Batcheller '00 was the first Washington and Lee baseball player taken in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft when he was selected in the 46th round of the 1999 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Batcheller was taken following his junior season and signed with the Pirates one week after being drafted. The outfielder played with the Pirates Class "A" teams in Bradenton, Fla., and Williamsport, Pa., before having his career cut short due to injury. He graduated from W&L holding 10 school records and won the ODAC triple crown as a freshman, batting .490 with nine home runs and 45 RBI. He was twice named First Team All-ODAC and earned First-Team All-South and All-State honors as a freshman and honorable mention All-South honors as a sophomore. Michael Hanson '03 became the second General in recent memory to play professional baseball when he signed a rookie free agent contract with the Atlanta Braves on June 6, 2003. Hanson was assigned to the Danville Braves of the Class "A" Appalachian League and found immediate success. He was named to the Appalachian League All-Star team in his first season and spent the 2004 campaign with the team's Class "A" affiliate in Rome, Ga. As a General, Hanson was a fourtime All-ODAC selection and was named ODAC Player of the Year as a senior when he earned Third Team All-America honors at shortstop. He graduated with a .360 career batting average and 11 school records, including career games played (136), career hits (187), career runs (148), career doubles (43), career triples (13) and career steals (51). Bryan Mulhern '04 signed a contract with the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League in the Spring of 2005 and later signed with the Houston Astros organization, spending the summer with the club's Class "A" teams in Troy, N.Y., and Greeneville, Tenn. As a General, Mulhern was a two-time First Team All-ODAC selection after batting .341 with 20 homeruns, 33 doubles and a school-record 130 RBI. A versatile player, Mulhern caught, played the outfield and pitched. On the mound, he went 9-4 with a 2.57 ERA, four saves, 70 strikeouts and just 20 walks. Mulhern ended his career as the school's all-time leader in game (8), season (48) and career RBI (130), hits in a season (56) and season homeruns (9). 14 GENERALS BASEBALL CAP'N DICK SMITH FIELD Washington and Lee baseball plays all its home games on Cap'n Dick Smith Field, a state of the art facility named after the former W&L baseball coach. The field was constructed during the fall of 1998 at a cost of 1.8 million dollars. The facility features a 78’ by 28’ pitching and hitting building, two 62’ long dugouts, a concession stand, men’s and women’s public bathrooms, a 36’ electric scoreboard, two outdoor bullpens, and a state-of-the art sound system contained within the heated press box. The dimensions of the park are 330’ down the leftfield line, 400’ to centerfield, 320’ down the rightfield line, and 370’ to each of the power alleys. The fence stands 16’ high in rightfield and 8’ high around center and left field. The first game was played on the field on April 19, 1999. In that contest, W&L defeated Lynchburg College, 9-3. The field was officially dedicated on May 22, 1999 in a ceremony which featured Sandy Alderson, former Executive Vice President of Major League Baseball. Since starting play in the new Smith Field, W&L has compiled a 99-46 (.683) home record. 15 Washington and lee washington KENNETH P. RUSCIO, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Ken Ruscio officially began his duties as the University's 26th president in July 2006. Ruscio earned a B.A. in politics from Washington and Lee in 1976 and earned an M.P.A. and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978 and 1983, respectively. Ruscio served as a professor of politics, associate dean of the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and dean of freshmen at W&L from 1987 until 2002, when he became the dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. Ruscio has also taught at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the University of Kansas and was a postdoctoral research scholar at UCLA. He recently completed his second term as national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun at W&L in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led and served on dozens of academic, professional and civic committees. Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a son, Matt, age 18. JAN HATHORN, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR The 2008-09 school year will be the second for Jan Hathorn as Washington and Lee's Director of Athletics. She is just the seventh director in the University's history. Hathorn served as the University's women's lacrosse coach for 19 seasons and as the women's soccer coach for 14 seasons. She had also been an assistant athletic director and the University's Director of Physical Education from 2002-07. Hathorn arrived at W&L in the fall of 1987 and was chaarged with beginning the school's women's soccer and lacrosse programs. She guided the soccer team to a 129-88-9 (.591) record from 1987-2000 and was named the ODAC Coach of the Year twice. In lacrosse, Hathorn turned W&L into one of the nation's elite programs, guiding the Generals to a 222-93 (.705) record from 1989-07. Her teams produced 17 winning seasons, nine ODAC titles and eight NCAA Tournament berths, and she was named the ODAC Coach of the Year nine times, including in each of her final five years. Hathorn's 277 career wins (277-112) rank among the most in the history of collegiate women's lacrosse. Before arriving at W&L, Hathorn spent five years at Denison University, where she coached the lacrosse team to a 55-19 overall record and five conference titles. Her 1985, 1986, and 1987 teams finished eighth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament and she was named the NCAC Coach of the Year in 1987. Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1982 and a M.A. in physical education from Ohio State University in 1985. Hathorn makes her home in Lexington, where she is active in the community. 16 GENERALS BASEBALL ABOUT W&L WASHINGTON and LEE UNIVERSITY — a small, private, liberal arts college, is the ninth oldest institution of higher education in America. Founded in 1749, W&L prides itself on the characteristics that have earned its reputation as a place unique and apart in the national educational scene. The school’s name comes from two of America’s great leaders who saved W&L in times of need. George Washington saved then Liberty Hall Academy from financial ruin in 1796 when he gave the school its first major endowment gift—$20,000 worth of James River Canal stock. The donation—at the time the largest to any educational institution—continues today as part of the endowment. Robert E. Lee saved then Washington College from obscurity after the Civil War by serving as its innovative president from 1865 until his death in 1870, and instituting such programs as the School of Law, the nation’s first school of journalism, and the revered Honor System that continues to play a major role in W&L life. More than 95 percent of W&L’s full-time faculty members hold doctorate or other terminal degrees, and all of them are, first and foremost, teachers. And with an average class size of just 16, W&L students clearly benefit from that expertise. W&L features a highly-ranked School of Law that has been an integral part of the school since 1866. Approximately 120 students receive Juris Doctor degrees each year and five receive Master of Laws. With a student body that represents nearly all 50 states and attracts citizens from 50 other countries, W&L is truly an international institution set in an idyllic college town. USA Today described it this way: “If you close your eyes and conjure up the ideal campus—red brick buildings with rows of white columns, a placid commons beneath the arching branches of ivy-covered trees, a small town of 19th-century storefronts—you’ve got Washington and Lee.” Washington and Lee University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran's status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment. Undergraduate student inquiries about this policy should be directed to the Dean of Students Affairs, Elrod University Commons, (540) 458-8751, law student inquiries to the Associate Dean for Student Services, (540) 458-8533, and employment inquiries to the Director of Human Resources, Howard House, (540) 458-8920, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia 24450-2116.
