VC/UHV Library Annual Report FY2013

VC/UHV Library
Annual Report FY2013
Library Lab
Months of planning and
construction during FY2013
culminated in the opening of the
Library’s first hands-on instruction
lab for Fall 2013.
Located on the first floor of the
library, the instruction lab (Room
106) has 24 computers for student
only use with a wall-sized
projection. The room is also
multi-purpose, as the computers
can be quickly hidden away into
the desks to convert the room from lab to classroom.
Also in Room 106 is a table for laptop users, a collaboration station, and a large whiteboard for more
collaboration. Markers can be checked out from the 1st floor service desk.
When not in use for instruction, Room 106 is open for any student to use for general computing needs. All
computers have access to Microsoft Office 2010. Victoria College students are now able to reach their student
drives with the addition of an app that connects them to Victoria College drive space.
To book the lab for instruction or classroom use, please contact Amanda Breu ([email protected]).
Regional
Collaboration Station
Room 106 is home to our collaboration station. Students working on a group project can plug in up to
six laptop computers. Special hardware allows the
view on an individual laptop to be shared with all
users on the large screen monitor. Each user can
work separately & show their info when needed—the
view can be shifted to any of the laptops connected.
History
Website
Re-design
The Victoria
Regional History Center’s
website received a sharp
new look this
year. Web Services Librarian, Berika Williams, and Special Collections Librarian, Sheron Barnes worked with
current users, a heuristic study, and much more analysis
to develop the new clean, user-friendly site. Use of the
VRHC website is up 50%!
Visit the VRHC website at vrhc.uhv.edu.

Retirements
This year we sent two long-time staff members off to welldeserved retirements.
Darla Marthiljohni was acquisitions coordinator (the book
buyer) for 25 years.
Shirley Parkan was interlibrary loan coordinator for 28 years.
Darla Marthiljohni
Shirley Parkan
We will miss them both—for their wonderful selves and their
huge knowledge of the library and how it runs.
Milestone Anniversaries
Four of our librarians celebrated milestone anniversaries this year.
Lori Williamson, Access Services Librarian,
celebrated 20 years. Sheron Barnes, Special
Collections Librarian, and Joe Dahlstrom, Library Director have been with us for 25 years
each. Karen Locher, Associate Director, has
been with the Library for 30 years.
Together, these librarians represent 100 years of
combined service and knowledge. Wow!
Computer Upgrades
Along with the 24 new computers in our instruction
lab, all of our first floor computers were upgraded
this year.
Students are delighted
with the “All-in-One”
silhouette. The
processor and the large
monitor are together,
making them more
streamlined. They take
up less space, and look a
little futuristic too!
Behind the scenes, we
upgraded our printers —
a new color laser printer
as well as black and
white. The new printers are faster and support
duplex printing.
Community of Readers
In its third year, UHV selected The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins as its Community of Readers selection.
The Community of Readers program selects a book for
all first year students at UHV to read each year.
In addition to a faculty lecture series centered around
the themes and plot points of The Hunger Games, this
book was used to bring awareness of censorship by incorporating it into the Library’s Banned Books Week
activities by screening the film, having a discussion
about archery in the book and
movie, having an atlatl
demonstration.
The Hunger Games was one
of the top ten banned/
challenged books in 2011.
Librarians Amanda Breu and
Lori Williamson serve on the
UHV Community of Readers
Committee. Amanda is currently serving as committee
chair.

Banned Books Week
Banned Books Week 2012 was an exciting week at the VC/UHV Library.
Our speaker for this year’s Read Out was teen author Rosemary Clement-Moore, who is
originally from Victoria. We expanded our 4th annual Banned Books Week activities to
include movies screenings, faculty presentations, an atlatl throwing demonstration, and
an essay contest for students.
The VC/UHV Library partnered with the Victoria Public Library to screen five films
based on banned or challenged books and themes of censorship. Some of the films
screened included Fahrenheit 451, Storm Center, The Hunger Games and 1984.

Additionally, Diana Lopez, a UHV faculty member, discussed her book Choke and
Arizona’s law that bans Mexican-American curriculum in schools. Dr. Jeff Sartain, UHV faculty, presented on
censorship in modern literature.
We were able to work with the Museum of the Coastal Bend to have the Atlatl Club do a demonstration in the
lawn in front of the Library. This demonstration gave students, faculty and staff an opportunity to throw a spear
using an atlatl.
